I am sorting out my parents with a new tv (it'll be there first tv in a good 10 years) and a new dvd player to go with it... I want to get something with great upscaling capabilities and have been thinking that getting a second hand Toshiba HD-EP30 might be a good idea..?

I'm assuming they can be had for cheap and have heard that new firmware can make them multi-region.. so might be a good idea? plus if they fancy buying a couple of cheap hd-dvd's then they can see what hd looks like!

any thoughts?

I'd get a sony S350 if i were in your situation, yes, its a little bit more money but the hack is much easier and your parents can just go out and buy a BR disc when they like, should they want to.

It takes a long time to start up (and if you turn it off at the wall it insists on you setting the time when you turn it on again - WTF does a player need the time and date set???), you'd be much better getting a proper DVD player, or the S350 if you want HD as well.

And I don't think they can be got cheap.
