should i wait for this, or go for R2.
R2 looks very good, i really do wanna get it, but will the R1 have seamless branching?
The seamless branching idea should have been nixed at the start! The scenes that are added are just longer more violent versions of current scenes... So simply including the Dir Cut would be sufficient! I doubt ANYONE would watch the Theatrical Version with a choice! It ain't like The Abyss or T2 where there's a huge difference between versions!

Afraid I don't agree with the previous posting. I honestly think that the original Theatrical Version is superior to the Directors Cut of Robocop (the director's cut really just adds more gore to scenes that are in the movie) and I think where there are multiple versions of films the companies should make every effort to include them on the disc to give the viewer a choice of which version they are going to see.

I am alwasy going to hold out for R1 if the R2 comes out first - just in case. Look at Terminator for an example. I reckon there will be at some point.

Agreed, but if MGM were going to give us this choice using branching, they either should've done it properly or not at all. They could easily have included the DC on a separate disk instead (a la the French T2:UE), and while that probably means the price would be a little higher, it's better than "integrated" branching.
Here's hoping the R1 release gets it right....

I think in the case for Robocop by shortening the violent scenes it completely changes the whole tone of them. I for one was never quite sure that I was suppose to be laughing at the ED-209 scene! However the OTT violence in the Dir Cut makes it quite apparent that I was!

I agree with the above, Murphy's death and the ED209 scenes are made even more 'powerful' and resonant by that addition of further violence.
BTW, I feel very strongly that the original theatrical cut should be included on ALL discs as this is usually the version that made the film popular. I usually pefer director's cuts, but would like to be ablke to see the original. For example, Aliens. I mean, if Star Wars ever hits DVD do you honestly think that they'll include the original versions (or even the '97 SEs by the sounds of it) ?

In the case of proper "director's cuts" that add sunstantial scenes, I totally agree.
But we're just talking about a few extra shots here. I would have much preferred the "director's cut" version to be the ONLY version. Or at the very least, make the "director's cut" version the standard title on the disc, and integrate the theatrical cut scenes with the layer-change pauses... because more people will watch the director's cut version.
For the record, I like Verhoeven's explanations about why the extra-violence shots are there. In the board-room, the more Kinney is shot into a bloody mess, the sharper the satire of corporate mentality becomes. The more shocking and gory Murphy's death is, the more we empathise with his character because we haven't had long enough to understand his character yet, and it also makes Verhoeven's idea of crucifixion (Robocop being Jesus) more powerful.
But anyway. The T2 Ultimate Edition had extra-violence shots included for the first time in the UK (BBFC "all previous cuts waived"), and they didn't shout about it. In fact, nobody even mentions it. Some people don't even know unless they are told. It is just a shame this Robocop release puts so much stock in its extra-violence shots. They should have just been re-incorporated without any fuss.

T2 wasnt famous for its high level of violence, with Robocop thats always been an important part of the film so they have every right to shout about it being the DC.
