Hi all,
So I turned my 360 off last night and heard a horrible whirring / grinding sound.
Turned it back on, ejected the disc to see it has a horrible circular scratch around it:

I tried loading the game back up and got this totally bizzare error message:

Very upsetting :cry::doh:
Anyways, I just wondered if anyone know of any things I can try to repair the disc?
I bought it from Tesco's and have lost the receipt annoyingly.
I tried polishing with toothpaste, and that just seemed to scratch it more, however it did load the game as a far as ronaldinho's face but then an XBOX error message appears saying 'clean disc with soft cloth' etc.
Thanks all

Probably worth taking it back to Tescos to see if they'll replace it without the receipt. They usually seem pretty good with stuff like that.

Cheers for reply m8- Worth a try, but won't they just say "er.. you've scratched the disc?"
Also do you know if EA replace discs - not an ideal solution but if I can't do anything else. I can't find any mention of them doing it on the UK site that's all.

The disc isn't the problem though, it's the console. You can't expect them to deal with consequential loss. It's like taking a glass back for a refund because you dropped it. They probably won't replace it anyway as they will just say that you scratched it
Last time I had a 360 that did that, it went completely tits up and required a new drive in it.
Same happened to me when I first got a 360 and cod4. Altho it was my fault, how was I to know you dont move them when they are upright. Sounded like a fan hitting something inside. the disc had a few errors on the multiplayer but I have to keep cleaning it and it seems to work.

I know the disc isn't the problem.
However disc's can get scratched any number of ways. The fact my xbox did it is irrelavent (but very annoying).
So that aside, I was looking for advice on how to deal with a scratched disc. Short of this I'll just need to buy it again.
Cheers

You can get the disc skimmed, either through buying a kit or taking it to Gamestation who can do it for you, which removes a layer of the disc to see if it can get rid of the scratch. Looking at yours it may be too deep to do anything about it though.

You can get those disk doctor machines, but I have no idea if they work or not.

Blockbuster do the disc skimming thing as well..

Excellent, cheers bapapapa - just gave my local one a call. Worth a shot at £2 I reckon :)
Gamestation also offer a disk cleaning service, 3 quid a go.
I had to put my Oblivion disk though it twice though to get the scratch off made by my 360.
So make sure you have at least 6 or 12 pound on you.
I know you've tried it with toothpaste, but have a go with some Mr Sheen...you never know

Bear in mind that if your xbox wasn't being moved when it did this, there is a good chance it will happen again. Might be worth giving Microsoft a call.

Belter! Blockbuster did it for £2.
Needed a couple of goes in the machine but only charged once.
Looks good as new. Very impressed.
Thanks for the suggestion :)

Excellent. :)
My brother's CoD4 disc got scratched in the same way (it still works just has audio issues) so I'll let him know about this.

I find ejecting the disc before shutting down the 360 helps avoid disc scratching. Whenever I have forgotten to do so the disc becomes unreadable and cleaning is required.

what a ridiculous piece of hardware :)

I've never taken a disc out when I've shut off my 360 and I've never suffered from scratched discs
Allow me to quote some guy's comment regarding the 360 I read somewhere
"Its bad people, I have a Mega Drive that works better than this piece of ****!"
:)

Some consoles don't suffer from it but mine certainly does. Take Oblivion as an example, if I switch off the console with the disc still in, it is guaranteed to result in an unplayable disc error next time around.
Its annoying as I hate having to eject the damn disc each time. :(

This was a first for me. . . Regardless, its all good now.
Anyone used one of those disc protector layers you can get (meants for audio cds) ?
for those that have never experienced this, it sounds like it's pretty common, so maybe only a matter of time ...
I've not had it happen to me in two years or so despite having it both horizontal and vertical, switching it off in a rage, leaving discs in etc etc. Having said that, it'll now grind anything I put in there to buggery knowing my luck.

I've never had any luck with these. Most of the time they cause disc reading problems, and I'm not too sure of the wisdom of having them in high speed drives.

You've had a working xbox for over 2 years, I'd say luck is on your side :)
oh, no, on my third. Wouldn't want to mislead anyone, like...
Must admit that FIFA thrashes the disc drive more than any other 360 game I've played so far.

Agreed, definitely joining Mass Effect on the full install list.
