Well here we are again...
West brom Saturday...And hopefully the return of Torres, who we're starting to miss.
Although Kuyt has stepped up manfully.
Time for a new thread and if that ones goes the same way as this one then action including banning discussions regarding certain teams will be added to the rules of this forum.

Kuyt was gash on Tuesday. It's pretty scary we had to bring the rookie Ngog on to try and rescue the game the other night.lack of goals could cost us.let's hope Torres clicks straight back into form.
I find Kuyt seems to do better when he's up front than on the wing.
If he has to beat a man he's stuffed. But he does wonder into the box if the ball is on the other wing.
But he's honest and is happy to play for us, which sometimes is worth more than a stroppy fancy dan.

not really surprising though is it, as he was a striker when you bought him.

Keane needs to start showing more and quickly.he's really struggling at the moment.
N'Gog needs to just keep the hell away from the first XI - he looks woefully short of the quality needed. He doesn't seem to have any physical attributes that we can mould into a top draw player. Another striker in January is just a must whether its Heskey, Owen etc but we badly need reinforcing there. We'll end up recalling Voronin at this rate :D

It's a bit hard to judge him though as he's had no time in the team...
He looked ok in pre-season...But Rafa needs to give him more game time. Carling cup is soon, so maybe we may see more of him, Pacheco and Nemeth...
Or perhaps he needs to loan them out to get first team experience.
I've honestly not seen anything remotely promising about him - doesn't seem to have any pace, skill, physical ability, height or anything that makes me think he should be in the first XI. Normally I'm fully prepared to give players a chance before deciding on them but he just does nothing for me at all. Looks like he should be come off the bench for a relegation side rather than our 4th choice striker behind Babel, Torres and Keane.
At least someone like Nemeth looks the business in some form but he doesn't get anywhere near the first team ahead of N'Gog :(

Pacheco and Nemeth...
Memeth is injured and Pacheco has been poor for the ressies this season.in fact the reserve team in general has been poor, last 3 games lost.apparently a number of the squad are unhappy they weren't considered for the Crew game.

It's definitely a good sign that Rafa has been pushing for a new contract for months now, even though his existing deal already keeps him here until June 2010.

Well I'd want a new contract sorted sharpish too if the business I worked for was getting new owners soon! If they wanna bring in their own big man then I'd be stuffed.
Still great news for us though, I can't express how much respect I have for Rafa. I was thinking of getting his Max and Paddy beard tattoo'ed on my face to get the message across.
Anyway, I've got a feeling we're going to do West Brom severely tomorrow. The amount of chances we've created the past month has been scary, and with our golden haired boy-god back in the team we're due to plunder a hatful! Can't wait!! :D

But he's contracted for at least another season anyway - long after G+H will, allegedly, have sold up.
And then there is a train of thought that suggests any new owner would be mad, publicity and "not immediately ******* off all the fans" wise, to get rid of Rafa.

I hope you're right ... but I'd happily take any sort of win as well ;)
At least it's a late kick-off which means I don't have to be up at the crack of dawn to get to the game like usual :)

Looking good at the Emirates.
Well we need to win today now to keep a nice gap ahead of Arsenal and Man U...
We don't get all 3 points today and we don't deserve to be anywhere near the top.
Reina, Arbeloa, Aurelio, Agger, Carragher, Mascherano, Gerrard, Kuyt, Benayoun, Riera, Keane.
Subs: Cavalieri, Hyypia, Torres, Alonso, Babel, Insua, El Zhar.
Thought Torres might be on the bench - midweek against Spurs in the CC will be an ideal game for him to start to get his fitness.
Ngog didn't impress rafa during the week then ;)?
Should be a win today lets hope we can put some chances away today. It would be good for Keane to break his premiership duck.
Robbie gets his first goal.

Why did we ever think Scott Carson was great ? or it down to dodgy defences in West Brom and Charlton ?
Nice comfortable win that - great to see Keane on the scoresheet and a nice finish from Arbeloa to get some nice fantasy league points :D
Bloody Arbeloa
I had my IKTS banker on us to win 2-0

Yeah, nice easy win that. Probably the ideal game for us after the last week (the defeat and then the fortunate draw!) Good to see keane off the mark in the league. Hopefully he can start putting a few more in. I'd like to see him, Torres and Kuyt all up front on teams we should be beating. I'd rather see us finish games off sooner, and risking letting in the odd goal shouldn't be too much of a concern with the quality we have.
Hopefully we'll take the smile off Harry's face on Wednesday! :)
lets hope Ince can do one for us tomorrow.
Keano
his names not ****in keano... robbie keane... robbie keane :D
glad he got a double hope he settles down now and just lets instinct take over.
maybe they worked all week on the training ground for how they could help keane... i didnt see him once with his back to goal flat footed with his hand up like he has been for most of the games this season. i'm delighted for um.
not beothered about wednesday tbh... hope we play the young team and just get it over with... we want to focus on the PL.

Carling Cup is there on a plate - Torres needs the start along with the likes of Babel and Hyypia. I wonder if Degen is fit yet as he may have to play with Arbeloa's imminent 1 game suspension.

Does anyone know what happens to the West Ham game if we get through on Wednesday ?? Will it get postponed, or brought forward like the Everton game will be if we're still in the Carling Cup then as well ?
As for today's (or should that be yesterday's) game ... I didn't think we are anywhere near our best today - very slow to get started. Chuffed for Keane to get 2 but if I was him I would be well ****** off to be taken off (again !!!) when I had a chance of a hattrick. And how the hell did Benayoun stay on for the full 90 ??!!??
I wonder if Degen is fit yet as he may have to play with Arbeloa's imminent 1 game suspension.
He was on the bench on Tuesday so he should be.
Whatever happens to the West Ham game, please don't let it be our game in hand for the next 6 months. I think I would kill myself. :help:

Might not have been the greatest game last night, but it was good to get back to winning ways, and better to see Keane finally get off the mark in the Prem with us.
I guess Torres will be given a run in the Carling game to help him get back to match fitness, but I don't want to see any other main-11 risked.
AdamBrunt

Carling Cup is there on a plate
Depending on what sort of team we & Spurs put out on Wednesday ... the big 4 could well make up half the teams in the quarter finals. With a lucky draw we could miss all of them whilst 2 of them are drawn together ... but I wouldn't say it was there on a plate.
I can also see Spurs putting out a very strong team - being holders and all.
I guess Torres will be given a run in the Carling game to help him get back to match fitness, but I don't want to see any other main-11 risked.
The mate I go to the games with hopes we get knocked out either on Wednesday or the last 8 as he doesn't want to miss the derby - which he will unless we go out.

yip i felt sorry for him getting taken off when he still had nearly 20 mins to maybe get a hatrick. it would have given him that extra boost/probably fulfilled a life long ambition too! maybe rafa is still hacked off that he tried to show boat rather than finish the job in madrid :)
definitely do not want torres risked for a bloody CC game! put the kids out, get bossed and let spurs continue to think 'arrys the messiah.
I would rather put a mix of kids and reserves out to get a good run in the competition and get some experience so they are ready to step up!

definitely do not want torres risked for a bloody CC game!
I can still remember sitting in the Reading home end last year watching as Torres lay on ground after 2 minutes - thinking he was not going to get up !!! - and then watching as he got kicked all over the park for the rest of the match and yet he still scored a brilliant hattrick.
However, injury can happen anywhen. Who's to say that if he doesn't play on Wednesday he won't do his hamstring again at Bolton anyway ?
I think it's a tough call as to what Rafa is going to do. A fully fit Torres didn't start against Crewe (but did play the final 30 mins when we were already winning). It could be argued that being out for 6 weeks, Torres needs to get competitive minutes under his belt ASAP - but as you say, it is only the Carling Cup.
definitely do not want torres risked for a bloody CC game! put the kids out, get bossed and let spurs continue to think 'arrys the messiah.
He needs match practice - Spurs ain't going to be hacking away at him anyway.
I agree to an extent - but i really do want to see some our young talent get some games.
Keano
Just seen this. He gave an interview saying he did NOT want to be referred to as that, because it was the nickname given to Roy keane, the dirty Manu player.
He must be as childish as some of the Liverpool fans who agree with him on this. What's wrong with chanting Keano?
He's Irish and when he plays for Ireland he is called Keano (and when he played for Spurs he was called Keano). I am Irish and in Ireland anyone with the surname Keane automatically becomes Keano (even old women), so I will continue to call him Keano if you don't mind.
I don't mind at all mate.
Lets just hope he doesn't have the same mates as Carra's though - or you're be appearing in his inevitable autobiography

but if your at any games soon and he scores try to refrain the keano chant... when he scored against PSV i got caught up in it and joined in with the keano chanting that the area of the kop i was in started... which received a healthy amount of hisses and scorn. i learned my lesson.

think its a bit premature from keane :

ok so he got a double in a game against the team tipped for the relegation battle... when he scores in three games on the spin or something then he can say his goal drought woud end. he will look silly if he goes back in to headless chicken mode for the next few games.

That's surprising. Midweek game, live on Sky, unlikely to be a lot of the first team playing and Spurs IIRC charging £35+ for a ticket !!!

Progressing wouldn't do us any harm, certainly for another round at least [ and maybe that'll bring the West Ham game forward as well - so I don't miss it ;) ]
Rafa's comments about Gerrard needing a rest (in the papers this morning) would suggest that he has little chance of playing tomorrow.

Its all conjecture again though - no hard facts to back it up with as per usual with newspapers. Just some 'expert' who is trying to guess what the situation is behind the scenes.

As john316 says its all conjecture on the paper's part - especially the claim that we will have to sell Torres and Babel. After all, why sell Babel ? If we're desperate for money we'd sell Gerrard before Babel surely.
And if the worst comes to the worst, they'll just take the Sheikh's offer which is still on the table.
Independent reporting it as well (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/banks-could-force-sale-of-vulnerable-liverpool-1012153.html)
I don't think there will be any need to sell players but I doubt those two will be able to stay around much longer.

when did I say that ??
Of course everything is not hunky dory but to suggest that we'll be selling Torres/Babel/anyone anytime soon is pure nonsense and lazy journalism.
Worst case scenario ... G+H forfeit the club to the bank who then sell it to the highest bidder. Before it even gets to that stage though, IMO, G+H would have sold up of their own accord.
AdamBrunt
12-11-2008, 12:01
why haven't they taken it yet? The stories about their financial difficulties appeared not long after they took over the club.
Because, quite simply, (a) they still believe they'll be able to refinance the deal in January (which is all they need to do) and (b) they (and Hicks in particular) still think the club is worth more than what the Sheikh is offering (allegedly £500M).
If Oliver Kay is to believed, they only recently (within the last week) turned down 1 offer to sell so, if that's true, they are definitely looking to sell.
so you believe one journalist over another? Or do you speak to G&H regularly?

But the banks lending G+H the money have been in trouble for months.
Anyway ... regarding tonight's game, I see Benoit Assou-Ekotto can not play due to suspension (presumably for his red card on Sunday). Does this mean Arbeloa can serve his suspension tonight as well or do 5 yellows work differently to 1 red ?

Frankly Spurs have wanted it more. And to any Spurs fan who can read and is gloating about the score when u r joint top of the league and in the champs league still maybe then u can gloat. But yeah well done Spurs your first team is doing well against our monkeys.

Ok then, how would u have put the first half? Instead of criticizing sir. We played badly Spurs were the better side and they deserved their lead. But we are playing our reserves. Maybe i didn't put it in the best way. But hows about u throw your hat in the ring and say how u feel instead of being a baby about it!

Dire in the first half but we get ourselves back into it and with 20 mins to go and 2 goals down you prepare yourself for the penalty that gets it back to 1 goal and then you realise .... that useless **** Mike Riley is the ref  And that it no way takes anything away from how poor we were.
I did love Alan Smith and his "these Liverpool players are pushing for a starting place" type comments, fully aware that Rafa will make at least NINE changes, to the team that finished tonight, for the game on Saturday.
No disrepect but if I was a Spurs fan, I would be celebrating that injury to Gomez - he is an utter liability.

Sorry bout earlier mate. I agree but surely our reserves should do better. They didnt look bothered, the easy thing to say would be look at Arsenal, but its true their youngsters look at those games and use them to impress the manager. They give their all to impress. But our players didnt look bothered, we did improve, just a shame that all our spending hasnt given us more depth when we need to rest and rotate!

Yeah he does feature alot but he doesnt seem to me to be first team quality. I dunno its just that because of the money and reputation he had i expected more from him. Maybe he needs more time, when we bought him i had heard of him and that he was close to knocking his way into in the Italian team, i havent seen any of that so far. But in his defense the first few times i saw Evra play he was shocking! Now look at him. Maybe Dossena needs time to settle.

To be fair, Arsenal harp on about their "kids" every year, but had shut up since the 5-1 mauling.......no doubt they'll come out with the same old crap if we play them again this year.
Wasn't a good night for your lot, but expected them to put up more than they did - they just didn't seem to compete, and had no beef to them. Been a while since a team made us look that good, which must be a bit of a concern for you (especially if any of your best players get injured) :D Having said that, there were a few fringe squad players in our team as well tonight, so gotta say I'm chuffed.

Agger played OK but he was covering for 3 other defenders tonight. At one stage he did the keepers job.
We had one regular starter from the last few weeks ...(Agger) and one regular starter that came on...(Alonso)
Torres is coming back from 6 weeks out and had a good run out.
Rafa has avoided his usual trick of half first team starters, half dross and shown that he is finally taking the League seriously. That was a statement of intent tonight...and he didn't even pick a strong bench.
He is doing what we've been begging for...and that's taking the League seriously.
Granted that second string was crap and I would have liked to see more youth, but deep down I'm glad he's resting the team.
So long as we win in 2 and a half days time...he's done the right thing. An away day at Bolton isn't the easiest game and the fact that 3/4 of the first team are at home is fine in my book.

The point Deron I think is making ... it arguably mattered more to Spurs as it probably your best chance of silverware this season [ though you may just sneak the UEFA Cup ;) ].
No disrepect, but unlike Spurs, Liverpool have far far bigger fish to fry.
Although I can see your point, I wouldn't be surprised to see Spurs finishing fifth, and maybe even challenging for fourth this season, even after their start.

When we started with Lucas and Plessis in the centre was it any wonder we couldn't create anything, or even keep the ball  Plessis is a decent defensive midfielder for the future, but I still don't see what Rafa sees in Lucas, and it was a stark contrast when Xabi came on. Also, did anyone else think it was a bit disappointing to give Torres a run out but not pick anyone that could give him decent service, and then to bring Xabi on after he'd been replaced
Amongst a lot of pretty poor displays I'd say Babel was the most disappointing, he's supposed to be pressing for a first team start but after a couple of early moments he just disappeared :(
Shame Nemeth's injured because I think he'd have offered a lot more than <s>N'Onymous</s> N'Gog.
However, it galls a tad when people belittle our win with talk of 2nd strings, when in reality it wasn't our strongest team either :)
I wasn't belittling your win...
Far from it, I was making the statement that Rafa is finally doing what we've been desperate for him to do and that's taking the league seriously.
We basically had 3 starters involved today...
Agger, Alonso and Torres when back to full fitness. We're desperate to keep our league run going and Rafa hasn't tinkered too much with the core team.
What's annoying is Scholari has done virtually the same...Mourhino used to play very strong teams in this cup.

I don't think the idea of playing Torres was to increase his goal scoring tally ... he needs competitive minutes on the pitch after a month out of the game. If Torres had been playing for the last month, then he wouldn't have played tonight.

What's the point in "competitive" minutes if all he's doing is running around and chasing down the odd 50-50 ball  It would've been better for his "match sharpness" if he'd had a few half chances or been able to get on the end of a couple of crosses, he'd probably get better match practice on the training ground than he did tonight.

Yeah, I know it's the lowest priority, but I was disappointed he put out a team like that, and disappointed with the result, as it's the easiest piece of silverware to win. The first half we were dreadful, and apart from a spell in the second half Spurs were worth the win. The team that got knocked out at Chelsea last year doesn't really back up your comments.
It's pretty much identical to last night in terms of the use of squad players/first team.
What I don't get is where are all these foreign youngsters we have bought over the past few seasons?
Last nights team was the usual reserve dross. If Rafa wasn't bothered about losing why not give a run out to some of the decent youth players?

The Chelsea cup game came after 2 league defeats and was in the xmas run up (19 Dec) when everyone plays loads of games...

"If the team goes to Bolton and wins, we'll still be top of the table and everyone will be talking about our priorities," added the Spaniard.
"We're disappointed because I want to win every game. We had a lot of quality in that team and wanted to win. But you have to think about priorities."

FWIW I understood what Adam meant. Clearly he wasn't suggesting celebrating an injury, more suggesting that Spurs fans might be celebrating the fact that their rubbish keeper may miss a few games as it'll probably improve their performances.
No doubt, he did word it badly, especially in an internet forum where everything is taken literally.

hopefully thats the storm moved out of that teacup and the toys have been picked up and put safely back in the pram.
badly worded by adam but he isnt a 'vicous type forum poster' from what i have read of his on here.
tough 3 points to get at the reebok on satdy. hopefully we can keep the pressure on them tho.
if diddy drogba coin chuck gets taken further could he get a match ban that could be taken account into the PL or would it be just a fine?

According to cheeseypuffs, Carragher got a "3 game ban" red card when he did exactly the same thing.
And yes, a red card received in the Carling Cup does 'carry over' to the Premiership (and vice versa).
but Carragher got a red card during the game. The ref only gave Drogba a yellow.
He will probably get a 3 game ban from the FA anyway just for the FA to show face.

That's what I mean ... cheeseypuffs was saying Carra got the red card for throwing the coin, Drogba only got a yellow for doing the same thing.

Yep, Carra got a red card for throwing the coin and the resulting ban. Since the ref saw it and took action in booking Drogba that should be the end of it, but knowing the FA they will go against their own rule and impose a ban :suspect:
AdamBrunt

IMO if Carra got a 3 match ban for something then every other player should get the same punishment for doing it as well ... regardless of what action the ref took.

Carra got a 3 match ban as it was a straight red card.
At the end of the day the Ref gave Drogba a yellow card as he saw fit. That should be the end of it.
Stupid thing to do but he apologised. A weeks wages fine which is then donated to a victims of coin throwing charity or something, end of.

Which bit of this are you not getting ?
Carra throws a coin into the crowd and gets a 3 match ban.
Drogba throws a coin into the crowd and gets a yellow card (effectively nothing).
That's fair and consistent is it ?

Carra threw a coin into the crowd and the ref sent him off, straight red which is an automatic 3 match ban.
Drogba threw a coin into the crowd and the ref gave him a yellow card.
Carra's 3 match ban was a result of the RED card.
Doesn't really matter if it's fair and consistent that's how it goes. Ref's make decisions which you don't agree with in every game.
I don't know why we are debating this, Carraghers coin throwing incident was 6 years ago.

13-11-2008, 13:47
What bit aren't you getting? The ref's saw both incidents. One gave a red and one gave a yellow. The FA say they won't take retrospective action if the ref punishes at the time. Therefore nothing else should happen to Drogba.
It might not be fair or consistent but then when has it ever been?

Is the guy who the coin at drogba going to get a ban?
cheeseypuffs

That's the big question, whoever did should get a lifetime ban but they'll probably say it's too much hassle to go through all the footage :nono:
AdamBrunt
13-11-2008, 16:30
Did they ever find the person who threw the coin at Carragher ?
I seem to remember them going through the motions "they'll be banned for life ... we'll go through all the CCTV to find them ... etc" but don't remember anything coming of it.

The guy who originally throws it gets a lifetime ban but most people seem to be content for Drogba to just escape with a yellow card?
Doesn't seem right to me
Of course I'm not defending the pillock who threw it from the crowd but when it boils down to it Drogba has committed the same 'crime' by reacting and throwing it back.

The Echo were pretty scathing on last night's performance, especially Degen who the reporter stated was so far out of his depth he needed armbands  think Carragher will shift to right back saturday with Hyppia & Agger in the centre,Aurelio on the left.

Put Gerrard back there...
;)
He was ace at right back. Carra can go back to left back...
Awesome.
We'd rarely concede with that mob at the back...and Gerrard could play his 60 yard passes he loves so much...
We'd rarely score either ;)
Despite our success this season it looks like we still need decent fullbacks. I doubt we will be buying anyone in January though (unless the Owen rumours are true).
Full back is just the weirdest position in football for me - you never like spending money on them but a really crap full back totally undermines your whole defence. That left back slot for us is just a black hole position that nobody seems capable of locking down :(

Personally I think the problem is at times Dossena, for example, is being encouraged to get forward (ie play as a wing-back) but the team is playing a 4-4-2 formation whereby Dossena should be playing as a full back.
If we are going to persist with 'wing-backs' in a 4-4-2 formation then Aurelio/Dossena and whoever is playing LM have to learn to cover each other.
saltysam

Dossena's defending the other night was nothing to do with him going forward.it was just plain amateurish.

Suggestion in the Echo that Darby will get a run out this weekend. I hope so, really rated him last year and in the pre season games he played.
Dossena was just awful, didn't seem to have a clue. I was prepared to give him time to settle and adjust, be he actually seems to be getting worse, not better.

Aurelio Hyypia Agger Carragher
tomorrow.

team
Reina, Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, Aurelio, Gerrard, Mascherano, Riera, Kuyt, Alonso, Keane. Subs: Cavalieri, Darby, Lucas, Babel, Torres, Dossena, Benayoun.

That's not a bad team at all really and should be able to win the game.
No surprise that Darby doesn't start - was never very likely, but surprised Sami played the whole 90 mins on Wednesday and then plays today.
Bolton away is not the sort of game for Torres to start IMO (and certainly not a 'not fully fit' Torres). The next 3 games all at home (Fulham, Marseille and West Ham) are all more suited to him.
Wouldn't surprise me if the complete lack of effort from Torres the other night didn't do him any favours in Rafa's eyes.

Not like anyone else gave much of a toss that night.
I just hope it's down to him not being fully fit, and not for "tactical" reasons.
Not got English commentary...
Is Gerrard being man marked?
Bloody 'ell nice move...unlucky Kuyt
Patient piece of play sucking them out, then a nice cross and header by Kuyt. Looking very comfortable.

And that through ball he just had...His lack of pace showed there.

Keane!!!

Carragher might not like being Right Back but boy he sends some good crosses in!!

I don't think it's lucky when one of their players is deliberately trying to trip our keeper. It's just a foul
Yep...
That's definitely a warning about set pieces...
There were 3 Bolton players crowding Reina when that went in. He needs more protection to stop them getting to him.
We need to score another one...Hate when we're only a goal up and dominating.

Gardner falling
Blimey did Agger just lose a tooth...?
We're in a right battle now. This is why keane's miss may come back to haunt us.
Gardner's pace is causing us no end of grief.
You just know Carragher and Alonso were just discussing Alsono putting the ball out for Aurelio's injury. Carragher weren't happy...
Stevie G
15-11-2008, 12:59
They're getting about this half. We need to take control back, get that second
God Dammit...
Now Gerrard's missed one...Harder than Keane's one though.
And Styles is reverting back to form...that looked a corner for Bolton...
Stevie G

Jesus, that was as bad a miss as Keane's. Hope we don't rue these misses :(
Bolton have knocked us out of our stride...
Riera has had no decent ball this half. We're no longer passing it, just lumping it up there and getting drawn into their game.
Torres = God!

Not as much as Davies did to Aurelio...
I'd take Riera off and bring on the more physical Babel...
For our bad misses at least there's Gardner to even them out...
No wait Lucas swings it back in our favour...

Ah...
Get it now. The bottom 10 are in the relegation zone...
;)
Chelsea have that extra inevitibility that we seem to lack. We're fine when on top, but we still give teams the opportunity to get back at us.
Although the defence were throwing themselves in front of everything today.
How many misses (from both teams) were there in that game, they could have their own miss of the season competition from the chances in this match alone.
lol...why did Adam's name pop into my head...
1534: GOAL Fulham 1-0 Tottenham
A howler from Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes. Simon Davies strikes at goal, the ball glances off the head of Jonathan Woodgate and the Spurs keeper somehow allows the ball to slip through his hands.

I did have a wry smile when I read that earlier.
Didn't think we were that good today but played well enough to win. Both goals were superbly taken but some of the misses . Though I don't agree with Gray's comments about "would those kind of misses cost them against tougher opposition" ... erm, it didn't seem to against Chelsea and Man U ;)
And Rob Styles actually gets a decision correct for once :)
Chelsea battering West Brom :(

Either way, the goal difference last season didn't prove crucial, but it was so tight at one stage that it had to be a psycological advantage.
