View Full Version : oooooooooo new dune!
Hey, Dune fans, remember all that controversy that surrounded the original DVD release last year of the Dune miniseries that ran on the sci-fi channel? Well, Artisan has just announced a new special edition to replace that lackluster first version, arriving on 6/18. This two-disc set features a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer of the 295-minute director's cut and both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks, and plenty of extras including two audio commentaries with with Frank Herbert, John Harrison and actor William Hurt, the "Science Fiction Round Table Discussion" and "Defining Messiah" documentaries with "prominent writers, directors, scientists and religious scholars of all faiths," and promo spots. Retail is $26.95.
just typical. I've just got the current version.

Wow! That sounds worthy of a purchase. Can't wait to listen to the audio commentaries.

this is one time that i wouldn't mind going for the R1 version because it was orignally film in NTSC (or please correct me if i'm wrong, might well be 35mm!?)
Hmmm, running time is the same as the current release, and the Frank Herbert commentary should be interesting... seeing as he died in 1986!

I recently picked up the TV version - 35 minutes extra... but later found out it was disowned by Lynch - I can see why - it's uter toss.. A completly differnet 'comic sytle intro' & crappy editing > for any Dune fans out there - wait for the double and AVOID the TV cut like the ruddy plague...

Eeek!
What controversy?
I never noticed... What was it?
I was quite happy with the original R1 version, what was wrong?

True but that doesn't matter. It would not be the first time that interviews and other soundbits from a dead person would have been used for a commentary. I'm more interested in hearing about Herbert's views on the Dune universe than on him commenting about what's happening on the screen in the mini-series anyway.

Its more likely to be Brian Herbert (Franks son) doing the commentary rather than a few edited soundbites by Frank Herbert surely.

Deaks: The running time for the first release is 266 minutes.
This new release is 295 minutes. The R2 UK version is 278 minutes long ( some say 273 ) in PAL.
This is the "original" cut. The one released in R1 was, I believe, a Sci-fi channel cut.

With all the excitement about the new DVD edition please let's not forget that the series was really really terrible.
Bad acting, bad SFX, bad casting and the script was an insult to anyone (like me) who absolutely loves the Dune books.
To make a REAL film or series based on Dune you'll have to have the kind of money Peter Jackson had to make TLotR.

Lot like the films, David Lynch makes some terrible films :D

Wrong David. David Cronenberg made Existenz, not David Lynch.
I recently watched the TV edit of the theatrical release of Dune and although it was 4:3 with a mono soundtrack it follows the book more closely than the previous WS release.
Some of the scenes that are omitted from the WS DVD just make the film plain confusing if you haven't read the book. For example there's no explanation how Alia ends up in front of the Baron and The Emporer at the end! At least the TV edit explains that she was the only fremen to be taken alive from a settlement. That's just one of many such instances.
Just my two penneth worth.. :)
wow this thread just keeps switching between the film and the series. Anyway IMHO the series is better although now after seeing some Lynch other films he is capable of making a good film. I don't know if this was his fault or an Alien 3 type of situation. I have to admit that any version of dune I see I'm going to like in some way or other and I do agree that it'd be nice to see the sort of money spent on it as there was on LOTR. If not I think some sort of anime might be interesting. For me the TV mini series was closer to the book...
Anyways any re-release of it I'll be buying as it's to do with Dune. I've still nopt listened to the unabridged audio cassette yet as it's 24 hours long
