Just got an email from Under 18 telling me of their anniversary and deciding on a new name change. They are to be known as Splash DVD (http://www.splashdvd.com/splash/search.cfm) - nothing on the exisitng U18 website that relates to this change yet but it must be imminent.

It's odd that it doesn't mention Under18 anywhere in that email.

Idle Child
02-02-2002, 16:46
well, it has the sender's adress as:

al@under18.org.uk

anyone fear the security in having what must be ALL of under18's customer's e-mails in one long forward...??

ive used U18 once b4

Henry

You've to enter your CC details everytime.

Just placed an order on the new site and everything seemed to be working fine. The order confirmation email is still coming from the address: sales@under18.org.uk

Always felt under18 sounded like some dodgy pedophile site. Splash is a bit better.

They should have gone for somthing snappy like dvd shopper or perhaps not. :)

Ahh so that’s who they are. I wonder why they never mentioned their original name in the e-mail.

Well

Anyone want to start up a new DVD store as we've got a bigish list of email addresses who like to buy dvds

Why is this? Are they bored of sickos looking at their site hiping for other stuff?

(i am a customer of U18)

When i was first given the url of under18 i was very suspicous of the site.

Could the name change be that they want to sell items over £18.

kcxdev
02-02-2002, 19:09
or maybe someone offered to buy the domain to set up 'some other' site

I have not received this email either.

Has it been confirmed by U18 as either a breach of security or a definate rebrand?

Have you tried www.under18.co.uk ?
It starts out looking like it's a porn site, but when you click on the links they are just normal photos. Weird!!

Well if it is fake, then it is the best fake DVD site I have ever seen!

I ment someone using Under18's email system to send out a mass mail.

Are we 100% sure SplashDVD is related to Under18?

What's this referral program about then. When you click on the link you just get the sign up form. There is no info on it at all. Is it a loyalty scheme or a refer a friend?

Anyone annoyed at the way Under18 sent the email to everyone using Carbon Copy rather than Blind Carbon Copy.

One hour after I received the email from under 18 I started to get SPAM from other sites.

I have already replied expressing my anger at being bulk mailed with my email address showing.

I gave them my contact details with the understanding that they would not be made available to others.

:(

I'm not exactly sure about the scheme that the URL points to either. What is the referral code thing that they ask for?

It is legit. We kept getting confused with a porn site. Henc the name change.

I think an apology for having us all spammed to death would be in order.

Just got the following e-mail...

Dear Customer,

We have noticed that the email that was sent out to you yesterday afternoon contained the email addresses of other customers. We apologise for this situation and can assure you that this will never happen again. The reason this happened was due to a misconfiguration in our recently acquired mailing program.

Our apologies again,

Regards,

Alaistair Jerrom-Smith

Doesn't change the fact I'll probably never use them again. Completly unproffesional IMHO, even this e-mail goes no-where to explain what's going on and if the sites arn't referencing each other whats going on? Is it a name change or one company running under 2 different names?

kcxdev
03-02-2002, 13:43
I got the apology email as well, but I never got the splash email, weird. Probably a good thing though

it does say in their first mail its a name change, maybe they'll keep U18 running till the word goes round completely. Would be nice if they were more clear about it though

It is now mentioned on the Under18 website.

Same here, apology but not splash mail

like 8-], i've sent them a reply to their "apology" letter. Still not happy my e-mail given away, unknowingly or otherwise..

to me it looked like "alaistair" just opened up his address book, or clicked on "send to all" all something. mindless to say the least.

Unlike a few here, i use Under18 frequently (along with Play) and i'm not impressed with this hic-cup.

Well I will not be ordering from them again.

The subject line made it look like a lame copy of the 'I Love You' Virus.

03-02-2002, 15:34
I must admit I thought the mail was a virus as well so I never even opened to see that my mail address was revealed to everyone else. However, I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt since they have apologised and its good to have another 'tax free' supplier to keep play competitive.

After reading that under18.org were doing the Woody Allen dvds at £7.49 I was going to cancel my orders at play.com.

However, after reading about this fiasco I think I'd rather pay the extra 50p.

I got spam within hours of them revealing my e-mail address to the world. I have e-mailed them and told them that I'm not happy and that I wont be using them anymore.

Fortunately I give each web retailer a unique e-mail address so I can simply block this address now to avoid further spam.

Idiots.

I got spammed by Yonathon Gal, who I believe is a member of these forums  Anyone else get this?

I also got spammed by someone using that name, don't know if they got my address from the under18 email or these forums, or even if it is the same person as the forum member.

Lex Luthor
05-02-2002, 09:46
Yep, I got spammed by this Yonathon bloke (The 900th Dimension was the name of his turgid little web offering).

I know it was from the Under18 fiasco because I give each web retailer a unique e-mail address which contains the retailers name so that I can trace the origin of any spam I get. The spam from Mr Gal was sent to my Under 18 e-mail address.

After checking the whois details for Splash DVDs I got the following e-mail address:

al@under18.org.uk

which is for our favourtie person Alaistair Jerrom-Smith, the guy who decided it would be cool to share all our e-mail adresses with everybody else.

Will be dropping him a curt e-mail shortly, can I suggest you all do the same?

stephen
05-02-2002, 10:14
The spammer does seem to be the same as the forum member:

Surely under18 , splash or whatever they call themselves next need to do more than apologise

Didn't get the email spam from the forum member but would have thought he would have known better:rolleyes:
