I want to buy my son his first bike for his 4th birthday later this month. We have seen a cheapy (£68) in Decathlon that looks ok but do any of you have any recommendations as to where and what to buy? My impression was that he would be alright with a simplistic basic model to bang around with for a couple of years. How do TRU and dedicated bike shops compare?

No personal recemmendations, but you always get what you pay for with bikes (obviously diminishing returns apply at the higher end of the market!). However, make sure you get one that fits him, and not one to 'grow into' - nowt worse than seeing a kid on a bike that's way too big

I'd get a S/H one, there's 100s for sale in loot or the local paper, they don't wear out and can be picked up for peanuts, failing that toysrus usually have a half price deal on most of the time.
