After never seeing The Wire but after hearing nothing but praise for it, I was happy to read in the Radio Times this morning that FX are repeating the complete series from the 23rd Feb.
Thought that might come in handy for a few of you.
I'm very much looking forward to watching it.
You can pick each series up for £9.99:

I'm approaching the end of series 1 now & have to echo everything that's been said about the show - it's sublime; challenging, fantastically written & acted, complex & assumes that the audience are intelligent enough to keep up. Brilliant stuff.
Cheers for that, have never seen it but have heard only good things. Wonder if it will be on FX HD?

Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out. I've only heard good things about this series and have been wanting to check it out for a while. If it is as good as it is said to be then I might go the DVD route. Ta.

Just go the dvd route now, The Wire is everything people say & more. I watched the last run on FX & by around mid S1 started to buy the boxsets. After it finished on FX i just started straight from the beginning again. Probably enjoyed it more second time around.
There's an excellent blog about it at: http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/

Yeah but if I buy the boxsets they will just sit on my shelf unwatched for over a year:lol:
This way I will Sky+ then need to watch & delete to make space on the hard drive.

Thanks for this. I've got the first season on DVD but didn't really think very much of it. I'd like to give the second season a go, so will watch.

Season two is the worst one IMO, but seasons three and four are amazing, so don't give up on it (though if you haven't enjoyed S1, which is up there with seasons 3 and 4, it may just not be your cup of tea).

I should rephrase, I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy season 1, it just never grabbed me. I found it far too slow up until around episode 8 when it finally started to become interesting. I was having real trouble understanding what character's were saying and many plot issues so had to watch with subtitles on.

S2 was my favourite :D The Sobotkas. Fantastically drawn characters. Its so different to S1 though so i can see why people didnt like it.

Season 2 was my favourite until i saw season 4. I really loved the Dockyard setting and missed it when watching season 3 which is my least favourite season.
Had trouble understanding the characters as well, so watched it all the way with subtitles on even when i got use to.
S2 was good but took a time for me to get into... and that kid needed to be castrated... he was annoying :)
Generation Kill starts tomorrow night on FX... looking forward to that :D
Will have to look out for this as I've heard so much about it
Cheers for heads up

Thanks for the heads up. Do you know what time it's on ? I was just having a look at the FX schedule (http://www.fxuk.com/schedule/), at the moment it doesn't seem to be listed for 23rd Feb.
Heard lots about it and looking forward to watch it. Like others I should get the DVD boxsets but I know that makes it even less likely I'll get around to watching it (no I'm not looking at you Heroes S1 and 24 S4 ).
I hope somebody remembers to bump this thread nearer the air date.

I caught Season 1 on VOD, absolutely loved it and then bought the next 2 from Amazon. Finished Season 2 over the weekend, just superb stuff. I love the way it builds and builds and rewards you for watching from the start. Also, I found that reading the Wikipedia entry for each episode helps to fill any holes; there's so much going on at times it's easy to miss subtle things they do here and there (especially if you're not down wid da hood).
Cannot wait to start Season 3 tonight as I hear it goes back to the Season 1 storyline.
Also loved Season 2. I actually thought that Season 1 was the weakest of the first three. S3 was just brilliant TV from start to finish. Haven't seen past that yet, still waiting for BangCD to send me out S4.

I think S1 & S2 are on the whole the "weakest", which is to say, IMO, they're just not as brilliant as S3-5. I think Simon & Burns had really become confident by S3, and HBO had stopped making suggestions/requirements (not that there are many in 1 & 2). Probably I think more importantly by S3 they'd really worked out the scope and full arc of what they were trying to do.
S5 is underrated I think, as most people seem to say they think S4 is better, but i'd put them on the same level.
If you don't think you'll like this and wonder whether it's going to be worth 50+ hours of time, I can recommend David Simon's book "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" - if you like that, then you'll love The Wire and those 50+ hours will be the best time you've ever spent on a TV show.
I envy anyone who hasn't watched this series who loves really good telly - you're in for some great stuff. I'm going to watch them all again.
Also worth a watch is Brooker's 'Tapping the Wire' which is up on Youtube and as far as I can remember doesn't actually spoil anything, gawd bless 'im! Again, worth a quick half hour if you don't know whether you can commit to watching the lot or not.

I finished season 2 over the weekend as well - brilliant stuff, beautifully paced. I'm taking a break now to watch The Shield final season, but my Wire box sets are calling out to me...

Not for me, I don't pay the extra for FX!
Don't see either the Wire or Target on the FX Schedule? Family Man is on Mon 23rd in that time slot. And the Radio Times link is frakked.

It looks like the episodes are being shown once weeky, I was hoping for daily episodes. From watching season 1, I felt this is the kind of show that you need to watch in large blocks close together.
Season pass booked on Tivo.

My first time round was the last time FX did a full series run through, and that was one a week as well. Immediately after that finished I started from S1E1 again and watched maybe 3 or 4 a week.
I'd say both approaches have their strengths. The great thing about each ep of the wire is that it's more than enough as well as leaving you wanting more.

Looking forward to starting it.

Yes just the first, and really looking forward to the journey.
Could this replace Hill Street Blues as my all time favorite US cop show?
Have to wait and see I guess, but its got off to a good start.

Well episode 2 was just as good as one.
Its not often that people recommend or hype something to me that I should and it lives up to it.:notworthy
Top TV, and I hope they plan to show all 5 seasons of it.

I watched the first episode last week and it was quite good... but, although I got the gist of it, I had a hard time understanding what most of the characters were saying to each other. I will stick with it though.

If you liked the first episode, then prepare to be blown away, as I thought the first half of season 1 took a while to get going, but it's probably my favourite ever television show now, which shows just how good it gets.

I've finally got round to watching 4, this show really does get better with every passing season. Season 4 is some of the most heartbreaking television you'll ever watch.
