View Full Version : Neil Gaiman and Avalon
Neil Gaiman had been reportedly working on an English adaption of Avalon but this comment was posten on his website a few weeks ago..
A few FAQ questions about what I was doing on the film AVALON and what I thought of it. I was brought in to, essentially, write some voice-over dialogue and narrative for it, to buttress the story. Which I did – two or three entirely different drafts, with different characters doing their own monologues and dialogue, obliquely clarifying, amplifying and setting up some of the themes in the film. Not sure how much, if any, plans there are at this point to use what I did. (The original plan was that my voice-overs, like all the dialogue, would have been in Polish. The last thing I heard was that they have decided to go a different way on it, and they may be dubbing the film into English, which I think would be a pity.) What do I think of Avalon? I think it’s a very beautiful film with some profound moments, some bits that work better if you’ve seen it a few hundred times, and some bits that don’t. I hope that it gets released and people get to see it and that it does well – there’s some great vision in there.
Many thanks for this post, Denver! I'd seen a few reports on "Avalon" some of which seemed to contradict each-other about Neil Gaiman's contribution. This clears it up nicely, for now at any rate....
I only just picked Avalon up before Christmas on eBay, and its nice to see a bit of loving care going into this beautiful film...
I'd have to say, I'd prefer the subtitled myself to ANY dubbed score - in any movie...

I saw this at its UK premier on sat - a truely superb film.
Generally I'm not in favour of dubbed scores, and I dont think they would do the film any favours by dubbing it.

You can pick this up on a R3 DVD for about 6 pounds plus P+P.
I plan to buy this and check it soon seeing that most people rave about it.

I must be having a slow day today, but which Hong Kong stores are doing free p&p at the moment then.
I really fancy having a look at Avalon...

A²: Cheers.
Wasn't expecting to see that when I clicked on this thread today.
www.dddhouse.com have it in stock
Some background on this film and Oshii who I "met" at a film fest on Saturday.
I missed the name of the guy but evidently he will not be working with someone that he's worked with on other films again; they had a major falling out. (not the guy that does the music - he feels that he's the only person who can interpret what he means)
He filmed in Poland because it was the closest ideal to the type of scenery he wanted.
He didn't get the actors to speak in English because he liked the sound of Polish.
He also prefers to see a film with subtitles because he likes the difference between hearing the sound of a character and reading something else on screen.
He is currently working a new piece of anime but has been forbidden to talk about it.
He declined to comment on the similarity of the look of his film and Final Fantasy. However he did say that he didn't like and would not work on computer generated films since they were not very innovative and did not have the special quality that he feels "ordinary" anime has.
Just to name drop a bit more ;) I met Dario Argento also and have to say he did not look well!

I really fancy having a look at Avalon... etailers in Hong Kong, delivering to Hong Kong addresses. sorry if I didn't explain it more clearly (well it took me more than a month to answer that :P)
Just checking out the sites listing the R3 version. Appears to be in DD5.1 but can't get a handle on the aspect ratio. Anyone know what it is?

It seems that the R3 is non-anamorphic. Does anyone know if the subs are in the picutre or the border - i.e. will I be able to watch it zoomed on my 16:9 set, or will it be a rectangle in the middle of the screen job.

The subs are in the border of the R3 Panorama Entertainment release. The picture is pretty good for a non-anamorphic DVD.
Right based on the views here ordered a copy from DDDHouse! Hope its as good as you lot say;)
there is sooo little dialogue that anyone who wants a dubbed version should be shot ;-)
p.s. where do i go to have someone explain the end to me? ;-)
