I usually buy games online, but after seeing that Game were offering more for trade-in's this weekend for Call of Duty WOW I decided to pop in.

Me: Excuse me, How much to trade in PES 2009 for Call Of Duty?
Game: let me see (tap...tap...tap) £24.99 for trade in, COD is 37.99 so it will cost £12.99
Game: Sorry to sound cheeky but do GAME Price Match? as I noticed COD was currently £27 in Asda.

Despite asking quite innocently and just checking if they had price match, the guy suddenly became quite confrontational, Patronising and talking quite loudly over me.

Game: Whenever Supermarket's advertise cheap games, they only get 10 which sell out instantly so you will never get a new game in a supermarket. The whole thing is a trick to get you in store and spend £50 on food. They actually make a loss on the game knowing you will buy other items in store. This process is called Loss Making .......yadda yadda yadda.

Me: I am sure they do think this way but there's nothing to stop you just buying the game is there?
Game: I'm telling you they won't have any in stock and we do not price match anyway.
Me: They had some in stock this morning (he was ********* me off now lol)
Game Well you are in our store now!!!!!

I walked in being so polite and suddenly felt quite violated lol
A sensible man would have took his business elsewhere but the fact I was getting £24.99 for PES which Ironically I brought from ASDA on release day for £27 and I was getting COD for £12.99, I decided to purchase and go on my way.

I think I will stick to buying online, and selling old games on Ebay from now on  Rant Over:lol:

They were well within his rights to refuse you and I'm sure his reasoning was valid, there's never an excuse to be rude though.

I think by giving in you only made his attitude appear acceptable - after all he got a sale!

I'd have walked straight out of there.

You should have given him the Lynx effect.

I dont see anything particularly wrong with what he said. While a simple No may of sufficied, at least he gave you a reason.

And because they answer the same crap x1000 times from chancers from MSE who then offer to pay in 2p coins they've saved up from eating out of date bread for the last 3 years.

End of the day, a lot of people whinge on about prices in shops, as somewhere is offering it cheaper, but its out of stock. You cant sell fresh air though*

*Well unless you're a really good con merchant.

I don't get why the guy felt the need to turn it into a tapdance though.

It's not so much what was said it was more how I was spoken to.
All I said was "Do you Price Match Asda?"
I cannot stress the tone and how confrontational of how he was.

Maybe I'm a little old school, but even if he had heard this question 100 times before that day, if you are working in a customer service enviroment and should be nice. I wasnt asking in a snotty way, more like speaking to a mate in a pub. i.e Excuse me mate, do you know if ......

That said If I was a man of such high principles I would have walked out so can't complain can I? lol

Just felt like a rant to make me feel better hehe

Well whilst I kind of agree with some of what he said, it's easy to price X game for £5-10 cheaper than everywhere else when you're out of stock of it & Argos/Supermarkets do it more than most, I don't think he should have ranted at you the way he did!

I've not bought anything from Game for a long time. I have a gift card (from games I traded in ages ago), but I can never bring myself to spend in there because they're prices are stupidly high and I just end up buying online.

I hate Game, Gamestation is way better.

If I'd been in the OP's shoes then I'd have walked out the shop, no question (if only for the "you're in our shop now" line).

I order stock of games etc for the largest supermarket and can catagorically state, we get enough stock in to satisfy as much demand as we can.
We are reliant on suppliers who sometimes let us down, but we never order only 10 so we can claim to sell it cheap with the intent to sell out quickly.

However, we do price down to pull in people on loss leaders.
e.g. petrol, deli counters etc do not make any money and run at a loss, but they pull people in who spend in other areas of the store.

At the end of the day why is he trying to make you feel sorry for game with the whole 'boo hoo we can't compete with supermarkets crap'. I don't know many other stores that get to sell the same item 2 or 3 times to different people making a nice slice each time.

The main business model of game is to convince consumers to trade in last months game or console for a new (overpriced) game which they can then sell on at a huge profit. Can't stand the places myself, I know it's convenient but you get a much fairer price on ebay or the classifieds on boards like this. You don't have to pay £39.99 for every new release then either, with discounts online most games can be picked up for £30ish or you can take advantage of the supermarket specials of late.

Saying that I buy all my new releases from their website, shocking customer service if you ever need to contact them, but the games arrive before release and are usually the cheapest price in town once you know the score with discounts, coupons etc.... makes me a hypocrite too I guess :(

Maybe if Game didn't have 5 people serving, which usually consists of one on the till, and the other 4 playing Nintendo Wii tennis, then they could cut their prices a bit.

To be fair there's normally one in ours looming around the place asking if you need any help every few minutes....

Game work, as if your parents or GF go into town, were will they buy games ?

Game of course, Gamestation smells. Supermarkets will be taken the trade, but for passing sales game will rule the 2nd hand market. As joe public find it easier esp the pre 16 year old kids who are happy with 4 quid for the 20 old titles the trade in
