Fellow Self-obsessed highly-paid salad-munchers,

Forget the programme - I've never seen it - but what interests me is the decision by Fox to price the two "Ally McBeal" box sets at £20 each so you can get all SIX discs for £40 on the high street or as little as £30 on-line.

The equivalent complete season box set from Amazon.fr is £65!

Can anyone shed any light as to this apparent generosity? What will this mean for other TV series sets? If Fox can sell a complete 20-odd episode TV series in six Amaray cases for £30, why should they pricel "The X-Files" at £70+ and how can Paramount get away with selling "Star Trek" for the same?

Yours Intrigued,
Lik.

Both the Xfiles and Star Trek appeal to a much more core audience nowadays. If you like either of them, you will pay for them. I don't feel the Xfiles is overprice btw, have never paid more than £60 for one of them.

Ally McBeal is mainly aimed at women and I don't see them walking into their local HMV and buying them on the spur of the moment. The pricing is more in line with Sex and the City sets.

All swings and roundabouts on the french thing though, look at Friends series 7.

As much as i love the programme (i think there should be a Cage & Fish spin-off) i was a little bemused when they originally released the series on VHS. I thought who is going to but them??, i had my doubts that they would sell but obviously they did as more seasons started to arrive on VHS.

Fox must realise that there is a market for these, maybe they're pricing them competitively to make sure they shift them and ensure those that do buy them will possibly purchase subsequent series on DVD.

If i wasn't compelled to get Buffy season 2 i'd probably go with an Ally McBeal set as they're always good for a laugh. Who knows we could get them even cheaper in a bargain bin somewhere.

The discs are able to be sold much cheaper as they are very thin, unnaturally thin even. As a result of this there is very little depth to them and you almost get the feeling that they could easily snap in half.

barebone and 4:3. so the price is equal to it's value. But still a good price, and something that will make these sets sell more than they would have.

Fellow Waifs,
So fans of these are mugs and will happily be ripped-off like robo-sheep?

Ally McBeal is mainly aimed at women ...The pricing is more in line with Sex and the City sets.
"Sex and the City" 12 x 25m, 2 discs £25 at Amazon UK

"Ally McBeal" Vol 1 12 x 50m, 3 discs £16 at Amazon UK

Twice the material for two thirds of the price.... I don't see the comparison. Again, for fans of any TV series, such a price seems ridiculously cheap.

Yours Thinly,
Lik.

Dear Thinly Lik.

Stop winging and buy the bloody sets then, ya don’t need our approval. And if you want X-files for cheaper, buy videos and tape off the telly.

Yours lovingly
Roberto

I think the price is based upon the fact that Fox can't count.

They do realise I guess, that they've missed 3 complete series!

R4 is starting at series 1.
