Well I used them once to buy an Enermax Power Supply from the Today Only page and had no problems - prompt delivery and cheap price, though not so cheap with the delivery costs

I have a feeling other replies may not be so positive...

I've bought a fair bit from Scan and never had any probs - but I live close enough to go there in person and buy.

I've seen a lot of negative comments about them on this forum but the real nail in the coffin for them as far I'm concerned was when someone pretty senior from Scan posted a message on Google's supplier forum pretty much blaming customers for their tech support / returns issues (i.e. "we wouldn't have so many problems sorting out your returns if you didn't keep returning things to us"). You gotta worry about a comment like that.

Run Away!

They're fine until there's a problem with your item. Then you're into time wasting of epic proportions with their beautiful "no returns on Saturday" policy.

I live locally, but I still won't use them any more after having more problems than enough with faulty products, and customer service from hell.

Pay the extra fiver or whatever it is to get it from Dabs or somewhere reliable. You'll thank me later if there's any problems.

Just been speaking to my brother.

He ordered a motherboard from these guys.
It arrived relatively quickly (seeing as he lives in Durness, North Scotland). Upon installing and booting up, discovered the AGP slot had died.
Sent it back, heard nothing for nearly a month.
When he got in contact with them, they said the DIMM 1 slot was broken, had invalidated the warranty, and so wouldn't repay him.
Then they asked for £12 for them to send it back to him.

Now, after asking about, he's heard of scan doing this a few times before to get out of refunding the dosh.

Anyone here had problems of this kind?

I have used them several times for mail-order. While prices on the today-only pages seem keen, by the times you've added delivery (£10) and VAT it's not always the bargain that it seems.

So far I've never had the post CS problems that others have had, but I've never had to return anything either.

Their after sales service is absolutely cr*ap!

I bought one of their SC2000 DVD players about a year ago to replace an ageing 709 - I wanted a black player which could play MP3s.

Ordered it, it arrived. It had problems - the picture quality was terrible so I tried to seek a replacement.

I did the following :

I Emailed them (several times).

Their telephone lines were constantly engaged (10 calls made). The two times I did get through (to a ring tone), I held for 45 minutes waiting for an answer. The phones never got answered.

I wrote to them (twice).

I faxed them (twice).

To this day I still have not received any response to my query / complaint.

In the end I had to take it up with the credit card company who told me it would take 90days + for Visa to process the claim.

I will never order from this company again.

Rob.

Scan are a bunch of box shifting cowboys. Their prices aren't much better (if even better at all) than other places like Insight, Dabs and Overclockers.co.uk.

Their Today only used to be ok, but all it ever seems to have now is their cheap and nasty own brand networking stuff and blank CDs.

Not only that but their own brand stuff is cheap Taiwanese rubbish that i wouldnt use if i was being paid (their DVD players, 'Scan' Terra stuff, the MP3 players - haha they still sell a 16Mb MP3 Player, how useful!). A lot of their stuff is also more expensive rebranded stuff made by other people (cases and stuff)

As has already been said, they will probably be ok if you dont get any problems, but if you do then think 'worse than ebuyer'..

I bought an LG Flatron 795FT+ from them and it was pretty much DOA. I managed to get trhough to them, only to be told that 'LG monitors dont break and it was my fault'. After some arguing i sent it back (at my expense!) and they sent a replacement, which was even worse. It looked like a pack of rabid dogs had been eating the box, and the monitor was dirty and when on kept on making sparking noises. I rang them back up and they point blank refused to replace it again as 'it had been working fine when they tested it in their 'lab''. I rang up LG, complained to them and basically said 'is this how you want people to remember your kit?'. They apologised even though it wasnt their fault and sent a courier the next day with a new one (that worked - yay!) and picked up the broken one.

Seriously, avoid Scan they are AWFUL, and like i said, if you look around you can find the same stuff for cheaper usually anyway.

Well, I have had ZERO problems. I've bought a few things off them and never had a problem with delivery or anything. Also, I had a 256MB DIMM go faulty on me at christmas, so I send it back, track the RMA process on line and find that they reckon there's nothing wrong with it. So I phone them up, ask them to test it in the same motherboard as I use, and then they confirmed it was faulty and sent me out a new one. Pretty good of them I think!

I know of a good few people who regularly buy stuff off them and have never had a problem, but I also know of a few who have had RMA problems. All sorted eventually though! Just keep at them.

I agree with all the negative comments about Scam as I call them. I have a scan2000 dvd player that was replaced under warranty (I live close so they had no choice) unfortunately they replaced it with one that seriously overheated causing sound problems. They wouldn't swap it again as they said they had honoured their warranty LOL. I spent about eight hours in their reception and arguing on the phone but still didn't get a replacement even after trading standards got on to them and I wrote a letter to their MD. They told trading standards that they would replace it but just had it in for testing and ran it in their cold reception area and tried to give me screen shots that they claimed proved the player was ok. They are just full of S%$T. I ended up getting fed up and repaired it myself by fitting about five heat syncs to the power supply. I will never buy from them again ever no matter how cheap.

I have - a Quantum HD (about a year back) died on me, and having returned it (at my expense of course), they called to inform me that it hadnt made it to them in one piece - this, I would stake my life on, is cobblers - there was so much padding on this thing you could have played footy with it with no ill-effects - looks like youre S.O.L came the stern reply, and in the end I just gave it up as a bad job :( like Foxy Slamdangle says - avoid at all costs :(

Ha Ha Ha. Funniest thread I've read today!

[edit]
Seriously though - they aren't highly regarded around here. They used to be good many years ago but their main prices are now too high, their today only prices are only just about competitive (baring in mind their ridiculously high delivery charges) and god help you if you ever need to get anything RMA'd!

Well, I bought a fridge/cooler thingy from them in July last year. It conked out over Xmas so I called them up a couple of days ago and they said they'll refund it and gave me an RMA number. No arguing and no hassle. Having now packaged it up I didn't know how much it would cost to send (a fair bit I reckon) so I called them up and asked what they would recommend, and they said they'll collect it tomorrow between 10-1PM for £5+VAT. I think that's a good deal.

I've only dealt with them this one time and their service has been exceptional. If they don't issue my refund though, I will be back here to tell you about it ;)

I ordered a PC cable for my phone, they sent the wrong one, despite my order being via the telephone.

I sent it back. They only refunded the cost of the item, they kept the vat and postage that I had paid. Almost half the cost!

Nuff said, will never use them again.

I emailed them asking why they had done this, but never received a reply.

I think it just comes down to luck.

Had to return a couple of faulty items in the past, and they tested while I waited and then got me a refund within 15 minutes.

Never tried to return anything by post though...

Can't say I disagree with no returns on Saturday, have you seen how busy they get at the weekend.

I tried to return some memory and my rma request was 'lost' along with a request for a refund on a mischarged item - and this despite them all being logged in their fancy contact database. Took another couple of requests before they got back in touch.
Their telephone CS is very good though - spoken to them a couple of times, and found them helpful, empowered and quick to pick up the phone!

Overall, one of the less-muppet like retailers out there.

I bought an amp setup from them a while back. Paid for next day delivery, ordered early morning so I expected it next day.

Didn't arrive next day, excuse was that the courier lorry was full up. Whilst that I could believe but it didn't please me they refused to refund carriage.

They have lost a lot of business since :)

Bought some Memory from them that was faulty. Sent it back and they sent out a replacement which was also was faulty. Went and bought some memory locally which worked fine.
Phone up Scan for a refund, which they agreed to do. Checked my credit card statement next month and there was no refund.
phone Scan several times, each time Scan promising to refund my card. In the end I had to Get on to Barclaycard and get a refund via them.
They are ok if things work, but when it come to returning things, don't bother.

Good prices and bargains but if there's a problem :brickwall:

We bought a PC from them some time ago and it was faulty. We eventually told them to take it back and give us a refund as nothing they did got it going correctly.

I bought a modem from them. It was a diamond hardware modem, all shrink wrapped and new.

I installed it and the drivers came up saying it was a SST modem which basically said it was a Win modem.

I got it working but it would not connect to my ISP at anything over 1200bps on a 1Ghz Athlon!

I took the modem back at 3pm on a weekday and was told I had to wait in the support queue. There was 2 people in front of me and I waited for over an hour.

When I finally got to the front I was marched straight to the front of the queue of people waiting to buy stuff (where I started over an hour earlier) and they were gonna swap it out but.... they had none in stock. So I paid an extra £5 to get one that worked with Linux. I just wanted to get out the shop, the owners don't care for customer service just profit.

I have not bought anything from them since. I must add that I used to buy all my hardware from them but I have had problems with quite a few bits of kit (esp. memory) where they claimed it was top spec. I found out later that it was not top spec and ended up buying stuff from somewhere else.

I bought a CPU / Mobo / Memory bundle 18 months ago and the mainboard died. It took them 3 weeks to replace it with an older model (no LCD diagnostics on mainboard which the original had). After sending it back twice they STILL never sent the correct mobo.

In the end I gave up

I totally understand what you mean. They sent me the wrong mobo as well, but in my case, it was from a range (the MSI KT4), I ordered the Bluetooth one, but they sent me the one without and so sent the additional box which was supposed to be attatched to it. But still managed to leave out the ALL IMPORTANT cable to connect the two together!!! It's been like 3 months now yet no reply!!! I've called so many times and everytime they say they are still awaiting stock for it!!!! ARRGGHH!!!
