View Full Version : Possibly cheap Verbatim dvdrs at Staples
Just popped into Staples to buy 100 x Verbatim DVDR-Rs.
The 100 tubs are £21.99 but next to them were tubs of 25 which mentioned half price / £4.99 (so £19.96 for 100).
Wishing to save £2, took 4 x 25 tubs to the counter and they scanned in as £13.68 so £3.42 for 25 discs.

Any idea on the dye? Or if made in Japan/India etc?
Thanks
On the tubs, says "Made in Taiwan".
Same type I've been using for ages now without a problem (well they did change the pacaging and disc fronts a while ago)
Discs say around the centre:
Z349E1023-04690E22 and ZD9906-DVR-J47F4
Not sure if that helps identify dyes.

Hi There,
Can confirm this - just bought 4 packs of 16x Advanced Azo+ verbatims for £13.68.
Looks like it depends where you get them from - mine are made in India and have ZD4079-DVR-J47C1. MID in Nero is MCC 03RG20.
I've not had any problems with these discs - are actually one of the first 16x rated discs that my LG drive actually recognises as 16x.
Hope that helps.
Several reports of skipping issues with ZD9906-DVR-J47F4 - however i suspect that it's down to individual hardware/disc configs and firmware. Mentioned over at CDFreaks and Slysoft forum....

Picked a few packs up myself this morning, cheers OP.
Thanks Xenole, mine write at 20x.
Label states A MITSUBISHI KAGAKU MEDIA COMPANY.
Any of these turning up as Taiyo Yuden Dye?
always worth checking out instore/poundstretcher as well, for these - i got a pack of 50 16x verbs from there a few weeks ago for 6.99
edit: for the record, i think the ones i got were mcc dye
All this talk of dye confies me, obviously there and good and bad types but can someone summise whats good and bad.?
Are the ones in Staples Dual layer?
These will be single layer DVDs, You're looking at a bit more cash for dual layer.
The Dye on a disc is what can make or break a disc tbh some dyes good some dyes pants adn some even fake the dye ID.
CDfreaks used to have a nice list of the ID's and codes that were kicking about at any one time, not sure they still do it tho.
The Verb discs using the TY dye (TYG03 iirc) are the best discs I've used in the past few years, coaster rate, next to none, compatibility, non issue, quality, top notch, manufacture irregularities, none that have caused any major issues, data retention, superb.
Data retention may seem like an odd one too some of you but theres countless times I've went back to discs from multiple manu's to find they've magically lost all readability/data.
Gonna pop to the one in gateshead later, if its still there its been aaages since I headed over and see what they have.
Has anyone had a TY dye reading from these yet?

Had a look in Staples. The Verbatims were a real mix.
25 packs - DVD-R were made in India, DVD+R were made in Taiwan.
50 packs - all made in India
100 packs DVD-R - some made in India, some made in Japan

My local Maplins were selling them at £14.99 for 100, (50% off apparently) they also had 100 CD-R's in the same basket for £14.99  not sure if this is a nationwide thing.
£15 per 100 tub on maplins site.
£11.49 for the CDs, not a bad price indeed.
Had a quick scout on a couple of other sites, the DVDs made in japan seem to have TY dye on them if it is indeed this series they have in stock.
Were teh cake wrappers silver/blue or the yellow/blue ones?
Think I'll fly by maplins later too for some CDs and DVDs will probably be split across maplin and staples to see what they are.
