View Full Version : Visible scan lines with NTSC playback?

Hi my first post :)

When playing back NTSC discs I find that I can see faint black between each picture line that aren't visible when playing back PAL discs. I assume it is the TV that causes this when it switches to 60hz. Is there anything that can be done about it, and are some TVs better than others?

Welcom to the forums.

From what I understand you to be saying, this is not connected to the 60Hz conversion. It is due to PAL having a greater line resolution 625 against NTSC (550 or something).

You will particularly notice these lines on non anamorphic NTSC DVDs. Most PAL and anamorphic NTSC DVDs have sufficent resolution that they either can't be seen or have to be looked for.

Sit further back from the TV.

Hello Mongoman - In your NTSC collection, do you have any non-macrovision dvds (HK DVDs, older american releases, Anchor Bay titles, most anime titles etc.)

I used to have a similar sounding problem, until I found out that it was caused by NTSC macrovision titles. All other NTSC titles played fine. Having disabled the macrovision on the DVD player lifted my problem. May be something to look into.

Very expensive solution...

Buy a Sony set with a DRC 50 mode (I have a KV36FS70). This effectively doubles the resolution of the screen and the lines disappear. I can't even see them on a zoomed, non-anamorphic picture.

However, prepare to be set back about £2k.

Thanks for the replies :)

Purpledump : I don't have any non-Macrovision discs to test. I am however getting a new DVD player next week and that should have Macrovision disabled, I'll see if it improves any after that.

andrew_lee : I've just been looking at the specs for that TV, I have to say that it looks very nice. I just wish I had the money to get one.
