Any info on this at all, anyone? Is it still available, is it good and do you think it'll ever get a DDVD release!?!? :) Please, I love this film and would love to see the even longer version! :D
You realise of course that Costner's preferred version, and thus the 'Director's Cut' is the "short" theatrical version?
If your German is up to it (or your Lakota!) you could always try "Der Mit Dem Wolf Tanzt" ....the German edition, this is the 240 minute director's cut. The film has a German or English soundtrack but has only German subtitles - this could cause you a few problems with the LAkota souix dialogue which is only subtitled in German.
If you are familiar enough with the film the problems of Lakota souix dialogue might not be too big a problem for you!
try e-bay a dts 2 disc r1 version was released for a short time by Image which has since been deleted.
Or spain for the very cheap dir cut and theatrical version 2 disc set or 3 discs in a box
not checked the subs info yet www.dvdgo.com

I thought it was the complete opposite. Costner wanted to release the full 4 hour version in theatres, but the studios forced him to trim it by one hour!

I have this version of the film and it was of the first DTS disc to come out. Due to compression technology being not as good as today the long 3 hour film and DTS soundtrack had to be split into 2 discs.
However it is not the 4 hour version just the 3 hour version split over 2 discs.

The reason that this version spans 2 disks is that the DTS soundtrack is full bitrate and the video bitrate is also high at 7-8 MBit/s.
This is through choice to present the film at its best rather than as a result of a shortcoming in technology.
The results are stunning.
