The Making Of Gavin And Stacey (title tbc) takes a look behind the scenes at the hit, award-winning comedy series which recently moved to BBC One.

BBC Four

BBC Four brings viewers Crooked House, three sumptuous ghost stories woven together for a spooky Christmas treat. Written by Mark Gatiss (The League Of Gentlemen) and directed by Damon Thomas (Beethoven), the drama boasts a wonderfully diverse cast which includes Julian Rhind-Tutt and illusionist Derren Brown in his debut dramatic role as the mysterious Sir Roger Widdowson.

There's also a feast of music and dance in the BBC Four schedules.

In Sacred Music: The Story Of Allegri's Miserere, Simon Russell Beale tells the story behind one of the most popular pieces of sacred music ever written. Once decreed by the Pope to be too beautiful to be heard outside the Sistine Chapel, Allegri's Miserere has become one of the best loved and most recognisable pieces of choral music, famous for its soaring high notes. The programme features a full performance of the piece by the award-winning choir The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers from LSO St Luke's.

Prog Rock Britannia is a comprehensive, feature-length documentary about progressive music and the generation of bands that made it – from the international success stories of Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson and Jethro Tull, to the trials and tribulations of the lesser-known bands such as Caravan and Egg.

The Swing Thing traces the story of swing music, from the jazz clubs of the Twenties, through the heady days of the Rat Pack and Sinatra to modern stars such as Harry Connick Jr and Michael Buble.

In Ten Best Sacred Christmas Classics, a fascinating line-up of musicians and music lovers including Billy Bragg, Katherine Jenkins, Michael Portillo and David Soul talk engagingly about ten much-loved pieces of Christmas music.

BBC Young Musician Of The Year 2008 – Concerto Final gives viewers a chance to see the concerto performances in full of the five exceptionally talented young musicians who competed for this year's coveted prize.

Children's

For younger viewers, CBBC's Dustbin Baby on BBC One is a powerful family drama, based on the novel by best-selling author, Jacqueline Wilson. The 90-minute film features a star-studded cast including Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply, Bend It Like Beckham, Pierrepoint), Dakota Blue Richards (The Golden Compass) and David Haig (The Thin Blue Line, Four Weddings And A Funeral).

The heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting story follows a young teenager called April whose troubled life began in a dustbin – a new-born baby, abandoned and alone, not celebrated, not wanted but discarded and left like so much rubbish in an industrial bin behind a pizza parlour.

On CBBC children can pig out on a new festive episode of Pinky & Perky and enjoy a ChuckleVision Christmas Special.

For the under-sixes over on CBeebies there is a special edition of 3rd & Bird and Lenny Henry stars in a wintery slice of Big And Small.

I looked at the schedule today, specifically to see what the big Christmas Day film is on BBC1. It came as no surprise atall, that for yet another year they're showing an aminated film as the big film! Wallance and Grommit. What is it with the BBC nowadays, who insist on showing these animated films as the big Christmas Day film?? It's been like this since around 2002. Crazy. Years ago they showed stuff like Indiana Jones, ET, Back To The Future, etc. Films for all the family to enjoy. Not all of us who watch TV on Christmas Day are children, or will be watching with children. So why do they(the BBC) keep picking these animated films every Christmas?

Looks like I'll have to choose a film to watch on DVD as our big film in the 3pm slot for yet another year. Current possibilities include Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Lost Crystal Skull, and Spider Man 3.

Spider Man 3 not a good film then? The latest Indiana Jones has mixed reviews, but I might enjoy it. Some of the films I've watched haven't had that great reviews, but I found them really good myself.

Will anyone else here planning on watching a film on DVD on the big day? If so, which film?

Would be nice if there was actually a good film on TV on Christmas afternoon though. So I wont have to buy a DVD to put on instead.

Wallace and Grommit, Toy Story, Chicken Run. Sigh.

Wow..thank God I don't have a tv! Packed with great stuff like Eastenders, Coronation St, Strictly Come Dancing (on ice as well), 85 Wallace & Grommit Films, TOTP (1h45 of the best songs of 2008 - what are they doing for the extra 1h40?), Doctor Who yet again with another apparent invasion of Earth etc.
At least C4 have pushed the boat out with Friends, Girls Aloud in Concert (saw that 2 weeks ago), Simpsons etc.......completely different from their normal everyday schedules!

Here's BBC1's Xmas Day listing from 2pm onwards:
14:00 Top of the Pops
15:00 HM The Queen
1510 FILM: Shark Tale
16:30 FILM: Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit
17:50 BBC News
18:00 Doctor Who: The Next Doctor
19:00 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special
20:00 EastEnders
20:30 Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death
21:00 EastEnders
21:30 The Royle Family
22:30 Blackadder Rides Again
23:35 BBC News
23:45 FILM: Bend It Like Beckham

Looks like ITV could be in for another ratings hammering this year, although according to someone I know in marketing ITV are OK with this as they know ads are hard to sell on Xmas day anyway and research show people are just not interested on Xmas Day. This is why they have there big hitters in the run up (X Factor, IACGMOOH, etc) to maximize ad revenue.

 what about Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death, although I would have to question if showing Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit on the same day just a few hours before is a good move.
Would have been better if they showed the film on another day (Boxing Day?) really.

I think the Blackadder one will be worth a watch as well, especially as its the first documentary about it that Atkinson is part of, can also see me recording The Royle Family as well.
Im sure my daughter will want TOTP recorded & Ill have to watch it with her to let her know how much better it/music was in my day:nuts:

Films for all the family to enjoy. Not all of us who watch TV on Christmas Day are children, or will be watching with children.

Just because something is animated, doesn't automatically make it a kids only zone.

Spider Man 3 not a good film then? The latest Indiana Jones has mixed reviews, but I might enjoy it. Some of the films I've watched haven't had that great reviews, but I found them really good myself.

Wallace and Grommit, Toy Story, Chicken Run. Sigh.

Spiderman 3 is not a good film, and I think the BBC might have struggled if they had tried to get the rights to show the latest Indy on Christmas Day, given that it will probably be one of the biggest selling DVD's this Christmas.

The 3 animated efforts you mentioned are all vastly superior to your live action suggestions, wether you're a kid or and adult.

Any of the programmes listed will be a damn sight more entertaining than actually wanting to watch EE on Christmas day. Can't wait to see if BBC Scotland try to fit in a River City episode instead of the new W&G short film. Always personally preferred the telly on Boxing day if truth be told do find watching telly on Christmas day just a wee bit strange, but then again I'm too old to play with lego or a big cardboard box now so it's the goggle box or in the lav' throwing up too much booze!

Am I the only one excited about a new Jonathan Creek!?

No i'm well made up about it. We've just finished watching the last of the original series. Its aged very well. I asked the missus (she's American) why she thought it never crossed over to the US. She reckoned it was because they need just about every character to be young and pretty like CSI. There is actually some details on the BBC Creek webpages saying pretty much the same thing.

Does anyone know when it's on?

How stupid is that to put the two Wallace and Gromit things on the same day. I hope my kid doesn't get up too early because she'll be a nightmare by 8.30 for the new W&G.

I see ITV is even worse, "It'll be Alright on the Night" - wow they really are pushing the boat out this year

Standard everyday tv schedule with an extra movie thrown in and the word "Xmas" in front of something.

Do like the BBC's promo reel though where the video stops during Wallace & Grommit. Probably better than everything that's on this year.

Really looking forward to the new Wallace and Gromit! Aardman fan here (apart from Flushed Away). The Royal Family might be worth a gander as well.

Regarding Xmas movies. It just isn't same anymore. BBC and ITV have to compete with DVDs, PPV/OnDemand and Sky Movies whatever now. They could show a big film but it would've already been on DVD, Sky and PPV. If people want films they'll go to those sources now. Plus, ITV films are stuffed with commercials for Boxing Day sales. The days of having only four channels are long gone.

I've just been going through the Christmas Radio Times and setting recordings for all the shows I want to see over the festive season. There's less on worth watching than ever this year and it's becoming increasingly clear that ITV have just given up.

BTW Wasn't there supposed to be a third Sally Lockhart (Billie Piper) mystery? Can't see it on anywhere.

Well Shooting Stars night was very enjoyable. I forgot how funny it was back in the day.. I went to see it live on tour when I was a kid.
Then the new one started off slow, but Matt Lucas was just as good as ever and the end with Jack Dee with a tit on his head was hilarious.

Why is everything on BBC1's Xmas lineup being repeated 2-3 days later but advertised like its a new show and still in a prime time slot? I'm all for repeating stuff in case you miss it but put it out late for video'ers and don't promote it like its another new show. I've recorded 2 or 3 things already in the last 2 weeks that I've seen days before. QI, HYGNFY and others filling up the schedule to make it look like they have twice as much stuff as they have. BBC2 is almost as bad, Three Men in more than 1 boat is on twice in 3 days as was Top Gear.

Am I asking too much for some more than what we got?

Jonathan Creek was just as good as ever. Sheridan Smith did well, that painting was seriously creepy... it was all there. I think it was better than the later Julia Sawalha series even.. some of those dragged on and had lame mysteries.

I hope they are doing a full new series... please BBC!... pay them whatever they want!

Gavin and Stacy was ok.

Agree with that.

Though we did guess quite early on that it had something to do with the bath as the camera seemed to focus on it far too often

Agree with that.

Though we did guess quite early on that it had something to do with the bath as the camera seemed to focus on it far too oftenI thought that too, it was still pretty eerie when they panned across all the dead bodies underwater  The painting was seriously freaky too, I bet there have been some nightmares about it :gag:

I agree about Creek, was good to see it back on the screen even though i'd guessed the murder 'weapon' well in advance of the reveal even if i didn't know how it actually worked. I'd watch a new series as well, would be nice if they made it.

I've just gotten around to watching "Crooked House" ... a 3 part Mark Gatiss written ghost story. Was on BBC4 at Christmas. It might have the same name, but it's got nothing to do with the Agatha Christie book.
It was really good. Like TV used be. I recommend it to any creepy 80's kids Tv fans. It's also brilliant proof you don't need a lot to make a nice little ghost story.

Gatiis is/was the new "Man in Black" on radio. Really enjoyed the Crooked House and a great throwback, in a good way, to those older M.R. James adaptions the BBC used to do.

what about miracle on 34th st. (newer version), and the santa clause? (in fact, any christmas-specific films). is there a clear guide anywhere that just lists the films being shown?

Xenole

I suggest either getting a random copy of a tv guide mag from any point of the year and writing Xmas on the front and a can of paint ready in order to watch this year's "offerings".
