View Full Version : Total Recall - SE in UK or Wot?
I've been putting of buying the french version for a while now because i was wondering when Momentum would release it here. Any news on how soon? If so would it be better? Does anyone here bought the french version from dvdzone2? Is it any good? Is the tin the same as T2? Have i broke the record for the number of questions in one post? Have I?
Any reason why you ain't already bought the excellent r1 SE? Other than the bok packaging :brickwall
FFS i'm a R2 PAL fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, tell me, what does the R1have that the french SE doesn't? (The R2 already win out with the tin, which is a big plus for me, looks nice against the T2 tin)
I believe that the commentary is missing from the French one.
Don't own a copy, so it's anecdotal evidence ! ;)
not according to dvdzone2
In that case DVDZone2 looks to be mistaken, as not only do I remember the lack of commentary being mentioned on these Forums a number of times, this review (http://www.devildead.com/indexfilm.php3?FilmID=204) (although my French isn't too hot) seems to confirm it.
Fingers crossed Momentum just use a nice normal plastic case and don't try and be creative like the R1 release.
I have the French R2 - there is no commentary...
...But you do get other extras to compensate plus the pic quality is better.
I'm quite happy.:)

Actually I seem to remember reading somewhere that the R1 has now started to come in normal cases ( the tin was meant to be Limited after all).
Anyone know anything about this?

It's true (read about it on the DVD Talk forum a while ago). All the online retailers still seem to be selling the tin though so it seems they not that limited after all. Anyway, is the tin packaging really that bad?

It's not so much the tin, it's the flimsy paper effort you have to perch it on.
Of course the best option is to download the cover and stick it in an Amaray! :p
BTW - Verhoevon's (sp?) has had one too many Dime bars judging from his commentarys.
He r0x0rs!!

The commentary actually isn't that great - Arnie has a talent for stating the obvious.
"Ah, yes this is where I am chasing the bad guys"
"I am now taking the tracker out through my nose - this is really a model ha ha ha"

I'd second that. It's not one of Paul V's best. Whenever he starts discussing anything interesting about the political/satirical elements of the film, Arnie always seems to butt in to say something like, "look - dat's me breaking de bad guy's neck wid my powerful arms." Didn't he get paid something like $75k to do the TR:SE commentary...?

:D :D
Yeah, that's what makes it even worse. At least on the Hollow Man commentary, Kevin Bacon actually let Paul speak occasionally. Personally, I'd much rather hear discussion on the story/production than a running description of what's happening on-screen. Perhaps Arnie didn't realise we'd be watching the film while listening to it? :p

I truly hope not, but that does sound realistic considering his rumoured T3 payment.
So if the commentary on the R1 disc is not much good, and that's the only thing missing from the R2 French version. Should i go for the frenchy one then, cause these are the other advanages i see in the R2 version
A tin (with amaray inside like T2 in the uk?)
Other extra's to make up lack of commentary
PAL (For me it's a plus)
Cheap (£16)
Madm@tt???? help need your opinon!!
Here we go...
No complaints with picture quality - can't compare it with anything else. It's anamorphic and generally is a fine presentation (better than what I've heard about the R1 SE at least).
Sound quality is good, not great, but I cannot comment as I do not have a surround setup.
In terms of extras you get the 30 minute (retrospective) documentary from the R1 SE called "Imagining Total Recall"; a 10 minute featurette (EPK fluff in English); a trailer (in English); Storyboard to film comparison (in English); filmographies (in French - easy to understand though); a photo gallery and 2 more documentaries in French (one about Philip K. Dick and his effect on the film industry - quite interesting and about 13mins. long and the other a 20+ minute doc. on the make up in the film - not so good).
The menus are very good (in French) and there is an easter egg to find (a trivia game in French).
So, if you can read (very basic) French - for the menus - you would probably like the French version. The main other problem is the two documentaries made for the disc in French with no subtitles, not a problem for me as I have a good knowledge of the language but as they make up a substantial portion of the second disc (33-34 mins.).
I'm happy, I thought missing out on the commentary would be more vital than most people in this thread have made it out to be so if you are looking for a good overall package go for this.
Matt
BTW - you also miss out on the "Rekall Vacation Package" (something like that) which has loops of various planet designs playing to relax you...... I don't think it's too essetial though...
EDIT - Yes there is a keep case inside the Tin - not an amaray, but good enough.
