Well, the latest players which are recommended come from Sony and Panasonic.

There are basically two standards - the 'normal' version or one which has onboard decoding for the high definition audio formats - depending on whether your AV amp has HD audio decoders or not. [this is an oversimplification BTW]

If you don't have an AV amp, then just stick with the 'budget' one.

The models are Sony BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 or Panasonic BD35 or BD55.

The cheaper Sony in particular seems to be discounted in a lot of places [only out at beginning of September] and can be made multiregion [for DVD's] via a firmware hack [see separate thread about this also in the Playback Forum]

All Blu-Ray players have an HDMI connection.

Possibly the best deal at the moment is for the Sony S350 at £200 to incude 6 [decent] blu-ray discs at Blockbuster http://www.thedvdforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=526566 although the player on it's own could have been had for as little as £129 a few weeks ago.

HTH :)
