I'm not worried about extras - just good picture quality. I've got the original R1 release but really want an anamorphic presentation.

The region comparison page shows a R4 release but I can't find it anywhere

Well, I have the R2 French - Ultimate Edition - version (as part of the 5 disc set with T2: UE).

No complaints with picture quality - can't compare it with anything else. It's anamorphic and generally is a fine presentation (better than what I've heard about the R1 SE at least).

Sound quality is good, not great, but I cannot comment as I do not have a surround setup.

In terms of extras you get the 30 minute (retrospective) documentary from the R1 SE - "Imagining Total Recall" I believe it's called; another 10 minute featurette (EPK fluff - english); a trailer (in english); Storyboard to film comparison (in english); filmographies (in french - easy to understand though); a photo gallery and 2 more documentaries in French (one about Philip K. Dick and his effect on the film industry - quite interesting and about 13mins. long and the other a 20+ minute doc. on the make up in the film - not so good).

The menus are very good (in French) and there is an easter egg to find (a trivia game in french).

I would think this is the best overall package if you do not mind missing out on the Arnie/Verhoeven commentary.

The R4 is bare bones and contains a major audio glitch.

Isn't there a new R1 special edition out now ?

there's only the SE (anamorphic), plain (not anamorphic) and Total Recall 2070 on R1.

The SE is quite good, and I have no qualms with the picture quality, I think it's fine. The Verhoeven/Schwarzenegger commentary is quite entertaining, IMO.

The complete one and only season of Total Recall 2070 is out in Japan and is now OOP but there is a chance Amazon.co.jp has some or will locate some. It'll run you $198 dollars for just 4 DVDs of 20 episodes, the most expensive season I have next to Dark Angel (also from Japan), but it's rare and the quality is great!
