hey peeps!

Does anyone know where I might be able to find out if the BBC series from the 80s "All creatures great & small" is gonna get a dvd release?

I noticed that the company doing "Robin of Sherwood" is also doing "Ever decreasing circles", so there is obviously a market for long dead TV series!

I know "All creatures..." gets aired on UKGold (or whatever!) every now and then but that's no use to my sister (who wants the series) as she lives abroad!

If anyone knows anything...

Great show, I'd love to see a release too. The movie version starring Simon Ward and Antony Hopkins is available in both R1 and R2 (R2 is 1.85:1 while R1 is 1.33:1 - I suspect the R1 is cropped), but I don't think that's as good as the series simply because it appears rushed (to fit the material in in 90 mins), while the same amount of material was covered in one whole season of the series, IIRC.

thanks Dave, I had no idea there was even a movie version!

There's actually been two (to my knowledge) movies about James Herriot; 1974's All Creatures Great and Small (http://us.imdb.com/Details?0071118) and 1975'sIt Shouldn't Happen to a Vet (http://us.imdb.com/Details?0079353).

Cheers,
Dave

All Creatures Great and Small (Series 1) (Box Set) (BBC)

Can't wait for this one. I loved the growing relationship between James Herriot and Helen that is the backdrop to the first series.

the R2 version is out 3rd March!
see here! (http://www.playserver4.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=105823)

it says 3 discs, yet the R1 will be 4 discs - I wonder if there will be many differences?

Apparently it’s only half a series!

oh that's an arse!
my sis only has a locked region 2 player on her laptop :(

Also just realised that the US have already had seperate 'complete' boxsets for series 1 & 2 from BBCWorldwide, with series 3 & 4 to follow...

I’ve got the 2 region 1 sets so can’t say much about the R2s.

Worth noting that there’s an All Creatures reunion show on BBC1 on Monday hosted by Dale Winton  It’s the first in an hour long daytime series every weekday.

No extras on the R2. At least on the series 1 boxes, series 2 - part 1 is still in the post.

The picture quality is *ok* on the R2 releases, if anyones wondering. Series one split over 6 discs, unlike the R1 which is spread over 4.

OK, but not more than OK. Of those 6 discs, 5 are DVD5 (2 eps per disc), and only one is a DVD9 (3 eps).

No obvious artifacting anyway, at least compared to the R1s. And you are getting it in it's native PAL (what it was Shot as).

Resurrection time!
I never did buy any of these releases but now my sis is back in the UK and a fully qualified vet with a multi-region player to boot so I'd like to get her the whole damn lot as a congrats pressie!
R1 is upto season 5 (as of last week) in their complete series sets and I think R1 is the way I'm gonna go as R2 has still only had series 1 & 2 (over 4 sets).

Now there's no way to order the R1s without getting hit by customs is there? Each series is well over the limit as it is! Would I be better off ordering the whole lot (series 1-5 plus the 'specials') in one go and getting hit just the once?

Also I've yet to find a single online review for the R1 releases, apart from customer reviews at Amazon US. (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforums-20) Has anyone seen any or have anything to say about the R1 sets and their quality / extras etc. Anything upto date would be very helpful!

Hi Richie. I’ve got 1-4 plus the specials. Quality is fine, nothing special. Taken overall (sets 1-4), the extras are pretty good with 3 featurettes, 3 commentaries and a doco on Herriot. Individually they’re a bit sparse but the R2 have sod all extra so at least it beats that. Got mine from DeepDiscount over the years and you’re right, they are quite pricey for archive stuff and are over the limit. Sometimes stuff shipped surface via Amazon.ca (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforum06-20) slips by HMCE but they’re extremely vigilant these days so it’s hard to be sure. Order in one go if you’re gonna as you won’t have to pay 6 lots of Post Office charges.

Am looking to pick up 5 myself so LMK if you find a keen price.

Hi Mr.e! Cheers for that info
I went for everything from Amazon US (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforums-20) in the end. Not necessarily the cheapest way but I need it all for Friday and at least it'll be just one customs hit! I would've gone with Amazon Canada (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforum06-20) but they didn't have series 2 even listed on their site!

Series 5 was US$55.99 which appears pretty much an average price at the moment from looking around at the main etailers.

2 other quick questions about these R1 releases:
Do you know how many more series are left to be released? Is it 2 or 3?
What sort of packaging has been used for these releases?
ta :)

There are 2 more to come: 6&7 from 1989 and 1990 and a special "Brotherly Love" which I’d imagine would be on the final set. Packaging is those multi-leaf Amaray things, not digistack or any of that cardboard nonsense.

PlayCentric (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-582776-348508) have series 5 for $46 with free shipping but for some reason it’s "temporarily unavailable" to order. Might look to get it from them if they ever reactivate it on their site.
