My favorite site on the internet http://jpgmag.com/ is closing, due to the pan global economic recession. Without much notice at all, either. The site goes on the 05/01/09 (tomorrow) and there will be no more magazines published.
To me JPG has been a cut above the likes of Flickr and other such animals, due to its pretty much polite unmoderated community - everyone is always polite, people just don't seem to upload porn and low quality fetish shots, the standard of work, due to the ethos of JPG, is generally very high and of course, it was a site, that, if you contributed to it, stood you and me average Joe the opportunity to have their work published and seen by thousands.

Check out the site before it goes. Join. Show an interest. Pop over to http://www.savejpg.com/ , set up by 15x100 and show your support. JPG's tag line is "Your World In Pictures", but it used to be "Brave New Photography", which I think is much more apt.

It will be a sad sad day if the site and magazine folds :(

Saw some mention of this on Flickr, I guess magazine publishers are going to be another of those areas of the economy that suffer badly in the coming year as people cut back on their expenditure.

Never looked at the site before, but it looks really good.
There's a couple of posts on there hinting that it might be saved though - have a look at the news blog.

Looks like it's been saved. Several interested buyers. Should have news on who's buying it next week.

We couldn't ask for a better community. In the week or so since our last email, the outpour of support has exceeded our wildest expectations. Your efforts, such as starting savejpg.com, writing blog posts, commenting on Twitter and Flickr, and generally making your voices heard, have provided exciting new opportunities for us.

We're thrilled to say that because of you, we have multiple credible buyers interested in giving JPG a home. We will be keeping the site up after all, and hope to have a final update in the next week or so on who the acquirer will be. Thank you for making all of this possible.

Yes, huzzah indeed. I'm glad JPG hasn't died a death - it has a little more dignity to it than Flickr. However, new acquirers means changes and that can oft be quite worrying. The proof of the pudding though, eh?
