I am thinking about picking up a PS3 and am unsure what model to go for. Whilst the games look ok for downloads on the 160GB I am not too fussed about them, the main reason for buying it is solely for the bigger hard drive. I know it's easy to change the HD yourself but I don't want to do this whilst the machine is in warranty.

Is 80GB enough space when you start installing games onto the machine. Am I right in saying it's roughly 6GB install per game? What happens if you delete that, does it delete your game saves etc?

Also, is there any difference in the heat or noise produced from these two versions? The quieter and cooler the better :)

Cheers guys!

Depends if all you're going to do is use if for gaming or not. I was recently thinking of buying the PS3 mainly as a blu-ray player but was veering towards the larger HD because I'm attracted to the idea of using it as a media centre as well.

Upgrading the HD does not affect your warranty. There are instructions on how to upgrade in the manual that comes with the console.

I've had my PS3 for almost a year, have plenty of downloaded PSN games and Burnout on the HDD and it seems fine, I have the 40GB version btw. I've also installed plenty of games, haven't needed to delete anything yet

Go for the cheaper one and install a bigger HD yourself if you need it.
Downloads can be re-downloaded at a later date, they will appear in your purchases record. For game saves, you can back them up to an external pen-drive if required but not really worth it as they are generally a small size.

I'd agree with Jim, the extra you pay for the 160gb drive is almost as much as picking a 320gb drive to stick in. Get it swapped asap then you don't have the um and ahh'ing I have now I have a fullish drive that I can't be bothered to backup/swap so I'll keep going till I have no choice. Don't make my mistake.

Another vote for 60gb here. I use mine for games and as a media centre. If you have a pc then get twonky so you can stream all your media over your home network to the PS3..
