I can tell you which one NOT to get - the phillips ones - cheap they may be but if you're looking for an alarm clock it's useless.

You only get an option of increasing volume on the alarm no matter if its radio or buzzer. Hearing Terry Wogan get increasingly louder to deafening levels over a 30 second period is something I never wanted to experience!

Ooohhhh, just had a look. It doesn't say how loud it goes, it needs to have a bit of kick to it as she will use it for music in the bedroom....

If you read the reviews the sound is quite good. I got one and the sound is good for what it is.

Just got the Pure Chronus iDock ( http://www.pure.com/products/product.asp?Product=VL-60903&Category=Bedroom ) from John Lewis (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=57&url=http://www.johnlewis.com/230441883/Product.aspx), where it was half price when you buy an ipod (mine was busted so this was a good deal for me). I think other places have it cheaper. Very happy so far. That one has DAB too, which might not be on your wish list.

Oohh, that looks a good one. Doesn't say it works with 4th gen Nano though :(

Absolutely works with the 4th Gen Nano, as I just bought a replacement 16GB iPod (as part of the deal).

As an alarm clock it has many functions, arguably a little complicated, but it does give you the multiple alarms with multiple sources, which can activate on a number of different (e.g. weekday, weekend, sat, sun, one time) days, so that's reasonable.

The sound is great.
