I have had my Xperia for a few weeks now and thought i would post some impressions.

I am going to say this phone is not for everybody. I wanted an Iphone esque phone but with a keyboard and the functions i have become use to on my phone such as radio.

Before this is had a Samsung f700 which i was not keen on and an XDA Mini S which i loved.

First i am going to talk about the styling and design.

As you have no doubt seen from the pictures, the phone has a large 3" touchscreen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. To me the screen is crisp and is what i would call hi def for a phone, it looks that good. The phone also features a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone also features a full slide out QWERTY keyboard, handy for the net and typing emails and texts. The keyboard also arcs slightly to give the optimum viewing angle.

The front of the phone features 8 small face buttons, that i never use, apart from to answer calls and finish them. I find this easier than useing the touchscreen to accept and end calls.

On the side of the phone you have a volume button and a quick camera button (just like the cybershot cameraphones).

The phone also has a small trackpad that makes browsing the net a dream and is why i like the phone so much. This trackpad is a cross between a laptop mousepad and a button. It makes navigating the net very easy. The phone comes with 2 browsers Internet explorer is clunky and slow. Opera on the other hand is great. It features tabs, full page browsing almost everything you would expect to see on a full computer it is simple but packs everything in.

I have found the looks to be extremely stylish (i have the black one) and would say it even beats the IPhone on looks, but i think its personal preference.

One of the selling points to the Xperia is its panel system. This is accessed by pressing one of the face buttons, and gives you quick access to a front screen, depending on what you want to do. This bypasses the deep and sometimes hard to locate what you want interface of windows mobile for everyday applications such as radio, callender, google search, media player.

Being use to windows mobile, i have not used this feature much but more custom made panels are on the way for all sorts of things, i feel this will fast become a valuable tool. It reminds me of a sleeker version of Nintendos channels system on Wii.

But i guess what you want to know is how it stands up to everyday tasks.

The phone has an easy to access communications manager, meaning you can quickly disable or enable features such as wifi, bluetooth, or even turning off phone communications (flight mode i guess).

I decided not to take an internet package when signing upto the contract and the phones wifi has been more than enough. Its quick to find and connect to networks and seams to have a much better range than my Nintendo DS, which has to be practicly on top of the router to find it. With this i can quite happy surf the net in the bath, or quickly google something without having to turn on my laptop. If the phone loses wifi it will automaticly conect to 3G HSDPA or GPRS depending on coverage. However the phone does tell you it is doing this and gives you the option to cancel.

Texting is a deam due to the windows mobile 6.1 software and the physical keyboard. It employs a similar interface as the Iphone. It lays out communications in chat windows so you can see and scroll previous texts from that user.

While only 3.2 mega pixels, the camera boasts a lot of features and very good picture quality. From what i can see it boasts all the features of the cybershot phones such as face detection.

The call interface is simple to use you can easily increase or decrease the volume, toggle between speaker phone and ear phone and the quality of the calls is good, much better than my pervious Samsung phone.

Overall i am impressed with the sleek looks, the improvements to Windows mobile since version 5 are vast. The software responds better to my actions and is much faster than it was on on XDA Mini S.

The phone takes micro SD upto 32GB i got a 4GB one on ebay for a fiver all in which does the trick nicely. The phone has half a gig internal memory of which about 350mb is available.

A seling point for me was the office mobile suite which helped me during uni on my XDA Mini. Its easy to write notes or ideas if you have anything then sync them with a document on your PC or laptop. It was handy for my dissertation, as i was getting ideas and arguements at weird times and places. It will be a handy feature to have again, which i missed on my last phone.

The phone also features a dedicated streaming media player which is a great addition and works flawlessly.

The phone has roughly 20 days standby, yes 20 days. Well thats what the bumf says with the phone. 10 hours of full useage thats bluetooth, wifi, videos ect, all going which is more than enough i think.

The high price point maybe a turn off for most, £600 sim free. Though it can be had on some good (but lengthy contracts) for free. My contact with Vodafone is £30.01 a month for 24 months 500 mins unlimited texts, Vodafone family and passport (worth £10).

Overall if your looking for an Iphone type experience but don't want an Iphone, this could be the phone for you.

Sony appear to be giving this phone a lot of support, though with it being new and their first smartphone next to nothing from them is available yet (just a few extra panels).

Any questions or anything you would like to know, i will keep an eye on this topic, and will do my best to answer them.

Not sure if you have used the iphone but would you say the web browsing experience on the X1 is better than the iphone?

I returned the iphone after having to zoom in all the time to read stuff on the iphone whilst browsing.

How does this compare?

Well on Opera you get the whole page view.

This means if you have good eye sight you do not have to zoom in. Once you zoom in it stays zoomed in till you change webpage when it then goes back to the zoomed out view. This is for easy page naviagtion, for me it works very well.

Internet Explorer maybe more your thing, its a lot slower then Opera but it adopts an always zoomed in view. This is not to bad as you have the little naviagtion pad to scan round the page quite quickly.

It seams like they have included both to give variety, som like the whole page view so will like Opera (like me) and some don't and will like I.E mobile.

sounds interesting Bananaman.

torn between this, the TouchHD, maybe an Iphone.

had an xda mini so pretty similar to the Sony setup.

the lack of Office (or similar) on the iphone is a bit of pain, everything else apart from the camera is very good.

the nokia 5800 looked promising but not available till xmas now it seems.

Hi newbie owner here, I have some questions if anyone can help.

1. Can I get proper sat nav on this so i get the map and arrows and voice on loudspeaker telling me where to turn etc, like tom tom? If so where can I get it from cheap please.

2. Can you assign your own text message alert as long as its in wav format.

3. Where can I get the voice command software thats the right type for the X1 and can it do anything.

4. Wheres the best place to get a memory card for it thats fast with no lag, is this class6 I need yes?

5. Do you need screen protectors with this?

6. Besides voice command and tom tom is there any other essential applications or software for this.

7. When texting can I get a mobile keyboard screen layout to appear that has the 3 letters per key layout rather then the keyboard style.

8. To get all applications and stuff on my phone I presume I just connect the the cable that comes with the phone itself.

9. Anyone managed to sync the phone to a bluetooth car stereo so hands free works via the cars speakers.

10. Anything else I should know, do, buy, download to it etc thanks.

11. Can you use msn messenger or skype on this?

12. Can you upload photos you take direct to your facebook account from the phone when out and about )not via a lead and the pc)

At the moment I press envelope on screen and go through some options, its a pain. It gives me sms/mms and email options, cant I get straight to text inbox, also the way it displays text is wierd too, anyone changed it?

Also is anyone elses speaker not really loud, I have it set to loud but even on loudspeaker its quiter then my LG's normal speaker mode, I cant here it?

Brad - TomTom is no longer available as a standalone package for phones as of version 7. Somebody leaked the binaries for v7 which were taken from a HTC handset but obviously it's not legit (although arguably if you purchase the maps you have still bought the software).

The alternative is Sygic McGuider (www.sygic.com or www.teleatlas.com). This is a product which is become more mature as time goes by, and given I had no choice but to use this on my Nokia N95 (as TomTom is discontinued on that too) I have grown to love it.

The package you buy allows you to run the software on a Windows Mobile handset, Symbian (S3 and UIQ) and also a PC so it's excellent value for money (running Syqic under Windows XP on a laptop with a GPS receiver has to be the ultimate sat-nav!).

Realtime traffic is not yet available (it is coming) and if you want to use TomTom POI's (speed camera warnings and such like), you need to convert them using a free tool from Sygic.

Bananaman seemed to think texting was pretty easy...
Perhaps you have not found the proper texting features or the way windows mobile deals with it you dont like which would be fair enough...

I dont wanna us ethe keyboard though to text or stylus. Besides its not just that its the navigation to get to the point were you input the text, my old phones have been aclick away, this is a fair few clicks.

To me texting should be quick and easy, this makes it fiddly.

Cant you can customise the "panels" so that you have a "shortcut" to the texting?

It sounds like you have had enough it though so if its really a bother then it's probably best to send it back...

Has a facebook panel, Spb Mobile Shell (That looks like it has texting shorcut on it) and a Windows Live Panel (for messenger, hotmail etc)

Also what sat nav do I need for this?

If you can get hold of Tomtom software that would be good or failing that http://www.mcguider.com/.

I prefer Tomtom as I think it has better navigation options and runs faster on my N95.
Unfortunately tomtom no longer do satnav for mobiles.

Version 7 of McGuider is out now and is catching up fast with TomTom (given that Sygic is owned by Teleatlas and Teleatlas/TomTom are the same company, Sygic could the new TomTom for the mobile platform).

I didn't like Sygic at all when I first tried it (about 12 months ago) but it has recently caught up with TomTom in terms of functionality and now I think all it's missing is realtime traffic (my other bugbear used to be instructions being given too early but this seems to have been fixed).

TomTom on the N95 is almost unusable - the autorotate feature of the N95 makes TomTom's screen corrupt with the only way to resolve exiting the application, there is also no support for the internal GPS chip (without a workaround which no longer works on v30 firmware) plus the maps are well out of date - and given the latest TomTom devices changed their mapping engine, there is no chance the maps on the Symbian version will be updated.

Brad - as above, if you can get hold of the TomTom 7 installer and then purchase your maps, I can't really see a problem. If not, give McGuider a try, it's on offer at the moment for £59.95 at www.mcguider.com.

(Sygic are the Russian developers, McGuider is the product name and the whole thing is licensed/owned by Teleatlas - confusing but new updates are being put out through www.mcguider.com).

OK after using this phone yesterday out and about im afraid its going back, bloody awful. Not good for people with big fingers, the general use is awful too, so its going back. I presume all windows based smart phones are going to behave like this yes? I mean the way they work and system, menu, process etc?

So I now need a phone that can let me use msn messenger, skype, upload photos direct to facebook and update status etc and has sat nav, any reccommendations thanks.

Well its going back, after my first full day out in the field using it, awful, everything takes ages to do, my fingers are too big for the touch screen and the whole experience is fiddly, the phone has a mind of its own. I presume all windows based smart phones are like this yes?

So I now need a phone that has sat nav, can use msn messenger, skype and upload photos and status on facebook, any ideas? Maybe the N85?

Symbian-based Smartphone?

Nav : McGuider / Older versions of TomTom / Route66 / CoPilot Live
MSN : Done! (Official MS client plus many 3rd party tools)
Skype : Fring (http://www.fring.com) (Fring also does MSN and VoIP as well as ICQ)
Facebook : Google throws up this S60 client for Facebook - think it's official (http://www.nokiasymbianthemes.com/free-mobile-applications/facebook-for-mobile-application-download)

EDIT : The new firmware on the N95 also has one-click access to Flickr to upload and view photo's - I guess newer handsets will also have this feature.

I'm considering the T-Mobile G1 which is Android based. Seems to be pretty responsive and finger friendly unlike the Windows Mobile phones I've had in the past although some may not like the design.

The £30 a month tariff with 700 minutes is too much for me, I don't talk that much, but he local T-Mobile shop can do the phone for just under £50 and then £20 a month for 100min/texts and "unlimited" web and walk data. Seems like a good deal.
