My trusty Pioneer 626-D is on the verge of being sold so that i can finally get round to watching the SVCDs i've got, but i want to get something that i'm not going to have to swap out again when i upgrade my crappy projector, i.e. progressive scan.

Any suggestions on what player i should go for? I can't seem to find that many UK/modded players that actually have progressive scan outputs. Something cheap-ish, but decent. I've heard too that Pioneer prog scan is not very good either, what's the story?

The two I know of are the Tosh SD-500 and SD-900, but Progressive Scan and cheapish do not go together I'm afraid.

The SD-500 is £499.00 and the SD-900 £999.00

is this > http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-toshiba-sd-510e-510-multi-region-dvd-player.html < an upgrade to the Tosh SD-500 then? Looks to me like what i want, and £375 ish, not the £500 i was fearing...

I've read all the reports about Techtronics too, but that's where i originally got my 626-D from, and they were nothing but quick and helpful with me.

I only linked Techtronics in the frst place tho because they're the only site i know that'll tell you what connections are on the back of the players. Anyone else know any others that do that?

look here for info on a new player

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/news/frame.html?http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displaynews.php?id=1452

the previous lecson model could be multi region via the handset, it had the odd problem with certain discs but a free firmware upgrade disc cured the problem.

I have emailed Debenhams to ask about availability when they reply I let you know.

So potentialy we could have multi region player with progressive scan and component outputs for £200 .

Yeah, i saw that too, that would be the sensible option when they become available.

Now i have a projector i have been told a progressive scan dvd player will further improve the quality of the picture, i have sa few questions if anyone can help.

1. Is this a good dvd player for £249 with progressive scan.DVD player (http://www.hifibitz.net/warehouse/details.asp?ProductID=PHIDVDQ50)

2. Will its picture and sound quality be as good as my 15 months old Toshiba SD100E player.

3. Will having a DVD player with progressive scan improve the picture quality of my projector.

Thanks for your help.

The philips seems a good player for the money but I have not seen it in action.

from what I have read progressive scan only comes into play with r1 material as at the moment for some reason r2 films cant utilise progressive scan .

Also check if the player has component outs as this is the best way to conect a dvd player to a projector, the next is rgb, the next is svhs and the poorest is composite ie the connectors you get with the panny are are composite the worst leads to use to connect to the panny, I believe thats the leads your are using at the moment brad so the first thing to do would be to change the conectors. Idealy you should use the compenent conectors, but even using svhs will improve the picture.

progressive scan is only available through component, so the philips has to have component out if it is progressive.

at the moment the dvd player is connected to my projector with an s video lead so what does a component lead look like, i take it the tosh sd100e doesnt have a component out socket??

So i need a DVD player with component out then, and which socket on the panasonic does this go to as its go a video, s video and phone socket. Oh and a pin like adapter thats the same as from the back of a pc.

Component leads are a set of 3 phono plugs, coloured Red Green and Blue, and they plug into the Panny on the right (left in Tim's picture below), the three vertical inputs labelled Y, PbCb, PrCr

I have not seen a component lead but i think they are just phono type connectors at each end

yea ive seen em thanks for the help, so now i just need a dvd player with these same sockets (compenant out) and that does progressive scan and I simply connect the 2 pieces of equipment and hey presto better image. Will i notice the difference between the picture quality from my tosh via s video and a new dvd player with progressive scan sent through a component connection.

just got this reply back from debenhams about the lecson dvd1000 which has progressive scan & component outputs.

Dear Sir or Madam

Thank you for your recent enquiry. After speaking to our buying department
on your behalf, I can confirm that the Lecson DVD -1000 will be exclusively
stocked by Debenhams. Hopefully, it will be available to customers in our
stores for the begining of March and will retail at £199

so we just need to if it can be made multi region via the handset like the previous model

Yes the lecson is progressive scan with component outputs. According to the press release I've seen it also has lots of audio upgrades and even a headphone output. Looks like a steal at the price.
It is about 3 weeks away and apparently there is a remote hack for multi-region.
I'll post it here as soon as I can get it from my friends.
