Seeing as MrMoby is being mean, I think we need some banus balance brought to the table.

So feel free to list your worst games in 2008 and the ones you are dreading in 2009). They can be anything you like, including expansion packs, which makes this thread better then the top 50 one.

The answers won't be compiled into a list, mainly because I can't be arsed. Although if someone wants to do it then feel free.

1. The Force Unleashed - another crap movie tie-in that promised loads but delivered little
2. Alone In The Dark - crapper then crap
3. Condemned 2 - absolute tosh compared to the first one
4. Fallout 3 - I just didn't get the boredom aspect, but in fairness I didn't get Oblivion either
5. Little Big Planet - it should have been called Big ******* Letdown.
6. Devil May Cry 4 - looked great on trailers and seemed to be OK at first, but then got very tedious
7. Far Cry 2 - drive around for ages, shoot something, then drive around for even more ages
8. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith - should have been DLC and not a full game
9. GTAIV - massively overhyped, although not a truly bad game in the sense
10. Rock Band DLC - you must have more money then sense to pay these prices for a poxy song which should have been on the game or the sequel to begin with. I could have bought a house with the money some people have spunked on them.

I'll come back with what I am not looking forward to most in 2009, but Rock Band DLC will feature quite highly.

LBP - was so looking forward to it. Only to get an over hyped kiddy piece of ****. Luckily i was able to sell it to someone here :D

Mercs 2 - just didnt get it. It had all my fave ingredients. Sandbox play, loads of death and destruction but i just couldnt be arsed to play more than a few hrs.

Soldier Of Fortune 3 - every review blasted it, SOF fanboys hated it and yet i bought it like a **** and guess what. Its was dire. PS1 graphics, christy brown controls, crap story, crap everything.

How can you be "dreading" a game coming out in 2009?

I guess the tongue in cheek homage references are off your radar.

Although rather then those peeps that drive 50 miles at midnight to get a game on release we can have people who deliberately book a holiday on those dates to avoid such things.

I would definitely go for the whole Guitar Hero/Rock Band saga. If I actually bought each instrument for every game, as some mentalists do on here, I've worked out that I would have paid about £3000 for every minutes worth of enjoyment they brought me.

Force Unleashed - For similar reasons mentioned by Splobber
Mirror's Edge - Seen one level, seen 'em all.
Condemned 2 - some nice ideas, but like Mirror's edge I grew tired of it half way through.
Ninja Gaiden 2 - somehow worse than Devil May Cry 4. Crazy speed, not helped by Irritating camera.

The Force Unleashed: Biggest gaming letdown of the year by a LONG way.

Alone In The Dark: It should have stayed alone in the developers office.

Burnout Paradise: I've loved every Burnout game until this one. Far too many little niggles with it for it to be enjoyable for me.

31-12-2008, 09:52
alone in the dark, crappy driving sections, crappy running around central park. But i liked the chapter select design (so i did get to the end) and the fire effects.

condemned 2 - it went all a bit mad at the end (then again so did 1), but the achievements sucked - all mulitplayer and that was just an afterthought in the game

forgot

Viva Pinata 2 - 1.5 more like, didn't add anything really and those challenges, did they ever end?????

Banjo Kazooie - Just don't get it.... Dont get what I am meant to do ? build things ? whatever!!

The Force Unleashed by a mile for me (that's the one that hurts the most), gutted at how bad it was. No wonder the studio got disbanded before it was even released. GTA4 is a close, close second and yes I took the day off to play it and went to a midnight opening to buy a copy with the other idiots. :(

2009, assuming it gets released, Star Wars The Old Republic. If it's really good that's another life sapping mmo after I've freed myself from the clutches of WoW. If it's bad, they've marred one of my favorite ever franchises (KOTOR not Star Wars, that was marred many a year ago).

I would say Mas Effect but that came out in 2007, far too manay loading screens for me.

GTA4 was my biggest disappointment. It wasn't a bad game I just didn't like the more serious approach it took. I would have preferred more sandbox fun of San Andreas, which I ended up getting from Saints Row 2.

Pro Evo 2009 (Console & PC)
I think the decline in the series is one of the most disappointing events ever in gaming for me. Those of us who hoped and hoped that each year was just a one-off abhoration have come to the conclusion that all hope is lost. Seabass really is a ****.

Samba Di Amigo (Wii)
A crushing disappointment. I was so looking forward to showing the kids the delights of shaking my maracas to Tub Thumping or Take On Me but; (a) where were the maracas, and (b) where was the playable game? Uncontrollable and not worth the disc it was printed on. :(

Red Alert 3 (PC)
Although still a good game (it was in my top 10 :D ) - it just did not live up tp my high expectations. In fact, it is worse than C&C3 by quite a bit. Mechanics are all wrong and the tech tree is limited. The new Japanese faction not as awesome as the videos suggested.

Mirrors Edge (360)
How dull. All style and little substance.

Most hated for 2009
GTA Chinatown Wars (NDS) - yawn.
Pro Evo 2010 - no, no, no, no, no.
Halo Wars - RTS on any console is wrong.

31-12-2008, 10:21
Guitar Hero: World Tour (360) - nice try fellas, and hey! it's got overpriced DLC too! ;)
LittleBigPlanet (PS3) - Promised a lot, delivered **** all.
Home 'Beta' (PS3) - what a ****** up piece of software.
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (360) - I sense a pattern here.
Braid (360) - boring, opinionated, and pompous, and that was just the software developer!

It actually never made it on my list because this is the first year I think I have never bought it. It's true though that not playing a league with you guys, is perhaps the most disappointing gaming moment of the year for me.

Force Unleashed - Played the demo and hated it. Somehow, I still managed to buy it though.

Banjo Kazooie N&B - I've always liked Rare's games, even Grabbed by the Ghoulies. I'm not sure this should really be in my list as I've hardly played it yet because my son always seems to have the disc in his 360.

Viva Pinata: TIP - I'm pretty certain this could have been DLC.

Burnout Paradise - I've loved all of the Burnouts, and even though this looks fantastic, it's just 'meh'. Burnout is slowly turning into NFS, and that's not good. Bring back a proper crash mode.

Rockband - Actually I like Rockband, but the microphone didn't work (and the replacement that EA supposedly sent me didn't turn up) and my wife keeps moaning about the drums in the living room.

Xbox NXE - It's pretty, but a mess to navigate through. Go to Game Content and the screen will be filled with Guitar Hero / Rockband / Lips content. It takes ages to bring up information too.

Live Arcade - There's been a lot of chaff this year, but hey Outrun is coming out in 09, and at least we got the original Banjo Kazooie to make up for N&B.

Home (PS3) - It's ****, and it's sad but I think that 'teh kid5' will love it. I get this horrible feeling I'm going to see a bunch of knobs standing around in the town centre soon 'dancing' like their avatars in Home...

Almost everything released on the Wii - the mind boggles at the dross released for the Wii. Is there any kind of quality control going on?

Yes, I posted that just to out the fanboys.

I don't have an allegiance to either franchise, but the reason I mentioned Rock Band is because there is just so much of it and seems an integral part of the developer's ethos. If nobody bought it then they wouldn't do it or at the very least, reduce the prices.

Not much love for LittleBigPlanet by the looks of it. :(

Not much here either. Played it for two days and then wondered if i was the only one who didnt "get it"

The controls i find to be ropey at best.

I do admit it is wonderfully made though and some of the little touches are genius, BUT that isnt enough to get longevity from me.

I'd rather have a game of New Super Mario Brothers than this.

Maybe i'm just not their target audience.

That was my beef with it, it's all pretty and kitsch but when you scratch below the surface there is a few hours of gaming at best.

I wonder if the majority of people who didn't like LBP weren't interested in the Create/community side of the game. For me the Story levels are good but it was the level creation side of the game where you could make your own levels, play other peoples' levels etc that gives LBP so much long term potential. Having said that my first proper level is still only just over half done. If I don't get it completed soon people in the LBP thread (assuming there are still some left) are going to start taking bets on what they will get to play first my LBP level or Duke Nukem Forever. ;)

 So it's no.7 in your top 10 Games of the year AND still manages to find a place in your turkeys?!?

Force Unleashed was disappointing especially the much hyped physics gametech which was so underused & poorly realised.

Most overhyped game for me is Left4Dead. I agree it's fun when playing with friends, but even then, there is so little content & every level is the same, the fun factor wears off very quickly.

I agree with most of Splobbers to be honest:

1 - The Force Unleashed. This definitley is number 1, I was soooo looking forward to this game and gutted to find out it was complete dog turd.

2 - Fallout 3 - **** me who buys this tedious ****?

3 - Spore - Yeah it was fun for 3 minutes - then just rubbish.

4 - Devil May Cry 4 - booooorrrriiiiinnnnngggg

5 - Dead Space - Really didnt get this one at all, I enjoyed the beginning event horizon style opening but the rest was a poor mans resident evil if you ask me.

might add some more when i have a bit of a think

Biggest turkeys:
1. GTA iv - I just don't get the hype that surrounds this series????
2. LBP - maybe would have enjoyed it more had it not been hyped into oblivion.......and had I been 9 years old!
3. Farcry 2 - nothing, but an irritating repetetive mess of a game.
4. PS3 Home - somebody shoot me now!
5. Guitar Hero/Rock band - I can't think of anything more dull, geeky and sad than standing around with an errant strum pretending to be a rock god!
6. Pro Evo 2009 - has this series progressed at all in the last 5 years?
7. Spore - forgot about this one, but my god it was as dull as dish water!
8. Mirrors Edge - if this is the future of gaming, then they can shove it up their arse.
9. WipeoutHD - loved it at 1st, but became so insanely difficult that it wasted the whole game for me. I've nothing against difficulty, but at least make it possible - like Jet Set Willy all over again!
10. Devil May Cry - really should have ended this series after the 1st.

Not looking forward to:
Killzone 2 - the Sony fanboys have been harping on about it for as long as I can remember, but with only a prerendered ECS video to back up their claims of amazing graphics and gameplay......much like the 1st Killzone game, which (of course) turned out to be total whore gash - the rare good bit of gameplay was spoiled by the potholed diseased fettid pussy stench of crapness!

TonyG
31-12-2008, 14:37
Oh yeah, forgot about Devil May Cry 4. Certainly looks pretty & intially it's fun but then when it forces you to replay earlier levels & bosses & the controls start to get overcomplicated with newly-earned moves, it collapses into a tedious, horrible gameplaying experience. :|

I see LittleBigPlanet got the Eurogamer Game-of-the-Year award. I can understand why people don't like it. The single-player experience is short & the controls are poor. Compare the jumping mechanic to the likes of N+ & it falls far short. It's as if they delibrately made the jumping bad to make the game harder. Anytime I lose a life it's almost definitely down to the inaccurate controls, nothing to do with timing or bad puzzle-solving.

Playing it with co-op is a much more fun experience, but there is so much random lag & other players who just knob around rather than play it properly, I gave that up quickly.

The level creation tools are superb, but it will require a superhuman level of dedication to come up with something good & then on top of that, you then have the nervous wait for the Moderators completely wiping your hard work just because your game may look/play like something copywrited. :|

Resistance 2 - one of the most painfully average games I've played this year. It's just so dull in every respect, stick to platformers Insomniac, it's what you're good at.

Alone In The Dark - I part admire this game for trying to be different and trying out new things but with dodgy controls, especially for the awful car sections, (on the 360 version at least) it's one incredibly disappointing game.

Devil May Cry 4 - I don't particularly hate this game but when they turned round and made you play the same sections as Dante then I just realised I couldn't be bothered with it anymore.

Soldier Of Fortune 3 - awful, awful, AWFUL game whored out by Activision to some fifth rate eastern european developer. Just give it back to the main creators please so we can get a decent sequel.

Probably more but my minds gone blank.

Spore's a definite contender. Several games all rolled into one, none of them worth the effort.

I'll also nominate the Strong Bad game, only tried Episode 1, but just didn't enjoy it at all, will stick to the cartoon.

mrwriter
31-12-2008, 17:42
I really enjoyed the Strong Bad game, although I am at least a couple of episodes behind their release schedule!

Only one real disappointment for me, as I don't tend to buy them unless I am pretty sure they will be my thing (hence I didn't buy The Force Unleashed, which I am sure was horrendous even without playing it  )

1. Little Big Planet - this really should be my thing as I love old school platformers. Thing is, this is a very poor example of an old school platformer. Yes it looks nice and had Stephen Fry and all that, but the game itself is rubbish. I don't like the inexplicably popular 'sackboy' character either. People can bang on about the level creation all they like, but you can't 'create' a new control system so whatever level you dream up will still be **** because of the terrible controls. Then you add in the moderation nightmares and the horrible interface for finding user created levels and you get one big **** off disappointment.

I was going to put GTA IV as my number 2 but I didn't think that was horrendous, and did play it to a finish. It just wasn't worthy of the hype.

If it was a game Home would make my list too, but it isn't. Still, a turkey Bernard Matthews would be proud of. I cannot for the life of me fathom where all that development time has gone - how many months/years for that?

EDIT: Just remembered another one. PDC Darts on the Wii - bought that thinking it would be brilliant with the Wii controller, but it actually turned out to be almost impossible to play as a result of it.

Bish
31-12-2008, 17:45
GTA IV - Maybe not that bad but I hate wasting time replaying long parts just to get the point were I die!!!!
Alone In The Dark - I probably should have given this game more time but I really hated it.

Nearly every Wii game I played - with the exception of Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy & Zelda there hasn't been a decent game for my white doorstop. As Hitler said to Nintendo "your console is totally crap"

Joffy
31-12-2008, 18:19
GTA IV; Fantastic detail but they forgot the gameplay.

Far Cry 2; again, all style, no substance.

Fallout 3; Not a bad game, just oblivion but set in a bleak landscape.

GTA IV - crap crap crap

Dead Space - uncontrollable and poor

Burnout Paradise - Huge disappointment. Look at map to work out where to go, crash, repeat ad infinitum.

Guitar Hero : World Tour - superb instruments, gash game.

Surely there can be only one, for one of the most overhyped turkeys possibly ever.....Spore.

Another overhyped pile of poo - Little Big Planet. Plain boring, pointless, and only on the worst of the three consoles ;) No really, come on this has "Should have been a pc game" written all over it, should have been made somewhat easier to "play" and targetted at early learning.
I do sorta feel for Sony mind, their "big hope" of a killer release, the sort that people buy a console for - and already it's appearing at bargain prices (Though it didn't take long for Halo 3 to either I guess)

For 2009 - any game which is a movie tie-in, because let's face it - they ALWAYS are crap.

You have a point, maybe if it was the first GTA ever, it would have been incredible, and let's be honest, it's really good, it's just - well, too much expectation, and perhaps too short/fun stripped out is what people say (Though I gave up on it)

GTA IV for me was fun for a while but i lost interest all too quickly.

Bully was another one that didn't grab me at all. I think i've been spoilt by Crackdown for brilliant and engaging sandbox games.

My biggest disappointment is Rock Band 2. I hate the repetition and the jetting around the world in tour mode. I much prefer the linear GH format so i can pick and choose at ease what i want to play - having said that GH:WT was a bit of a mare to navigate with it's garish presentation.

GTA4 is mentioned enough in the other thread, though. Its clearly a marmite thing, it'll be the turkey of the year over here, if there is a poll, and number 2 in the best games of the year over there, behind fallout 3. At a rough guess, like.

I hate to take the bait on this one, but there is actually a whole lot more previews, media and thoughts on Killzone 2 out there now, than just a pre-rendered video backing up how it looks and plays.

As for my turkey's, I'm not sure, I didn't really play many games in 2008 that were that much of a let down. I got bored of LittleBigPlanet quickly, and Infinite Undiscovery had a horrible battle system which marred a nice looking and sounding game.

Other than that, maybe PSN/XBLA impulse purchases that I regretted.

I think the problem with GTA4 is, once the shine wore off having a new GTA, it was the same sort of thing but crappier handling of the cars. Its not a complete turkey but with the GTA name it had a lot to live up to. More fun missions would of taken off people's list imo

Also for 2009
Killzone 2 - single player demo could change my mind
Ninja Blade: played the demo and its a QTE with bits of hack and slash combat. :brickwall

Killzone 2 - single player demo could change my mind
The good news is a demo does exist, but a US store (Gamestop) is providing an exclusive code to those that pre-order the game, that gives them access to d/load the demo on the 3rd February, I assume that'll be a week or so before everyone else?

I think the problem with GTA4 is, once the shine wore off having a new GTA, it was the same sort of thing but crappier handling of the cars.

The only way you can complain about the car handling is if you stuck with Roman's ****** taxi for the entirety of the game. There was a huge mix of cars and handling - and some were amazing to drive whereas others were like trying to control a bag of concrete on wheels; kind of like real life then... I can understand disappointment with GTA, but no-one can claim it's crap - the attention to detail is amazing, the story is a step up from most games and the whole game world is one of the most impressive things to appear in a sandbox game to date. It's great fun online too.

For me there were three huge disappointments - The Force Unleashed, Spore and Little Big Planet.

TFU - how could they go so wrong with something so easy to get right?! They were half way to putting together the best Star Wars game ever, and then released it unfinished. All it needed was more thought into the level design, a little bit more polish and a slightly more open world and it could have been the best thing since sliced bread.

LBP - I appreciate the quality, the ideals, Stephen Fry and the quirkyness of it all. But it's soooooo dull and so hard to control. The physics may be brilliant, but they get in the way. The creation aspects are cool too and it's impressive what they've managed to do with the PS3 controller, but it's still not really that easy to do something good unless you spend 24 hours a day perfecting your masterpiece.

Spore - been hyped and development for ages and should have been huge, but it was so monotonous. Each stage eventually just turned into repitition and given the potential, there was actually hardly anything to actually do. The first game I've actually fallen asleep while playing (and it wasn't that late and I wasn't even that tired!)

Whilst these are my biggest disappointments, I also thought that Mirrors Edge was a one-note wonder (but I was expecting that so it wasn't really disappointing, but more living up to my expectations) and I couldn't spend more than a few minutes playing without reaching for the sick bucket.

and? ;)

I like some of mirror's edge (see my comments in the game thread) but there is really bad bits that gets on my nerves. If I could be bothered I would move it to no. 10

Maybe he only played 10 games this year!

It has to be Mirror's Edge for me, bought it for £20 and not worth it. Hard to know what to do and I gave up when I couldn't figure it out on level 2.

I generally listen to general consensus on games and wait until they're cheap so fortunately avoided dross like Force Unleashed. Fallout 3 is awesome though

For me the biggest problem with the story is that they start it off as a man who regrets killing, doesn't want to do it in Liberty City etc and then he just basically does missions killing people with no mind of his own. It's like they tried to make Nico this fully dimensional character and then ****** it all in the wind when it came to the 'Three Leaf Clover' mission with him shouting and gladly killing cops and everyone in his path. All that character build up basically for nothing then as you just realise the story's a load of crap and Nico is just a psychopath. Now maybe that was Rockstars intent that he never changed afterall, but it just seemed to me that they did their best to try and make him very likeable and then near the end just couldn't be bothered.

Not that I disliked GTA4, I thought it was a very good game but things such as the story and having a city with very little to do in it really let it down. Especially compared to much more fun games such as Saints Row 2, which thankfully doesn't have you taking out your friends either to go drinking/playing darts.

Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros for me

Mario Kart - nothing new here really. The online play was rubbish. But possibly even more infuriating/unfair in race mode than previous games - it didn't make it more difficult, just really annoying. They went blue shell crazy. Got very little enjoyment out of this.

Brawl. Wouldn't have such an issue with this if it hadn't of been overhyped to within an inch of it's life. Online wasn't the george best on this either.

Force unleashed :gag: on the Wii closely followed by Brothers in Arms Double Time :gag::gag:......
(I'm guessing the 'double time' bit referred to the horrendous slowdown resulting in every game taking twice as long as it should have)

People who produce games of this quality should have their hands chopped off and re-inserted into the nearest available orofice

In fact, pretty much everything released for the wii this year was cack IMO with the exception of Call of Duty WAW and Mario Kart

I can't believe GTA IV is being mentioned so much, I've played them all since the first in 1997 and can't really fault it. I thought the new seriousness and more focussed design was a breath of fresh air after San Andreas (which I loved, but it's a bit bloated, overwhelming and has a lot of silly parts -jetpacks??).

LBP - got this for cheap just before Christmas, really regret it. Its utter poo.

Didnt like Farcry2, Guitar Hero Aerosmith (havent played world tour but am sure I would find it equally appalling), otherwise the key to not having to play too many turkeys this year was not buying many games.

Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath. Could have been a nice expansion, but EA "Quality Control" strikes again - virtually unuseable in multiplayer mode because of game sync issues. Like most of the rest of the games based on the SAGE engine in fairness, but this just takes the ****.

When will EA
1) Learn to do "testing", crazy concept...
2) Sort out multiplayer properly, every other RTS seems to manage

Another vote for GTA IV - I can't put my finger on it precisely because all the ingredients seem to be there. It just didn't grab me. I think it boiled down to lack of innovation: after playing the previous incarnations it was just variations on a theme during the early stages - technically impressive variations, no doubt, but just the same old, same old.

Also, another mention for Far Cry 2. I still have my copy of Far Cry and love to install it again whenever I get a new processor or graphics card: I always find myself getting dragged in and playing longer than I'd intended. Far Cry 2 on the other hand is a dog's breakfast of half-finished ideas and technical glitches. It ends up doing nothing properly.

Fallout 3. Nostalgia made me buy it. I'm sure it's a great game if you can be bothered to dig deep enough. I couldn't.

Little Big planet (again). It looked awesome, it sounded awesome and it could have been awesome if only they'd remembered to put the game into the nice engine. My 6 year old likes it though.

Magic-beans award goes to Rock Band: you paid HOW MUCH for a posh game of Simon?? Wafer-thin gameplay masked by the inclusion of popular music. Bonus points for ripping off the European markets too.

Think my two biggest disappointments were The Force Unleashed and Lips. Both were actually good games but I was foolishly expecting something special from both of them.

Guitar Hero Aerosmith is probably the worst game played this year but to be fair it does everything it sets out to do and apart from being awful value for money, it's far from terrible.

Just remembered: Jumper - very bad bugs, i got stuck behind some stairs and kept dying and respawnsing behind some stairs.

Can't say that some of the games listed above were turkeys - perhaps not lives up to expectation -give me GTA4 anytime compared to say chicken hunter DS
