View Full Version : What film do you think will win best film at this year's Oscars ?
What (and why) do you think will win best film at this year's 2002 Oscars, whether it's the film you think will win for any particular reason/s, or the film that should win, but probably won't for any particular reason/s ?
Lord of the Rings - If lifes fair it should have the best film gong nailed. Brilliant film. Great Direction, superb performances and a awesome score are just three reasons why it should win.

Yeah my money is on lord of the rings taking at least 8 oscars maybe 10.
Of the movies I have seen, it should be The Others although I hold my hand up and say I have not seen LOTR as I was reluctant to spend £10 odd going the cinema to see a film I know I will buy on DVD!

Mr Stanton thinks 'Beautiful Mind' will win best picture.
It's got all the makings of an Oscar winner... Disabled man fights to live American dream. How could that not win.
Rings and Moulin Rouge will clear up all the techy awards.
Can't see LOTR baging any of the big awards till the last films out.
I see Amelie causing a major upset this year.
I'd like Lord of the Rings to scoop it, but I think a Beautiful Mind will take it.

i'm with Thomas, i REALLY want LOTR to win, and i personally feel it's the most deserving film of the lot, and respect should go out to the people involved.. especially Jackson. I don't know many directors out there who've undertaken such a HUGE project, and (ok only one film has been released) actually complete it with dazzling reesults.
But i feel 'Beautiful Mind' may take it.. i've not seen it, and i'm sure i'd probably like it, but i must admit i'd be mighty peeved it LOTR loses.. if LOTR wins best or director i'll literally be jumping up and down.. i just want it to win everything. If it doesn't get Best Adapted Screenply then the voters most likely haven't read the book... or are being paid off. And Best Effects, surely guaranteed???
But looking at past winners, i don't think there's been a single fantasy/sci-fi film to win Best Oscar. Which is a shame, a i personally think when a film takes you to another world, then it's achieving one of the absolute greatest and miraculous things a film can possibly achieve!!! :)
I've not seen the wonders of LOTR yet so i'm going to go for Moulin Rouge, i'd really like to see this win as it's a fantastic film that i've watched more times than is healthy.

Moulin Rouge and A Beautiful Mind will split the honours (my bet's are on Moulin winning best director and best actress, and Beautiful taking best film and best actor), with Lord of the Rings getting mainly technical stuff and nothing else really featuring heavily.
Then again, I predicted Sixth Sense would win best screenplay...

Its obvious Moulin Rouge will pretty much win everything its nominated for.
It has a near perfect blend of independant feel & mainstream accessability.

And a couple of months ago I predicted Drew Barrymore for Best Actress... I think Nicole Kidman is likely for that honour, either for Moulin Rouge or The Others. Her biggest rival is Sissy Spacek for In the Bedroom, who is certain to be nominated but maybe won't win (although I certainly wouldn't object if she did...) as a) she's won before and b) Nicole has given two distinctive performances last year and that may sway the Academy in her favour.
Jim Broadbent has to be favourite for Supporting Actor, for the same reason, probably for Iris.
Shrek for Best Animated Feature.

In a perfect world I'd like to see The Lord of the Rings scoop everything. I've seen it a total of six times at the cinema now and have loved every second of it each time. Easily one of the best films ever IMHO.
Amelie and Moulin Rouge are both very deserving though.

Of the films mentioned so far I guess I'd like to see either Moulin Rouge or LOTR get the gong but would not be surprised if In The Bedroom got it - not that I've sen it yet, just from the buzz around it.
However, since there is no justice in this world, I am expecting the gong to go to the horribly inaccurate Beautiful Mind.
Best director - I want Lynch to get it but he won't!! So Baz Luhrman for MR.
Actress - Nicole for MR - the Others sucks!!
Actor - don't care (so long as it's not R.Crowe for Beautiful Mind) but I expect it will got to R.Crowe for Beautiful Mind.
In fact I so really don't want to care about the Oscars due to the fact that I usually disagree with everything they've awarded.

A Beautiful Mind beating LOTR?! Pah! Take it from me, it'll never happen..... that'd be like giving the gong to Shakespeare in Love instead of Saving Private Ryan, or Forrest Gump instead of The Shawshank Redmption, or Gandhi over E.T., or Chariots of Fire instead of Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Oliver instead of 2001. Err, hang on a minute...............
Speaking of the Oscars is it still on Sky? as i've since unsubscribed to Sky Movies.

I firmly believe that Sissy Spacek will not only win but run away with the Oscar. Her performance has been the most decorated of all categories in the run up to the Oscars (AFI, Golden Globe, etc).
I think the fact that Kidman did not even get nominated by her peers for an SAG is a pretty damning indication, although it is likely that the two performances canceled each other out
As for Best Picture, I'd have to go for the following nominations (I couldn't pick a winner at the moment):
LOTR
A Beatiful Mind
In The Bedroom
Moulin Rouge
Gosford Park
Tulse Luper

Mulholland Drive ought to win the Oscar for Best Picture but it won't. It may not even get a nomination for Best Picture, and that really would be a travesty.

I hope LOTR get's best picture but Moulin Rouge will probably get it, which isn't too bad a thing.
The only thing I fear is that the sub standard Black Hawk Down might make best picture for reasons other than the quality of the film.

The Complete List (http://www.oscar.com/nominees/nominees_index.html)
My predictions:
Best Director: Peter Jackson
Best Actor: Russell Crowe
Best Supp. Actor: Jim Broadbent
Best Foreign Film: Amelie
Best Visual Effects: L.O.T.R
Best Sound Editing: Pearl Harbour
Best Animated Feature: Shrek
Best Orig. screenplay: Memento
I'm going to put an accumulator down on those lot winning once Eurobet or Ladbrokes get the odds up.
Could be in for some nice winnings!
I have to say A Beautiful Mind Will and Should win the Best FIlm. I have seen the main contenders and even though LOTR's was brilliant in the end it fails because its the first of three films where as A Beautiful Mind is a great film on its own. It has the best acting and a complete story. Who cares if its inaccurate. What film isnt.
It deserves to win!!!!!
Tyler
My money's on Moulin Rouge. It is such a 'fantastic' (in the true meaning of the word) film, I think it will get best film.
My personal views aside, I do think a fantasy film like Moulin Rouge, LOTR or Amilie is mor elikely to win it, over a more 'realistic' film like A Beautiful Mind.
Ron Howard will probably get the best director gong, although I think Baz Lurhman should have been nominated for being able to create the organised chaos that was the first half hour of Moulin Rouge.

From the "Lord, Almighty" NYpost.com article. Very interesting. Here are a few points that bode well for LOTR: FOTR's chances of winning best picture.
1. The movie receiving the most nominations has won best picture for the past 9 years.
2. In the past 20 years (I was too lazy to go back farther), the movie receiving the most nominations won best picture 90% of the time.
[Caveat: the two exceptions are 1981 and 1991...so, 2001?]
3. In the past 20 years, when only one of the movies up for best picture has double digit nominations, it wins 87.5% of the time.
4. In the past 20 years, when a movie has 3+ nominations more than its nearest competitor (it's happened 6 times), it wins 100% of the time.

For those of a betting disposition, BlueSquare have the following odds on the winner of best film:
A Beautiful Mind evens
Lord Of The Rings 7/4
Gosford Park 9/2
In The Bedroom 8/1
Moulin Rouge 12/1
Which led me to stick a tenner on Moulin Rouge straight away, as it's clearly more likely to win than Gosford Park or In the Bedroom...
