Play says it is, but they're not always reliable. Does anyone know for sure if this disc has RCE?

Thanks.

Update: It does NOT have RCE. Plays perfectly on my Toshiba 100E.

I have this, but don't know how to check for RCE. If you tell me how I'll check for you :)

Thanks Spider. I think the only way to test it would be to play it on a machine that can't handle RCE (e.g. Toshibas). What player do you have?

I have a Toshiba 210 myself and it plays fine, but I'm fairly sure this player is capable of playing RCE discs. :)

This is annoying. My Toshiba 100E definitely has trouble with RCE. Anyway, is the film any good? (Tell me it isn't!) :)

Not answering the question, but what a difference in specs:

R1: Director's Commentary
Director and Cast Commentary
The Making-of The Princess and the Warrior
Deleted Scenes
Music Video
Filmographies
Weblink to the Film's Website
Theatrical Trailers

R2: Original Theatrical Trailer
Interactive Menu
Scene Access

Anyone know of any reviews of either disk or the film itself? Having loved Run Lola Run I'm interested in getting it.

Click here (http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/resultat.php3?search=princess+and+the+warrior&land=%25&fras=1&ok=go&region=1) for links to 5 reviews of the R1 disc. I haven't found any for the R2 version yet.

... and apparently the R2 only has the English Dub according to the few specs I've seen on various retailers sites.

...of course, for those of you who know German, there is the generously-endowed, two-disc German DVD release - which features a dts soundtrack in addition to a DD 5.1 soundtrack ... but it's all German, down to the optional subtitles - no English anywhere...

...already announced for release on DVD by the end of August: Tom Tykwer's realization of Heaven - scripted by Krzysztof Kieslowski - this English-language movie will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this week, and will go on general release in Germany at the end of February...

Thanks for that - all the info I need!

I have the R2 version. Contrary to the post above it has the original german dub with english sub-titles. It may also have an English dub, I didn't check - and who would ;).

A cracking film.

The R2 Run Lola Run also has an English dub - the security guard obviously based his accent on Benny Hill - it's worth watching (briefly) for its awfulness!

So are these really the only 'extras' on the R2 version?

oops, that'll teach me to listen to Play and MVC.
I have heard rumours of an alternative ending, is there anything like that on the R2?

Yep, its only got a trailer.

So does NOBODY know if it's RCE? :(

SimonI
09-02-2002, 10:24
Well, I decided to order a copy... as I don't have any RCE disks at present, I can't tell if my player (Panasonic A360) plays RCE or not - any way I'll let you know once I get the disk.

Henry
11-02-2002, 21:28
Thanks Simon. But if it plays fine then I still wouldn't know the answer...

SimonI

I'm sure Play used to have a page which listed which players did and did not play RCE disks - can't find it now so I guess they have removed it.

Have you seen this page on DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html) - it may help? It lists a workaround for Toshiba 100.

Henry

I know about the workaround, so playing the film is not a real problem. Watching the extras would be a bit of a nightmare though unless I know the exact title/chapter numbers.

SimonI
17-02-2002, 10:39
Well, I got the disk and it plays ok in my machine - sorry, but I guess that doesn't really help you much, Henry.

There is no indication of RCE anywhere on the packaging or disk - anyone know if known RCE disks show a logo anywhere?

Henry
17-02-2002, 11:54
Thanks Simon. I'm going to order it anyway as I can always play the extras on another player even if the disc has RCE.

bah

normally i like to bash the french for this, now lets bash the germans ;-)

/rant
give us english subtitles on your lovely special editions u selfish gits!
/end rant

I'll buy the r1 and if i love it i'll get the german dts version aswell- for me its not a language problem (german is my first language) but i always end up lending out / watching a film with people and they need a bit of help in translation ;-)

dms

oh

and the imdb claims the aspect ratio of the film is 1:2.35 as does amazon.de

whilst play / dvdboxoffice state 1:1.85

are we (r1) getting a cropped version? i haven't seen anyone mention that

Henry
24-02-2002, 11:49
The IMDB also says the film was shot using the Super 35 process, which means it was matted to give a theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. So there should be more picture information (at the top and bottom) even if it's a 1.85:1 transfer.

SimonI
24-02-2002, 13:17
The box on the R1 states 2.35:1 and it certainly looks that on playback.

just got round to watching my copy of said film

thought it was absolutely wonderful ;-) really cheered me up.

I dont know if people think the drive to france sequence was corny (i'm never normally a fan of the "oh get over it" sequences") but i thought it worked a treat.

didnt think much of the quality of the r1 transfer though - next to no detail when you zoom in.

This was annoying because although i guess its obvious her friend is in france (no its not a plot spoiler ;-) the titles make it clear it was filmed in sunny cornwall - and i couldnt read any of the details of the letters or signs when zooming in (although the big yellow post box with postes or whatever written on gave it away for the fool inside of me ;-)

anyways - i really recommend it to anyone with a bit of patience and who wants an odd little love story.

(and it certainly lets you walk away easier than "million dollar hotel" whoops spoiler ;-)

Mine arrived this morning and I'm glad to report that it does NOT have RCE.
