Just has a look at psxservices (http://www.psxservices.co.uk) who had them in stock:

And there is a note on the main page saying:

The R and DVD key sales have been suspended.

This is due to a possible compatibility issue with UK consoles. We are seeking advice from our supplier. Orders shipped out should not be installed.

So be careful if you order one, looks there are problems with UK consoles.

cheers adge mate - gonna hold off for a while then - just cant get comfy with the idea of applying the soldering iron myself, but at the same time am the sort who would rather do something like this by myself than pay some guy down the compfair/market twenty squids for twenty seconds wr0k - thats why the r-mod looked like such a good idea - patience i think :)

No problem mate, always a pleasure to help out.

I went for an SBOX mod (fitted by the nice people at PSXSERVICES) which I'm very pleased with. I thought with a USB mod it would be easy to swap in the future as technology moves on.

I imagine this is more likely something to do with the recent Channel Technologies/Sony case where the High Court held that region mods for Playstations were illegal, rather than any technological or compatibility problems.

No, it's a technology issue.

If you look at the site today you will see that there are 2 versions on the version 5 console (which is the only one the R-MOD will work with), you have to actually open your console up to determine which version of the console you have. If you open and check you have the correct model you can buy this chip, otherwise it won't work.

Have a look in there news section for more detail.

Any chance you could explain to me what that actually is?

Sure CA, it's a USB based mod chip, although it does require a wire to be soldered inside the PS2 (that's why I got psxservices to do that bit).

To use it you:

1) Boot from action replay or dvd region x or mega memory 16 boot disc.

2) Turn the key on (little switch on the front).

3) Insert your legal backup.

4) Play the game.

It won't boot DVDR's or Import Games (But if you backup import games to CDR it will, so I buy the import make my one legal copy and use that).

I went for it as I thought it was easy to remove if there were problems, easy to upgrade from this point on without the need to open my PS2 and fairly cheap. I’ve not had a single problem with it.

If you want any more info please let me know.

I see - cheers for that Adge :)

Couple of questions - does 1 game fit on 1 CDR?

Any problems saving to memory cards?

How long does it take to back up a game?

Cheers!

Yes, 1 CD Game fits on one CDR. If the game was on DVD there are methods of hacking out the music and intros then burn it to CD, but I've never done this, I've not got any imports on DVD.

No problems with Memory Cards, unless you count having the descriptions in Japanese!

I always burn at 2x as it's more reliable and I find DataSafe 32x White Label media to be by far the best, you can see slow load times on cheaper media. But in terms of timer a 600 Mb CD takes about 30 mins.
