I just ordered a pile of VCDs from Coolashop >

Stupid question, but theres no facility to 'turn off' subtitles on a VCD?

no there is not.

VCD can be picked up for less than 1.50p original now here in HK an indication that the format is on its way out!

Still, I've ordered some VCDs from DDDhouse and the quality is quite good - for the bargain price...
