Some people say yes - but in my experience - no.

I have a mate with a panasonic (don't know what model) - and it won't play any of the R4's i lent him - even ones which are supposed to be dual encoded.

Which is wierd.

SOME R4's work - others won't

My copy of Notting Hill, for example is dual encoded to R2 and also R4 - I picked up a copy of Dirty Dancing for Mrs Flibble on R4, that's dual encoded too - go to the page here (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/) it's a great resource to find out which titles should also work on an R2 machine :)

A high proportion of discs on sale in Aus are dual coded R2+4. But not all.

www.michaeldvd.com.au is usually totally accurate on disc coding, so check out your title there before buying. If michael says its coding includes 2 then you are OK.

Of course, if you bit the bullet and got your player chipped/modded whatever, then you wouldn't need to worry. And with Aussie prices as they are, you can save the cost of modification in only a few discs. And you can get the more obscure back catalogue and brand new releases from the USA, too. JFDI.

I've had problems with The Matrix R4 before now. It was listed on DVDcraves site as R2/R4 compliant but wouldn't load on my Sony, nor on my mates Sony either. :(
Spoke to Daniel about it who assured me it works on his M/R player set to R2 and that was that.
I did manage to sell it on via Ebay (at a small profit), but I was a little more cautious until I got my player modded.:)

I thought the Matrix is R4 only. In Aus it is released by Village Roadshow rather than Warner Bros for R2 in Europe. In the past all my Village Roadshow releases are R4 only. Need to set my player to all regions rather than just R2 to play them

Yeah, but at the point of purchasing, I didn't know about the michaeldvd site. I was simply going by the description on the DVDcrave.com web site, which incidentally still states that the matrix is region 2 and region 4 compliant.

So I guess the lesson to be learned is to check the michaeldvd site (or any other reputable site).

Also it's worth noting that DVDcrave.com wouldn't take The Matrix back stating that it works in their players when set to region 2.
