My local cinema is showing Monsters, Inc this weekend - a 'preview' showing. How does this work? The film doesn't officially open until tomorrow week so how can cinemas get authority to show it publicly up to a week early?

To be honest - no!

Went to see LOTR on Sunday night and saw the poster for Monsters, Inc: "See it early here on Saturday Feb 2". So I am!

The film companys set up free screenings to generate word of mouth among cinema goers.

The idea being that if they like the film the'll tell everyone at the office/College/self help group.

Look in the bargins forum. Details of free screenings are always poping up in there.

Last year i saw Shrek,Moulin Rouge,The Others and Ghostworld before genral release and for nothing.

My hubby is an ex-cinema Manager says previews are publicity stunts.

I'm an ex-projectionist an I can tell you that sometimes the cinema has a film weeks before its official opening anyway. This is for press screening, staff screening and general run throughs to examine condition of film print. Always been that way.

They also do it so they can include the box office figures in with the opening weekend....giving them an artificially huge boost
