Hello

saw this in todays sun newspaper, but did not get a model number (maybe 900)

specs were...

8.9" screen
Webcam
16Gb memory
1Gb ram
WiFi

all for £199

I thought that was a good price - but you boys will sharp tell me if Im wrong :)

Yes, it's the 900.

Great bargain if you can live with the poor battery life. I have one and bought a bigger battery for about £30.

Great little machine - but the 901 is not much more expensive.

What is the battery life like Ono?

With the stock 4400mAh cell it sucks. About 2 hours max.
With the 5800mAh it can do about 5 hours but it does stick out the back.

I take the extended with me now on my commute.

I've got a 900 with the 5800mAh and it is the same size as the stock 4400.
Asus swapped it for £10.

The 901 has better battery life, but since I have 2 official batteries, it doesn't really bother me, as I get approx 3.5 hours on a full charge.
I prefer the smaller size of the 900.

It's perfect.

Oh, I didn't realise the swap deal had been approved. Did you just ciontact an approved dealer or Asus directly?

Amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001CA7RXK/thedvdforums-21) have it for £198.97, that's a saving of 3p so not really a bargain.

Looking to get something like this for my son at Christmas. Who did you contact to get the battery swapped for £10

I contacted Asus at the end of July and they emailed me an RMA number.

I sent the battery back with RMA number, and then they contacted me for a card payment of £10.

Battery was sent to me in August.

The 900 has an unresolved issue with the battery running down when switched off. Asus have a cheek still selling these knowing there is a fault.

The battery swap offer ended long ago.

these are great little computers, we beta tested them at work, and yes there is a battery issue, but they won't swap them now, you need to buy another one i think. still good machines, but can see them coming down in price again before xmas

Not a lot of good if each time you want to use it the battery is flat.

Personally I would spend the extra £70 and go with a Dell Inspiron Mini 9.

Personally I would spend the extra ~£1000 and go with a Mac Book Air. But thats mostly because the tiny keyboard does my head in.

If these figures are correct the 4400mAh unit was faulty.

The increase should be around 40 mins from 2hrs.

Or, to put it another way, if the 5800 unit gives 5hrs the 440 one should give ~3hrs 48mins.

I use mine every day, so it isn't an issue for me.
I've read on a EeePC forum that if you don't use it for a 10 days or so, it can go from fully charged to fully drained. You have to disconnect the battery when it isn't in use to stop the discharge.

Battery issue aside, it is still a great unit.
Because of it's size and weight, I take it with me to work, use it around the house and take it on holiday all the time.

Every netbook introduced since EeePC 701/900 is heavier and larger in size, and more like a notebook, which to me are not what I want or need.

I bought an extra 5800 battery before I got my original 4400 battery swapped.

Top contender for the most compromised full size notebook ever made.

Personally I would spend the extra £70 and go with a Dell Inspiron Mini 9.

Not seen the Dell before. Does it have any advantages over the Aspire One which is £200 in Tesco?

A lot less than 10 days even with the 5800mAh.

The dell has a much faster CPU.

I bought the Dell just to try because we have a business account and I was shocked at just how good it was. For me it blows all the other mini laptops out the water for performance, size, usability, battery life and all those other important mini laptop traits.

The dell has a much faster CPU.

It appears to have exactly the same 1.6GHz Atom that the Aspire One does? (which is actually quite a bit slower than the 900MHz Celeron in the Eee PC). The only significant difference I can see is the LED screen on the Dell, I've not seen one so couldn't say if it's worth the extra £70 though hopefully it will give some power saving. The Dell doesn't appear to have the SDHC port that the Acer has for expanding the solid state drive (you can double storage to 16GB for around a tenner).

I've read that the Dell DOES have an SDHC port.

I did think it would be a bit of a stupid omission, I just couldn't find it in the Dell technical specs.

Doesn't the Acer have 2? One for expanding the onboard memory and one which is more like a day to day removeable card..?

nigel_williams
15-10-2008, 22:52
Yes, the Aspire One does have 2 slots. For the memory expansion slot, the card goes all the way in so it is flush with the case.

The Dell has a standard 3-in-1 memory card interface, that at least is mentioned in the specs.

One thing I will say for the Dell is that it's far better designed for upgrading compared to the Acer, everything is easily accessible from a panel on the bottom. Still, you can get the 120GB hard drive version of the Acer for £248 at Tesco's, so the LED screen on the Dell would have to be pretty special to tempt me, need to see one really.

HP2133 is even better at £350 plus vat...

But the dell one is good for the money...

Well if the LED screen is anything like the one on my XPS M1330 then it damn well is worth every penny to pay the extra 70 odd quid, believe me when you get used to the LED screen you won't want to go back to LCD screens.

The LED screen on my XPS 1330 is just simply gorgeous.:luv::)

As I have said before (and having used both) the Dell is superior, and worth the extra any day of the week.

Got my Dell Mini from Vodafone at the weekend. Really like it. Fast enough for my needs. Was using the Vodafone mobile broadband connection while out and about earlier and got a 2Mbps connection which was pretty good.
Screen is really sharp and the build quality feels great. Only down side is the 8GB SSD which is nearly full, but I've installed an 8GB SD card in the slot and am using that for storage of my stuff and extra programs.

Right, but it appears the only way in which it's superior (spec wise) is the screen. I was going to get the Acer as it seems to have the best specs for the price, but I'd like to see the Dell to decide if the screen is worth the extra £70 odd. However, being a Dell I suppose none of the high street shops sell it, which makes this difficult?

Could you confirm the Dell has an SDHC slot in addition to the standard media card reader slots?

pob
19-10-2008, 23:08
The slot on the side of the Dell takes SD-HC - I'm using an 8GB card in mine at the moment. It isn't an extra slot, there is just one slot which takes SD/SDHC and Memory Stick (I think)

Now that Vodafone have started selling these, you may be able to see one in a Vodafone shop, although I know that stocks are limited at the moment.

There is a slim chance that PC World (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=7) may have them as they have started selling Dell (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=3) stuff.

Cheers

Phil

I saw a Dell one in Vodafone near Covent Garden Tube on Saturday (long Acre). Worked really well. If I could get built in 3G on 3 then I would think about geting one. Battery life seems beter on other models though.
