Ok, Just started some research into this...

I have a room which is about 11ft x 17ft. I have been finally granted permission for a projector which is fortunate as the second reception room has lovingly been called the 'cinema' room since we moved in 16 mths ago.

A few restrictions, I have are....the room has been painted already so the wall's cannot be projected on to (unsuitable colours) and I cannot mount the projector or any screen. I havee seen a portable Sapphire screen which is 84" (diagonal), which is costly, at £250 but it seems suitable.

Would the Optoma HD65 be suitable for me? I want to use it for a combination of films and gaming. I know the lack of a formal set-up will cause problems with speaker placement etc.

On the HD65, you're looking at a projector position somewhere between 9'5" and 10'4" for an 84" diagonal 16:9 image. Is that do-able in your room layout (bearing in mind it'll need power and connections to your sources)?

Should be, I plan on leaving the projector, amp and other bobs on a tall console that can be rolled about as appropriate.

As it's a DLP based projector, it would be a good idea to get an audition to make sure you're not susceptible to the rainbow effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLP). It's otherwise a popular choice given its cost (alongside the Optoma HD700X which is similiar but has slightly lower contrast and brightness plus a 1 year rather than 3 year warranty) - there's a long discussion thread over at AVForums.

Dixons with what are now expired coupons, HD65 (£65 off) and Happy5 5% off.

Wow, not hooked the system up fully and can only project onto a cream wall, but wow. The image is fantastic, 100" looks fantastic! Relatively quiet, or will be once the sound system kicks in!
