View Full Version : Should I get back into video games? I feel so old!

I'll be turning 30 this year. I know, not that old relatively speaking, but given that I've not owned a games console in well over a decade I'm feeling my age. Especially when I read about online gaming and the size/complexity of the games available today.

Have things come a long way since the C64 then? ;)

OK altho I did own a C64, the original Nintendo was the one I used the most. Ahh Super Mario Bros 3! Remember that movie where the kid had the Nintendo Power Glove, thought that was so cool :dork:

So anyway, besides the occasional go on a mate's SNES and Playstation (1 that is) on games like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Tekken, etc...and that was ages ago, I've been away from gaming for a looong time.

Thinking about getting a PS3, like the sound of the games available, free online gaming and it's ability to play so many types of media (inc Bluray) will be useful. Just can't make up my mind whether to go for it. Damn little voice in my head telling me it's a silly waste of time, etc.

moving

30? I'm older then you and got back into games a lot later then you are now.

For games though get a 360. Miles better for them. If you really must have Blu-Ray and anticipate that will give you more use than a game will then get a PS3. My PS3 has had no more then 5 games in it since the day I bought it whereas I have/had over 100 Xbox360 titles.

personally I'd have a think about what you want from it. Jsut getting a ps3 because it has a bluray drive might be ok if you really want a bluray drive, but you should really compare the exclusive games for the 360 and ps3 to make sure they are what you would want to play. Generally the cross platform titles are better on the 360. You might want a Wii - play the old SNES and C64 games (via download) plus some not very complicated newer titles.

IMO free online gaming gives you 100% of the value you would expect for something being free. Its a bit poo on the Ps3 and very poo on the Wii.

Sounds like you're too old to me tho mate. Go get a Game & Watch and be done with it ;)

Noooo. leave the games alone, start watching Casualty and heartbeat now you are 30.

Or, well some games are hugley complex and not easy for people who don't play games. then you have something like oblivion where everything is nice and listed and you know where you are going for at all times, or most shooters now are pretty "you have one way to go and just things to shoot in your way". so you can get to the end of them quite easily and not get lost.

And casual gaming is a huge market - ie the Wii and the family style games.

god, if 30 year olds are giving up, there is no hope for the gaming world

I have both a 360 and a PS3, they are both good. But if you are after just one console I would probably recommend the 360 as others have.

30 too old? Most regular posters in here are older than that.

360s can be had so cheap and are great for both casual and hardcore gamng as there is such a massive range. It's not much of a gamble IMO as there's bound to be something you'll enjoy. :)

There's guys in their 40's who have a 360 and Live at work, so I wouldn't feel too old just yet

Buy a 360 and spunk £25 on a years Live membership and I'm sure you won't regret it.

I was thinking the same at one point G - although I have kept up with games to a degree, PS1, PS2 - last few years I trailed off console gaming, and fell out of habit.

I was toying with the idea of getting an xbox, wondering if I would actually play it - best decision I could have made, I love it. It now eats more of my time than I could possibly hope for (too much tbh), and the quality of gaming is just superb (never having a PC that was up to spec enough, the whole online gaming aspect is new to me, and rocking my world).

You won't regret it - and whichever you plump for, you'll never be short of people to play online with.

Another thirty something here that loves his Xbox360 and Xbox live.

In fact it never ceases to amaze me how my friends list suddenly shows 40+ people online around 11pm, as soon as their partners have gone to bed lol.

Fifa Football Leagues, Call Of Duty Clans etc are all full of 30+ geezers who were brought up on Zap 64 and similar publications and refuse to grow up.

Come and join us my friend or you may just end up watching DIY Programmes, Gok Wan, Ten Years Younger etc whilst rocking back and forth in your armchair drooling.

Too old? Don't be daft!

Why not go for it, but don't bother with PS3's - too expensive for what they are. The Xbox though is reasonably priced, has an awesome back catalogue, and just about anyone who is "really into games" you'll prob find has one. They also have that "blokish" sort of image for all that counts (At least it's not embarassing to have one  ).

Yes, if your experiences are of blocky old console graphics, the 360 or PS3 if you go for that option will blow you away.

Other than that, the choice of games - sky's the limit. What you looking for? Sure plenty on here could put together a "killer list" of games - most likely ones that have been out a while and can be got real cheaply - that you should look out for in the used section :D

I'm in my mid thirties and I only got my Xbox 360 last year. I regard myself as a casual gamer but really enjoy the games on the 360. I didn't really like any of the games on the Wii though, the novelty factor wore off very quickly.

I've only really got back into gaming in the last 12 months and loving it. I'm 42 and although I had a PS1 & PS2, I never really got into it. I now have a PS3 and an XBox 360 and at the moment I'm using the 360 exclusively. The new generation of gaming is awesome and now takes up far too much of my time.

PS3 is fine, there's a reasonable number of games for it now, it's a good gaming option. It's just that possibly more gamers prefer the Xbox. For all it's faults, it just "feels right". There's an incredible back catalogue, Live although it costs is way better than Sony's free version (But that's ok though). You'll probably find lots more people into gaming with a xbox, it's just the console of choice for most.

Xbox has a bad reputation for failure, but it has a 3 year swap guarantee from MS for the red ring problem, and the new falcon ones are way cooler and much more reliable anyway. PS3 on the other hand, there's now a laser failure issue which has started to come to light - horses for courses.

Whichever you go for, it'll be fine

mr_woo
01-01-2009, 20:44
I have and love my PS3 but if I had to go for an option I'd pick the 360 everytime. The biggest factor I find is the controller, it's just so much better than the PS3's for everything except beat em ups (the D-Pad is awful on the 360 controller)

Also with a 360 you'll find a lot more people from the forums to play with for online games etc plus it is just the much cheaper alternative too.

You're not too old at all.

I'm 42 this year and have back into gaming on this generation in a big way. I've always had an occasional copy of some PC titles on the go though.

Thinking back I should feel old as I remember playing pong in pubs and the introduction of space invaders, asteroids, etc.

The good thing about old git gaming is that your more likely to be in a position to indulge yourself.

I have a 360, PS3, WII (that's for my daugther honet guv - though it was preordered and she knew nothing about it), DS and a PSP. And my attach rate is very high on all of them.

The bad news is that I don't have either as much time as would like (or had in the past. Being married rather stops me from logging into WOW or Xboxlive as soon as return from work and not switch off until 3am.

I'd also echo the 360 recommendation. The PS3 was a present from my wife and although there are some great platform exclusive for it I wouldn't want it as my main console. As well as the controllers I find the store on the PS3 painful when compared to live.

camaj
02-01-2009, 00:44
The Wii seems perfect for the OP, same nintendo quality, hell they're even better at it that the NES days. It's also the perfect way to play the games you missed out on in the last 10+ years. IMHO there are better games on the virtual console than the 360 and PS3 combined and that's before you count Gamecube games or new Wii games.

Good point Al, he'll have about 40+ friends from day one!

99% of whom will never be online regularly enough to catch a game with and the other 1% will stop playing your new game just as you're getting into it.

Indeed. They are fun for 10 minutes if someone else has got one, but after owning one myself I couldn't wait to get shot of it. All the games are novelties at best and the ones coming out now are shockingly poor in general.

As a party console it is OK, as is if you like nothing better then flailing your arms around like a spaz, but for serious gaming then forget it.

Reefer
02-01-2009, 08:21
Agree with the Wii comments, haven't turned mine on for about 7 months, the novelty has well and truly worn off. Think I will keep it just in case a killer game appears (you never know!).

As for your age, I am nearly 41 and still get the buzz of anticipation from a decent game release. My missus says I am a bit odd still being into games but I remind her of her obsession with gardening and she soon shuts her gob!

If its new-tech, shiny and is a gadget, put me first in line - age is just a number!

37 year old here. Also played in the C64 days quite a bit. Been into playing ever since and currently play on the PC, 360 and Wii (when a game manages to draw me away from the other 2).

I don't feel old or odd playing. It's just a fun pastime. And games have come a long way since I was watching the little ball bounce on the Karaoke title song of Ghostbusters on the C64. :)

As for friends, I am friends with some forum members. I'll admit I tend to play online more on the PC and rarely have a chance to even get on Live. But I do appreciate some of those people not kicking me out yet as it's sometimes fun to see what they are playing. Makes me want to buy more games.

Not sure why it tells you in fallout 3 that you have friends playing it as well, not like you can do anything with your friends on it :D but its nice to know that other mates are playing it in general.

A wii would only be good if you have kids and its a family machine for the lounge. I've not used mine for months now, will think about selling it soon. But as a party machine its good - depends what you think you will get out of gaming? and how much time to spend on games - maybe get a PSP or DS for train journeys if thats the bulk of your free time?

I only have a few XBL LIVE friends, a couple of those are 'real' friends with x-boxes, and one off the forums (who I have only played one game with). Most other mates don't play games, or just haven't got round to buying one.

Being late to the xbox, I'm always one step behind and tend to play older titles - so although I have COD4 for instance, I haven't played it yet. I have had a few random friend requests from people I have played things like Lost Planet, Pure or (ahem) Bomberman LIVE with - but tend to delete them as I don't really know them, so it seems pointless them popping up on my list all the time. With my mates, its easier to call them and coordinate a gaming session together.

I'd be happy to friend any forums peeps, but coordinating play time is slightly harder, as well as owned games. I'm still waiting for L4D to drop in price, as that seems to be game of the moment.

Definitely worth getting a Wii (if only to have something to play when your 360 is being fixed by Microsoft ;)). I can understand why people playing several hours every night favour the 360, but IMO you can't beat the Wii for casual gameplay. It also has games that you can totally immerse yourself in (Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki etc). As camaj mentioned, there are also classic games available via the Virtual Console, and a few gems amongst the WiiWare titles (LostWinds and World of Goo are both great).

Having said that, I seem to be in the minority here, as I can't see the appeal of first person shooters. I'm also a bigger fan of Nintendo than Sony or Microsoft, and have found more games I loved on the Gamecube than on the PS2 and X-Box combined, so I'm obviously a bit biased. I still can't believe it took so long for someone to mention the Wii based on your gaming history though.

Gears Of War 2, Fallout 3 & PES 2009 come with the bundle. Will definitely be picking up Call Of Duty as that has been highly recommended as has Left 4 Dead as I do like a bit of zombie action.

How are the Resident Evil titles looking these days? I see 5 will be out soon. I'll need to start reading some reviews I think.

If you like Zombies, have a go at Dead Rising - its cheap now, as its old, but be warned, not everyone gets on with it, its a bit of a love/hate game. I, however, loved every minute of it and it remains one of the best games of any genre I've ever played. It does take a good while before it clicks, but once/if it does, you'll be hooked.

Just don't do what I've done, buy a shedload of games, play a few over n over (damn you live!) and be left with a big pile of unplayed games sitting on a shelf that get joined by all the latest games had at bargain prices!

Dead Rising is a zombie fan's near perfect game, but give it some time, its rock hard at first and there's far too much to do what with the storyline and case studies (all timed) so first just have fun exploring, build up your level and smirk as you stick a shower hose into a zombie's head then take its picture as blood gushes from it :)

Survive for 72 hours, then go through the game following the story, you can save and quit at anyime and your current level is saved for the next time you start playing

well done :)

i'd avoid dead rising as a starting game, its game mechanics are very contrary to normal game convention. something like condemned is good fun and cheap now and fairly spooky.

A bit late in replying to the original post, but I'm just a couple of months away from being 50 and still loving my xbox 360. It's also great for (drunken) evenings when our grown up kids come to stay. Guitar Hero is a particular favourite at the moment, along with FIFA 09 mini leagues and GoW2 split screen sessions.

Not so good on competing in XBox live though. Pretty crap actually, but don't know whether that is because I'm an old fart and the kids are just so much quicker, or because I'm just poor at games.

Yeah, drop us a freind request if you like G. I'm still going through the back catalog myself, having not played many recent games (yet still not being able to resist picking a few up in the sales :suspect:), so it's likely we will be starting a few games around the same time: I have COD4 for instance, and not started it yet, and Left 4 Dead I have been waiting for a price drop.

As for Dead Rising, technically it's brilliance and I do love it. However, it's flawed by a dumbass save system (one save only, located at specific locations), which is also countered by the timed missions you have to complete. So getting to said save point in time, while surviving can be mighty difficult. It's my only gripe with an otherwise great game, and apparently you can save an extra one to a memory stick, instead of your HD (good tip there). Hard as nails game though, and there are just swarms and swarms of zombies to hack, slash, batter, squish, run over and shoot your way through in a variety of hilarious and bloody ways.

It's the save point shennanigans which put me right off the game. I actually bought it, sold it, then bought and sold it again months later as I really wanted to like it, but that major flaw alone took the sheen right off an otherwise solid game. For me it was just too cumbersome and frustrating.

I would suggest getting a free trial for something like LOVEFiLM Rental (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=17) might be an easy way to cover all the older games, and you can decide which ones you might want to have permanently. And while I'm biased in favour of Rock Band, you really should pick up Guitar Hero 3, it's on offer at the mo in the sales, and is a great introduction to the genre.

But you're never too old to enjoy games, never. :D

Cool thread - didn't realise I seem average age around these parts!

Answer to the question - YES, get back into games (but good grief they seem to suck time these days!)

My question for this audience - who else feels their console (360 here) has pretty much killed PC gaming for them?

I'm not saying it's a bad thing.. but sometimes I feel guilty for neglecting the PC when it's given me SO many post Speccy years of quality gaming all the way from CGA Sopwith through Wing Commander onto Doom then Half Life and finally the MMORPG - and even those aren't getting a look in these days!

Pc gaming died when the n64 came out for me.
Comfy gaming not tied to a small screen/desk won me away.

Ratfink

Yeah, I was never a huge PC gamer, due to being one step behind spec wise. Last time I got a new desktop PC, I was thrilled to play HL1, and then Wolfenstein all the way through (bring on the next gen console version), but mainly stuck to strategy war games like the C&C games - which took up most of my time. By the time I played HL2, I didn't quite have the specs, so gave up about a third of the way through. I was playing consoles too much by this time anyway.

Actually managed to complete HL2 for the first time on the 360 the other day. There's too much good stuff on the consoles now, and I like the sit back and relax aspect, like others.

Re PC gaming.

No it didn't die for me. There's still a load of games I wouldn't dream of playing on a console.

FPS and RTS are just so much better suited to a keyboard and mouse combo that I don't think about it. That said it can get expensive as they've been a couple of games I've ended up playing on multiple platforms (BioShock and Fallout 3) but both times it was originally bought to play on the 360 but ended up playing on PC. That said I'm also playing WOW so I spend a lot of my gaming time with no choice but to play on a pc.

I also have the access issue. Our main TV is exacly that. Gaming would therefore be limited to after the wife has gone to bed if I did that and so my 360 is next to my PC and displayed ona monitor whereas the WII and PS3 are downstairs.

I'd pretty much given up on PC gaming before the 360 came out but its probably prevented me from getting back into it. There was no way of reliably telling if a game would be playable on your pc until just before it came out, or in some cases not until it was installed. Plus various companies muddied the water further when they started using DRM systems that wanted to tamper with windows when the machine was primarily for work.

I miss things like user generated content but the number of games where I actually used it were minimal compared to the convenience of knowing that games just work assuming the 360 does.

I step in and out, it all gets kinda samey and I get bored after a while, currently I’m gaming after about 4 years of not bothering.

The Wii drew me back in last year as I really loved the interaction and it offered something new and interesting, sadly it’s panned out to be a lot of dirge party games, but there are still some great titles there and I hope Nintendo do some 1st party magic this year as it was seriously lacking last year.

I picked up a PS3 as a media player and a 360 as a games machine, but I rarely use the 360 (it’s actually my wifes, who plays viva piñata and bejewelled 2 and not a lot else) I’ve not really found much on their that interests me, the only 2 games I use the 360 for are Outrun 2 (original x-box version) and Banjo Kazooie, but I prefer computer games with blue skies and plinky plonky music rather than endless homo-erotic war sims, I’ve borrowed a few games from colleagues but I’ve not really connected with anything yet, although I’ve yet to play crackdown and that sounds really interesting. I rarely have time for endless online sessions, but if I did I’m sure the 360 would get more use, plus I only have a silver account.

I’ve used the PS3 a lot and it’s become my console of choice, the system exclusives like LBP, Motorstorm 2 and Wipeout HD are brilliant, I set out just to use it as a media centre (which it does amazingly) as I have never been too keen on Sony I didn’t expect to really like it but it’s really impressed me. It’s library of games really appeal to me, but it’s horses for courses. A lot of my colleagues have also bough PS3’s so we can arrange to play on-line some evenings (it’s free, but patchy) . It’s not doing too well sales-wise which I have always found to generate the best games as companies at the back try harder, The Dreamcast was my favourite previous gen console and the Saturn before that, maybe I just like to back the underdog.

I miss PC gaming, but since changing to a Mac I haven’t really had the option, plus the endless tweaking and upgrades drove me a bit mental.

I suspect the cycle will continue as per normal and boredom will set in again, unless things evolve and new ideas and IP’s push through.

PC gaming?
Never really liked it. Firstly to me it seemed every programmer writing a game for a pc, would have a wet dream at the fact there was a keyboard, and write in infinate key combinations making a game a drudgery with a learning curve like the himalayas.
They'd be inevitably buggy, and often the biggest thrill of the game would be the fact the damn thing ran without freezing for 15 mins in the first place

Mostly though, well I think gaming should be about being slouched on the sofa with friends, not stuck peering at a small screen in a box room. Totally personal opinion of course, it's just not appealed to me.

I'm 36 and still gaming. Started with a old bat and ball type console back in about 1977. Moved on to a Dragon 32, ZX Spectrum then a Megadrive. A PS1 was followed by a PS2 (pre-ordered that online whilst in Sydney on my honeymoon) then a Xbox and finally a Xbox 360 and Wii. Not to mention various handhelds over the years.

Still get as much enjoyment now as I did then. Playing games online (such as FIFA) add more interest and games like Guitar Hero are great.

Eldest child is now 5 and is following in my example. She loves playing Mario Kart against me and got a DS for Christmas. Can't wait until the kids are bigger and get better at video games, will keep me on my toes and I can still see myself playing regularly in my 50s and probably older!
