Cheers dude.

Off topic a bit but why is teh matrix dislike so much here?

They weren't the greatest ever films but they were good fun and easy to watch.

Overrated-ness. Fanboys to the Star-wars extreme, where Star-wars was a nice little film, The Matrix just was *****. Was genius putting that 'where is the spoon?' thing in it, fooled everyone into thinking it's somekind of bizarre and thoughtful movie, where in fact the Wachowskeeee Bros. had gleefully drawn the whole thing up on the back of a packet of B&H during a session at their local Starbucks. Genius.

Sorry, should have used spoiler space for the 'behind-the-scenes' Matrix twodiscer thingy shouldn't I, where all this is revealed. ;) :D

Okay, all that aside, for me it's just the fanboys. It's an okay film, but hyped into oblivion. I at least hope the next two actally live up to this hype and are worthwhile pieces of cinema.

I thought the Matrix was a thought provoking take on the nature of reality.

Philosophical wire fu with explosions is great in my book.

star wars is a much more overated film than the matrix, i prefer the the matrix to star wars anyday, seeing that the matrix is an adult sci fi film where star wars was a childrens sci fi film with aload of stupid alien characters

Like I said 'nice little film'. I expected people to be more peeved with that comment than the ones about the Matrix, I didn't care much for Star Wars, and only have seen the original film (part 4?). The problem with The Matrix is that it's a cheap turn-on film for 16-early 20s way-way-hetero Nova-driving males. Loads of style (actually can appreciate this to an extent), pretty good idea behind it, but zero substance. All IMHO of course. ;)

Upon first viewing, The Matrix blew me away. It was just so entertaining, and I got caught up in the hype. In the build up to Star Wars I was ready for anything vaguely cool, and the movie reminded me how awesome kung-fu and sci-fi could be if done well.

The second time, I noticed the cheesy lines and bad pacing. However, I still loved it because I knew that the end would kick ass. The SFX still rocked. The music was still good. The plot was still interesting. The third time (still in the cinema), I was living vicariously through friends who hadn't seen it yet. Their reaction to the coolness factor became mine, despite being bored silly by the first half of the movie.

Then I got it on DVD, and boy, did I watch it a lot. It would play in the background, be used for demos, be put on at parties, or I'd just sit down and watch a bit if I was bored. I played it to death, until I never wanted to see it again. Between then and now, I saw Iron Monkey, ITLOD4, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Legend of a Fighter, all of which reminded me that Woo Ping HAS done far better work.

Having watched it again recently, I can now spot its flaws easily. Sure, it's cheesy at times. It's confusing. It contains some wooden acting. It drags at the beginning. The stuff that first was impressive, is now just average. It's not as clever as we all first thought. However, it's still a hell of a lot of fun, and comparing it to other kung-fu movies listed above, it's a lot more watchable as a complete package. The fights may not be the best - nor the gun play - but as a merging of sci-fi, kung-fu and action, it's the best attempt I've seen, warts and all.

It might seem obvious, but if you've been subjected to hype a film's rarely going to live up to it...the only film I did think lived up to the hype was LOTR, even then hardly flawless, but a good ride none the less.

This was what spoiled the Matrix for me first time round...that and having seen the vastly under-rated Dark City a couple of months earlier. However, I find Matrix grows on me every time I watch...again, by no means flawless but it's fun and brought a whole new visual style to western cinema (successfully).(imho).

Dude.... what if there really is no spoon ? What if, we do all live in a matrix but just don't know it. For all you know The Matrix was programmed to give the Wachowskeeee Bros. the inspiration and means to make the film.

Why is it hated?

Overhype certainly has a lot to do with it, but...

Dark City, similar idea, handled far better and done first could have something to do with it, I think generally the people who dislike often seem to have seen Dark City first, I know I did.

Now on to the main problems...

1) The actual back story is just so contrived and makes no sense, it's obvious that the only reason it exists is to explain why the matrix exists but it just doesn't work. Keeping people alive in order to use their body heat to supply power, using the dead to feed them, it just doesn't work! It jarred completely with me.

2) Special effects, everyone raves about them but there are some really ropey CG shots and the big bullet time thing had been in adverts months before.

3) It's to slow to be a decent action film and the big action scene (the lobby shoot out) is one of the least exciting action scenes I've ever seen, it's just badly directed and doesn't work for me. People talk about it being a home cinema reference scene, but the audio is pretty poor as well.

A few points, I could go on. Bound was excellent though, shame the Wachowski's seem to be tied up making hundreds of prequels and sequels to the Matrix rather than concentrating on doing more decent films.

That's spoken like somebody who never watched a kids film in the cinema before star wars.

Star wars was the mother of all kids films, it was and is the 'second coming' before star wars all us as kids had to watch at the cinema were endless repeats of The Love Bug, Sinbad films, Disney pap like 'Escape to Witch Mountain, One of our Dinosaurs is Missing, The Fantastic Journey ( a mockumentary about a cat and dog who travel across the USA in order to be reunited with their owners- for gods sake). That's what Star wars was up against in those days. Ity's hard to appreciate nowadays with all the money spent on blockbusters and special effects today just how outstanding Star Wars was. It's like comparing the space shuttle with a kite.

Star Wars was made a quarter of a century ago, it's still talked about now I doubt the same will be the case for the Matrix, even if the sequals are a thousand times better than the original.
