Tut..
This is supposedly just a re-release of the PK range with an updated chassis (and they always got rave reviews for picture quality). In any case, you'd think that a £650 TV bought from a reputable firm would be relatively free of problems wouldn't you?.
Sadly, this obviously isn't so and I've got a distnctly unimpressive TV in my house right now (and TBH I'm a bit confused). Net research led me to believe it was a decent performer and it looked good in the showroom. I should have requested to view some DVD's before actually buying one, but my impatience (and trust of other peoples remarks) seemed enough of a spur at the time.
So why is the set garbage IMO?. Firsty, the picture quality from the tuner is very average and has a lot of noticeable edge noise. I think the set employs some kind of 'enhancement' technique which can make diagonal lines look jagged (peoples noses look like lego if they're stood infront of a light background). I hate scan-lines on NTSC material, so you can imagine how disgruntled I am that I've got to put up with similar nasties on PAL discs aswell. Also, the extreme right of the image is a bit blurred and I think the geometry leaves a lot to be desired too.
Believe it or not, I would be willing to live with all of the above flaws if the RGB performance was okay, but that's the most damning thing of all. Simply put, RGB can't be used at all because it's plagued with problems. Faint vertical bands, frequent instances of patterning and a general lack of sharpness to the image (everything not at the forefront is comparitively blurry). I've belatedly read comments on other forums which mention similar things, although the most annoying thing is that these flaws are too intermittent and vague to properly explain to a salesperson. In fairness, S-VHS playback is pretty good, although I don't really appreciate it (because I know that a trouble-free RGB image would be better).
So that's my tale of woe. I hope for the sake of others that the RGB flaws aren't too widespread (although I have seen an increase in negative remarks just lately). I thought I'd better post this to warn off anyone thinking of buying one and maybe get some feedback.
Can anyone answer any of the following...
How can I return the set when these flaws are so slight/irregular and so difficult to convey?
Can it be fixed or remedied some other way?
How many people have the same problems, but dont mention them (and how many of those people work for What Video/Tv & Hi-Fi?!)..
