Can anyone tell me what the resrtictions are to copying one of your games to the HDD and loading it from there?
i.e. Whats to stop me renting a game from Blockbuster, copying it to me HDD and then returning to the shop??

You have to have the game disc in the drive to play it :D
The small fact that you still need the disk in the drive in order to play it from hdd ;)

nothing stops you from doing that. you'll only be able to play the game though if the disc is in the drive.

Had a play around with the new dash at lunchtime. There seemed to be a lot of problems getting trials of the new community games - can't remember the errors it was coming up with though.
It seemed pretty responsive though.

I'm getting it needs a media update but it can't retrieve the information from X box live.
does transcode360 still work with it?
I use Connect360 and it seems to be recognising it as it's playing my mp3's, showing my pictures and listing my visual media.It just wont play the flippin' avi's at the mo!

Someone over at DS also said they got a similiar message but it worked once they downloaded the update.

Downloaded and installed. Must admit im not overly impressed with the visuals of it, much prefer the more adult look of the old blade system

No. But there is a mini version of it you get via the guide button on the controller.

New one looks much nicer and fresh also now really shows of your HDTV as everything is nice and crisp. But more importantly the actual dash itself is so much faster and you can navigate through all the video folders from a PC without any delay now.
And most importantly for me they have fixed the issue where if you have a 1080p screen videos now fill the screen rather then having to go into the display menu to change the setting every bloody time.

Breath of fresh air. Cleaner, sharper, faster & looks proper HD rather than the tired old Blades system. :thumbs:

Haven't updated yet, but am surprised by that comment. Adult? Always referred to the blades as resembling Tomy's 'My First Console' myself they were that kiddy to my eyes!

There are some themes already on there...I've got 'night' at the moment.
I've only just noticed that the Day and night themes each have different backgrounds for Friends compared to 360/spectrum. I think they must be random because someone was playing Fallout 3 and had a police car behind them.

Mines been locking when coming out of friends details as well. And just now trying to download content. Hope it's just due to live being strained

I've had that a couple of times. But the last time I left it and it sorted itself out. Maybe Live overload currently slowing down the updating from the servers.
I like the new look it but I'm never going to visit 95% of the menus. My routine is usually switch on > arcade games > play.

Thats very strange just finished playing that and not a peep out of my 360 and the level loads were like 5 seconds.

it's probably the fans your hearing now. I got myself a 360 last week and it's pretty damn noisy, even when playing demos (no disc). From what i've read the noise depends on what fans the 360 has.
anyone have a 60Gb 360 with Nidec fans? i've the DC brushless fans and was wondering if there's any point taking the console back to Argos on the off chance I get a quieter one?

That The Day The Earth Stood Still trailer in HD is all very impressive but good god does that film look bad.

Am not liking the new interface but suppose will have to get use to it. I had a game disc in my tray and the amount of times I loaded it by accident was untrue while browsing around the interface, locked up a few times also and I wish I could switch off Avatars, I don't see the point.

Scrolling through my played games list on the main dashboard does my eyes in.
I deleted all my downloaded themes as they look crap with the new dashboard, also discovered that themes and gamerpics downloaded on the US marketplace don't work as well. Are there any premium themes available yet that are free?
I think the Avatars could've had more options in some places. You can't customise the colours of your clothes but you can pick from about 200 different sets of eyes, which I thought was strange.
Apart from all that, quite like it although Marketplace is barely working.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the avatars either tbh. Made a silly one, and guess I'll get used to them. Happy with the rest of the look though.

If you don't mind opening your console up the talismoon fans are supposed to be a fair bit better than the stock fans for noise and also more efficient at keeping things cooler. Was thinking about swapping mine out but after hearing my friends 360 mine is pretty quiet in comparison.

Yeah, My 360 is around 18-24 months old so i probably have outdated hardware, I also keep my 360 outside of my media centre for maximum ventilation so that doesn't help matters.
I just can't find a happy medium, either my amps up too loud that it wakes all and sundry or it's so quiet all i hear is the 360. :(

I tried a direct comparison with Midnight Club (closest game to hand) and the difference was night and day between the disk spinning and the install.
Not silent, but only a fraction noisier than my PS3 once it was installed.

how easy is it to do? unless my amp is on watching HDDVD's is just annoying, will be out of the 3yr warranty soon so would consider opeing it up...

The avatars are a ridiculous idea really. Love the interface, but the whole avatar thing really lowers the standards somewhat. Makes it look all Fisher Price.
There should be an option to not participate, but I think you have to. They add nothing to the experience, apart from some desperate attempt at Wii-esque family friendliness.

There is one incredibly useful addition now: the 1680x1050 resolution which is perfect for my monitor, and now gives a correct aspect ratio. Instead of stretching the 16:9 picture to 16:10, it now keeps the 16:9 with letterboxing. HUD minimaps are now circles instead of ovals! People aren't too tall and thin any more!
Also I see an option to not autorun a game as soon as you put it in the drive. That may be sometimes useful.
As for everything else, it's the same, only irritatingly cool. I found that I couldn't make an avatar that didn't look like an annoying media cretin.

Have you tried doing it the 'network test' way? i.e. test your connection in network settings.
Otherwise, Live is pretty much being hammered at the moment. I was amazed that I had a few hours of flawless GOW2 co-op earlier, but it seems more flakey now. Maybe wait till tomorow?

Been playing with it a bit more now and I think once your use to it, it will be really good and much easier to use etc...
One thing I can't sort out though when I go into certain things like "Edit Profile" the screen suddenly stretches and I can't see the top and bottom. I have it set to 720p and not really sure what to change to stop it.
EDIT: Forgot as well in the last thread I asked about copying COD PAL onto the HD and using my knackered NTSC version in the drive. Well tried it and it works fine, copied my sons PAL version to the HD, stuck my NTSC version in and it played from the HD. Tried the 2 levels that wouldn't load off the NTSC cd and they loaded fine.

I've got a 120gb HDD transfer cable & disc here that I will quite happily loan as long as it's posted back when done.
Now that the Avatars are out, I played the new Scene It: Box Office Smash this evening & your Avatar is integrated into the game very well with some decent & varied animations. The game itself is much improved over the original, lots of different round types & most importantly, it plays online & not just a cutdown version like Buzz on the PS3, it's the full game, movie clips & all. I played one full game & it ran smoothly, no different to offline.
As much as I like Buzz, this has advanced ahead. :thumbs:

Well i have the Nidec Fans in my Elite, and they are just a quiet hum sound, i cant compare them to the brushless fans though, but Nsb on here has the brushless fans in his 360 and by what he says they do sound as if there quite a bit louder than the nidec's

Four months for the cable :( It says 4-6 weeks on the form. It was a pain I couldn't phone support and order one, as now it's some annoying automated system 'Brad' (or a nameless woman) who insists that accessories is pronounced 'excessories' and that took me about four times to pronounce it for their crappy voice recognition to work.

I also got Carcassone for free but have never played that.
My cable and disk to go from 20Gb to 60GB took less than a week to arrive and this was only 2 weeks ago.
Just called them up and they quoted 5-10 days but was here no more than 7 days later and that included the weekend and it was coming from Germany based on the postage label.
A guy at work tried to install the update last night and it just went to a blue screen. It seems to have bricked his console as it wont get past this blue screen now. Anything he can do other than phoning M$?

Loaded this up last night and to show how well I had my ear to the ground wasn't expecting this huge dashboard turnaround. Just wanted to play Gears but then got sucked in to half an hour of making and ditching avatars in the vain attempt to get one that didn't look like Mr Burns on chemo. Didn't succeed.
I don't think that I like the whole new interface and especially the avatars, it does seem very kids orientated but I'll probably get used to it.
If you don't mind that'd be great - haven't even taken the elite out of it's box yet I'd figured about a week for it to arrive (posted application today)!

Well I had to re-download my ACC/mpeg4 update, and now I have some 6 year old's idea of a cartoon version of me all over the screen, prehaps I can add some tubbie custard for 200pts...sooo gaaay.

A number of forums have been passing the same kit around for months so I think you were just unlucky. Or you were doing something wrong :)
I did my update this morning and the whole thing took about 2 minutes from start to finish. Spent another few minutes making my avatar but I'm sure I'll edit that later....

Exactly the same things happened here for me - one bug that needs fixing at least, but pretty much everything else seems to work ok.
How do i get my profile to auto-sing in once i turn onhe xbox it always waits for me to sing into the profile .......
Via the dash guide find 'profile' then it should be the last option 'auto sign in' there's one for xbox live and another for messenger ( I have the messenger one turned off) if you aren't connected to the net, when you turn on the 360 it just signs into your account offline

I had this happen to me a few times last night. Not sure of the conditiions it was happening in though, but each time it happened it did come back to life after a minute or two. Only reason I noticed it did was because I was chatting to someone when it happened first time and I could still hear him and he could hear me so just waited... :doh:

It has to be done via the mini-dash IIRC (i.e. pressing the big green X/guide button).
I only have My Xbox, Welcome and Friends on the main blades. I seem to have lost Marketplace and can only access it via the bit silver xbox button!!

Open dash guide, scroll left to games, click on achievements find your games with 0 gamerscore and there will be an option to delete game history by pressing X
Can't believe how naive I was last night.. ripped GoW2 to the HDD as a test and was looking forward to some Wife Acceptance Points from tidying all the nearby green boxes into a cupboard and then:
"Please insert Gears of War 2 disc"

I'm very impressed with what they've done with this update. It's far better than I expected. Great performance and great functionality.
It's funny that I never really had a problem with the noise the Xbox made while playing a game. After installing Fable 2 to the hard drive I noticed how much nicer it is to play without the noise of the disc spinning. I'll probably install every game I want to play from now on. :)

The free "Day the Earth Stood Still" theme looks alright.
So apart from that glitch mentioned earlier, does the Party mode work well? ... I noticed several small groups on my list last night. Did any of you test leaping from one game to another? ... Did your group remain together?

The Fulham Blockbuster said the price was £89.99. Think I'll keep my eyes open for some christmas/Jan bargains before getting a hard drive. I'd rather buy two games than buy more storage.

Quick question but are there any advantages (apart from the HDMI capacity) with getting the xbox Elite to replace my current one (it's fairly old so I'm guessing it's one of the early core models)?
The 'disc save' ability and the increasing amount of Live content is making me wonder if the 20Gb (really ~12Gb of free space) drive and old model I've got is worth replacing with the more recent Elite.

you can;t go back to the old dash, I always use the Friends list in the Miniguide
It has to be done via the mini-dash IIRC (i.e. pressing the big green X/guide button).
Open dash guide, scroll left to games, click on achievements find your games with 0 gamerscore and there will be an option to delete game history by pressing X

The only way to achieve this would be by digitally signing the game to just run on the HD it was installed on or such, and then cannot be played on another system without the original owner alowing so, or just do i once off install like more and more PC games are doing with the 5 strikes and out idea, this would cut down on the 2nd hand market, which would only please developers
Still got the same problem of the screen stretching when doing certain things, like editing Profile.
Anyone any ideas ?

To be fair the current system is fine and prevents piracy while still allowing the second hand market (which the majority of players want). Sure it's a bit of a hassle to swap discs but that's what everyone's been doing for years so it's hardly an effort.
The stupid 5 installs and other ideas currently used in the PC market tend to backfire and peeve off players rather than appease them.
Yeah agreed, would of been nice if you could install just the MP section of games, as this it what most people go back to in games over a period of time after they have completed them

how easy is it to do? unless my amp is on watching HDDVD's is just annoying, will be out of the 3yr warranty soon so would consider opeing it up...
It's a pretty easy process, there's plenty of guides out there on opening the console, and swapping the fan is just a case of unpluging the power connector and popping it out then putting the new one in

I dont see on what ground MS could ban you from live for upgrading components, as long as they not breaking any licensing rights, ie modding the system to play backups or cheat on live???

I don't think there's ever been any real cases of this happening is there? I know a couple of guys who have replaced their fans and still use live so they're either lucky or reports of people getting banned are more down to the fact that they may have flashed their drives :shrug:

Does anyone know how to get WMP player to reflect the change of a file name? For example I have just changed a load of file names in my video folder but when I look on the 360 the file names still stay the same?

I have a problem with my Tiger Woods 09 where I get an unreadable disc error everytime I try to play on Bay Hill (also got the error when attempting a copy to hard drive) if I borrowed a copy and installed that on the HD would I be able to boot it up with my own disc in the tray or is there some other copy protection in place?
Would save me having to get the disc either replaced or repaired.

I'm pretty certain it does. I was messing around with installs and upon starting each game as per usual it seemed to automatically go to the install as my drive was lovely and quiet.

The new dashboard is awesome (albeit it did lock up my Xbox initially but it seems stable now). The Avatars are brilliant and so are the Party options. The dashboard now feels very communal like people on a gaming network are right in your living room with you! Loving the direction MS took.

I decided to download one of the premium themes to see what they are like. Picked the Call of Duty theme and the images are just colour variations of the same picture. But now your friends are stood next to AA guns, tanks, aircraft and the games themselves are on what looks like dog tags.

I think the dark shadow also shows when they are not on your friends list. As there was a group together of my friends (i presume in a party chat) but one of them was a shadow with the name xxxx or ?????.

Yep, there are four new themes for NXE, a new Xbox 360, Spectrum, Day and another variation called Night (which is the one they've previewed with the cityscape).

If you don't have many friends online the new dashboard Friends section works well but once it reaches a certain number online it is better to use the guide button and look at the list instead.
In theory the customisation of avatars is a good idea. But the theme you choose means that your Friends backgrounds are more a reflection of you rather than them. It would probably have taken up too much memory/resources to have it so that you could customise not only your avatar but your space as well. But aside from your avatars (which will soon get old) everything else is just a visual representation of what is already on the easier to use list.
I still like it though because at least you still have the option to use the list.

Installing the entire game to the hard drive is so useful, got about 3 games on there. The new dash is lot smoother than the clunky old blades system but they need to make some of the graphics semi-transparent to see the themes.
The avatars are still crap, can't even get rid of it, the new friends list is poor (I know you can use the mini-dash)
iirc MS can change the dash without system updates, hopefully they improve the new dash

I had two 2100 Lips MS points cards turn up today from Tesco but it says neither of the codes are valid. Anyone had this happen before and I take it it's Microsoft (rather than Tesco) that'll sort this out?
That happened to me ages ago. Turns out there was a duff batch that got released without the codes being activated. There was quite a few people affected iirc.
Try browsing the xbox forums to see if others are in the same boat. Hopefully MS will notice.

The content is linked to your live ID and the FIRST* console it is downloaded to so you can download and play the content on any console you are signed in to. And anyone can play the content on the FIRST console.
You can change the ID of the FIRST console yourself using the DRM tool on xbox.com, but only once per year, otherwise you have to phone up to get it done.
So if you have 2 360s you can download to one, sign in to the other an redownload and then if your friend/mrs/mr uses the 1st xbox you can play together.

Am I the only one who keeps loading the game in the drive when I turn the thing on instead of signing in? :D
Getting used to it, and liking it in general, but I still find the mini-dash the most used screen.

How do you redeem codes on the new marketplace, can't find it?
Find something you want to buy and then the option to redeem a code is selectable in the menu after you choose it.

You can now redeem codes in the quick mini-quide (big X button), which I thought was really useful.

When something appears onscreen your natural instinct is to press "A"... that's how most games start, press A several times to stop the intro advertising and rolling demo. Tiger Woods 09 fires up and you press start followed by A to skip the demo... a window pops up and you hit A again... trying to get to the menu. Unfortunately the last press of "A" was to cancel connecting to EA servers for the online integrated part of the game. If I could have 50p for every time I've screamed ARGHHHHHH!, I'd be a rich man.
I understand your annoyance Lou. I'll be accidentally starting the game in the drive anytime soon! :(

Depends on what genre of games you usually enjoy really.
Those 2 games alone will give you LOTS of gameplay in both single player and online.
And yes, the xbox is far from the quietest console out there...though the newer ones are better than they used to be :)

If you've got Live - Left 4 Dead, COD4, COD5, Fifa09.
Dead Rising, can be a marmite game however!, but i thought it was the best game ive played in a long time

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but since the new dash, is anyones achievements popping up when you get them?
Started Fallout 3 and didn't think I had gotten one achievement until I just checked xbox.com.

you stil getting friends popping up when they come online? if not, check your Notification settings

Yeah, friends still popping up but not one achievement on Fallout 3, unless the promo copy I'm playing has some way it stops them from showing?
I wish there was a way to make it run a game from the hard disk by default if it is installed.
Also wish you could have achievement notifications on and friend notifications off, for when you want to enjoy a game uninterrupted.

It does. If it's installed it won't play from the DVD.
Also wish you could have achievement notifications on and friend notifications off, for when you want to enjoy a game uninterrupted

Yeh you can turn them off.
Nothing worse than being so close to an achievment you can smell it, and some ass hat comes online and you get excited thinking you have done it and added to your xbox penis points when you aint...
Is there any way to fully download trailers before watching them?
I tried watching the trailer for The Day The Earth Stood Still but it'd download a bit, play a bit...download a bit more, play a bit more... & so on. Gave up in the end :shrug:

All other notifications (like "sign-ins") turned OFF - because if you've got a large friends list, it's distracting & irritating seeing them log-on all the time. However as it currently stands, turn off notifications and you miss their sign-ins as well as direct contact like invites - which is NO GOOD.

Ok I think you need to turn the xbox off full stop and not just notifications :lol:

Should just use WPA on the router instead - easier passcode, more secure and less hassle ;)

Any idea why they changed the sound effect for achievements/friends logging in etc. ?? Sounds like its out of tune now.

mines been doing the same, I just rebooted the router, then it got stuck at dns and gave what appeared to be the banned status code! restarted again and it eventually started.
I think I need to get a new router.

Hmmm... I don't seem to be getting any notifications at all. Where is the option, I couldn't find it.
On the NXE, hit the Guide button, cycle all the way right to the "settings" blade, and notifications is the 2nd option in the list. I think from there you can check boxes like in the old dashboard for whether you see pop-ups during movies, etc.
