Anyone have one? I like the look of it and it's Sim free for £299 HERE. (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=2&url=http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4-/5890187/Nokia-E71-Sim-Free-Unlocked-Mobile-Phone/ProductReviews.html).

Looks like a really good phone
http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-devices/review/2008/07/09/Nokia-E71/p1
I know. Just tried to see what it felt like - but none of the phone shops here (I went to 4) had them.
FFS.
It may be exclusive to Three at the moment, that's the only shop I've seen it in.

It's not exclusive to three, hence you can buy it from Play.com sim free in the first post.
It really is a great looking phone and has good all round functions, it reminds me of a smart version of the original 8800. If I didn't have my iPhone, I would probably get one of these (or a Blackberry Bold).

True. I didn't go into a 3 shop today.
Anyway, does anyone know how POP 3 emails work on mobiles generally. I'd like something which allows me to pick up email regularly and then Sync it at home with my PC.

I think Martin meant exclusive to a network via the shops rather than sim free.
I looked at the Bold today and it was huge. This looks a decent size.

Yeaah, but a handset exclusive to a network, can't be bought anywhere else, that’s the point of the network having the exclusive. But anyway, we sell the E71 on other networks, that’s pretty much the point I was making. It’s not exclusive to Three.
Yeaah the Bold is pretty big, but in terms of functionality (on the email side at least) is top notch and it has one of the nicest resolution screens I've seen in a while.
But like you, I still really just like the look and size of the E71. Plus we've had no problems with it so far...which is always good.
Its available on at least two networks - 3 and O2. The white one only appears to be available on 3 though:
<a href="http://www.pricesearching.co.uk/pricecomparisonmobile.php?manufacturer[]=Nokia&handset=e71grey&handsetcost=&contracttype=&network=&totalcost=&averagemonthly=&linerental=&gift=&numberoftexts=&totalminutes=&orderby=a.average_monthly_cost+asc&action=search&cacheresults=true">Nokia E71 on Price Searching</a>
Some questions on this:
It has HDPSA - does this mean I can use mobile BB? If so, how can I add this onto my current O2 sim? It doesn't seem to be one of their Bolt Ons.
Secondly, can this phone be used by my EEE PC as a mobile BB modem?

POP3 would work just like as if you were using Outlook as a POP3 client.
I would use IMAP for your e-mails if you can. That way your e-mails are always "in sync" with every device that you use your e-mail on.
You then don't have to sync it at home as it will have done it already...
Right.
I had a play with a dummy at lunch and like it. Actually put an offer in for one on the Bay last night and got rejected. May just Buy it Now tonight :D

Make sure you change Outlook to use IMAP as well...
Went for one in the end from eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44). Cost £266 incl.
Is there anyway to get these things polling for emails periodically like the Blackberry?

you can get them from Vodafone Business, I've no idea if it's on their website or in their stores, but I've set up several E71s for different customers, all from Voda Business. It's a really good phone in my limited experience of them, tempted to get one myself when I get time to look for a good deal.
The only criticisms of it that I could find were:
- it won't charge from USB (e.g. from a laptop), no excuse for not allowing that these days, especially on a phone intended for business users :oh-hum:. Nokia expect you to cart their charger around with you everywhere (and presumably buy spares from them etc). You can probably get a USB charger cable for it off eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44) though.
- it does have a USB socket on it and the USB implementation is pretty good; it pops up a menu when it detects a USB connection offering to be a memory stick, HSDPA modem, run Nokia Suite etc etc. But it is hugely let down by using some stupid proprietory USB connector, so you have to really look after the cable you get with it, or presumably pay Nokia loads of money for a replacement :oh-hum::oh-hum:. Which is weird because the little brother to this phone - the E51 - has a normal mini-USB connector on it.
If Nokia would just sacrifice their desire to make a few extra quid flogging extra chargers and cables and just use standard mini-USB connectors/cables instead, I think they would sell a hell of a lot more of these phones to business users that want to charge their phone from their laptop sometimes.
Is there anyway to get these things polling for emails periodically like the Blackberry?
Blackberry is Push technology (from the server) rather than Poll (to the server).
If you have an MS Exchange server available, you can add Nokia Mail For Exchange on to the E71 (it may be already on there, depending on where you get it from - Voda remove it from their branded phones but it is easy to add back in by downloading it from the Nokia Business site). This then adds Push Email to the phone - although it's not quite as good as the server-based ActiveSync on Windows Mobile phones (for instance, can't do subfolders). There is some third party sync software you can add (intellisync? not sure) that you can apparently add (at a small cost) that does a better job than Nokia Mail For Exchange.
If you don't have an Exchange Server I am pretty sure you can set the built-in POP3/IMAP client to poll regularly, but it'll probably use up both your battery and a significant chunk of your data package to do so, depending on how often you set it to poll!
Thanks Kenny. That's really useful.
On the data package thing, wouldn't getting an unlimited web Bolt on from O2 on my sim suffice for my email needs or is unlimited web not the same thing?
I've got the Nokia E71 now but need some help in setting everything up for email.
I will be using it to retrieve POP3 emails from 2 accounts which I currently have. I have already set the email forwarding on my onosworld hosting to 2 new accounts and will be using them as I also want copy of the emails on my home desktop.
My questions are:
- What type of data transfer should I be using to retrieve emails and browsing? The phone seems to offer quite a few - WAP, 3G,3.5G, etc (any of these actually "mobile broadband"?_
- can I get that as a bolt on from O2?
- can I use the E71 as a modem to connect my Asus EE PC.
I suppose the final question is whether or not I can set the phone to poll for emails automatically, like the Blackberry push servers?
dysfunction

Do you have a connection called "O2 Mobile Web"? I think that is best for web browsing etc. None of them are actually "mobile broadband" strictly speaking...
These are the only bolt ons you can get http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paymonthly/boltons
As far as using it as a modem...

I do have Mobile Web I think. Have seen 3.5G in the corner many times on my old N82.
Currently only shows an "E" though :(
Phone is great BTW. Finger print magnet but very nice in the hand and far more attractive than the Blackberrys everyone has here - though they got those from work :(
Also - is there a Symbian based dvix or avi player I can install? Can't watch any of my films.

Just found out that my work TyTN II will be shortly replaced by one of these. I've never much rated the TyTN I & II that i've had (although TomTom was great on the II). The problem being that the simple task of keying in a phone number is so tricky (all that holding down the 'Fn' button malarkey just got on my nerves. Does anyone know if it is easier on the E81?

Anyway, if you need to dial a number on the E71 you just dial it. The phone knows you are dialling and defaults the shared keys to numbers.
Only time you need to press the "number shift" key is when typing in numbers in an email/text.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.
Garmin XT Sat Nav - don't think this is standard though but it came with my E71.

Still looks like a good phone though had I not got the Touch.

Well, originally I just went to Skype (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=76) and picked the version for mobiles or Symbian, put in my phone number and it sent it to me to install.

Loving my E71. The built in Sat Nav is pretty good consiedring it's free. Tried McGuider but it won't install. Overall, apart from the tiny keys, it's an an excellent compromise for having a phone and email pick up device.

Vodafone Business. Funnily enough though, we ordered 26 phones and one turned out to be faulty (it wouldn't charge the battery). I called Vodafone Business to request a replacement, only to be told that the E71 was discontinued and that the replacement was the Nokia (Navigator - I think ) which is nothing like the E71 for business use. I argued that the E71 hadn't been out long, but they were adamant. Very strange :suspect:

Yup that is set as stated - could it be restrict sending 'soonest' if you are sending outside the times you can sent to restrict when email is pushed to the handset?
Perhaps trial and error is the way to find out! :D
EDIT Do you know the costs for Nokia Messaging once the 'trial' expires?

I picked up a pack labeled "stereo earphones with music adaptors (for Nokia and Sony Ericsson) in Tesco Extra today for £4.99. The earphones are much as you would expect at this price point, pretty basic (they don't even say which is L and which is R on them). but the gem in the pack is the adaptor, which coverts the 4-contact 2.5mm socket on the E71 (and probably lots of other phones) to a standard 3.5mm headphone socket. This means you can use any headphones/earphones with the Nokia. I'm aware that you can get 2.5mm --> 3.5mm adaptors from Maplin etc but they never have the fourth contact on the plug so never quite work properly.
Obviously you can't make and receive calls if you plug your own earphones in as you'll have no microphone but if all you want to do is listen to music I reckon this adaptor in this pack is worth it's weight.
got one of these to go along with N95 8GB and it's actually a better phone imo. It does everything that the N95 does but is more stable, better for mails (primary use) and just feels so much better in terms of build quality and operation.

I have an E71 as well - very well built phone. Although I am on my second one after my first one completely died on me and it had to be replaced.
What is the difference between Nokia Messaging and the standard e-mail application that comes on the phone? I find the standard application sends and receives e-mails almost instantly so why would I want Nokia Messaging and does it cost anything to use Nokia Messaging?
There is a new Symbian application for Youtube - download it using phone browser on m.youtube.com/apps. Very cool although video quality is not the greatest.
Also try Nokia Maps - I think it is probably a little better than Google Maps (I have both on my E71).
KennyVader

The search is way better in Google Maps. Nice how both Google and Nokia maps share favourites/saved locations though. And of course Google maps is completely useless if you're in an area with no / poor / expensive data coverage.
Nokia Maps navigation is really pretty good and pretty up to date too. Just way too expensive in my opinion. If it was half the current price I reckon everyone with a car would be signing up for it. As it is, with the way it wastes so much screen area when in navigation mode and with several "conventional GPS" features completely missing, there's no way they should be charging as much for a year's subscription as you can walk into Maplin and get a cheap but better featured dedicated GPS.

My local 3 store have the E71 for £20 a month, with 200 x-network minutes and unlimited internet, email, texts, 3 to 3 calls, skype etc. Just coming towards the end of my existing contract with them - does this look reasonable?
I ordered this online from 3...it comes with the 200 mins, unlimited text and 1gb internet for £20.
First I asked via the text help thing about pac codes and was given a £20 accessory voucher too.
Offer ends 31st March.

I have been using Nokia Messaging (latest version which supports HTML e-mail) for about a week now with my gmail account. While the interface is quite good, I have found it is not particularly reliable. Yesterday, I went about three hours where it would not sync e-mails (it just had the grey circle with a line through it where one normally sees the green spinning arrowed circle even though I had full GPRS coverage) and curiously I have lost a whole day's e-mails from the middle of last week (although I have the previous day's and later day's showing, missing day's e-mails are still on my gmail account and I can see them with the standard messaging application). When it works though, it is very good but it is certainly no where near as reliable as BlackBerry push e-mail.
What is everyone else's experience with Nokia Messaging?
It's still working for me, although I haven't tried the new HTML version.
There are times when I see that it hasn't sync'd for a while which is strange and not very encouraging. Hopefully just a glitch.

I'm considering this as well. The 200 mins talk is the main concern, but the main person I chat to is my cousin and he could just get a 3 PAYG sim and chuck it in when we're going to have a natter, so they're free.
I think I'd prefer a Blackberry Curve, but can't really find one for a reasonable price with data included, so if I can't I'll go for this for £20.

I just got an E71 as an upgrade but I can't fathom how to copy the couple of hundred contacts from my Sony Ericsson P990i to it. The Sony will do a send all but the E71 just receives the first contact. I'm blowed if I'm going to copy each one individually. There must be a way. Anyone?

Copy the contacts from phone to sim on the Sony, then from sim to phone on the Nokia.
That would be OK if they were basic name and number but some contacts have multiple numbers and addresses. When doing a batch send from the Sony the Nokia accepts the data but just displays the first contact details. I suppose I will have to install Nokia suite and the Sony equiv and save and restore to outlook or similar. I'm hoping that there may be some third party software which will do the job.
One bit of good news is that the E71 connects to my Sony bluetooth car kit OK.

That's crap, it doesn't use up data in any different way.
Wonder if there are any email apps for the E71 that will collect them via webmail. Looking on the 3 website's T&C's it's very vague. It says
"Unlimited internet and Facebook access is Internet Max add-on (1GB) - phone browsing only"
So does that mean you couldn't stream from You Tube, audio feeds, etc without incurring a charge? I was thinking unlimited would be good as I could access Last.fm or something, but if that's going to charge it'd cost a fortune.
Mine gets delivered on Sat so I might call them up first to clarify a few things, otherwise it'll be going back.

Hi Jarita
Thank you for the reply. So just to clarify, push email and pop3 email collection are included in the unlimited monthly allowance? So as long as I do not exceed 1gb/fair use I will not be charged for an internet, email, etc usage?
Also, it says unlimited internet subject to fair use on the internet site. If there is a specific limit of 1gb, surely by definition that means it's not unlimited? Are you allowed to say it's unlimited when there is a limit?
I do not expect to need that amount of use anyway, but my new 3 phone should be delivered tomorrow and obviously want to be sure of any hidden clauses and extra charges before I accept the contract.
and got the reply;
Hello,
Yes it 1 GB allowance per month, and yes you can use it for push email and pop3 email collection.

It's 3's current offer, advertised all over the place. I've even seen it advertised on bus shelters! I'd get back to them and complain, they're taking the mick!
It's on the site: £20 for unlimited text, data and email on E71 (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=370&url=http://threestore.three.co.uk/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=18UT20D090&=1201)

Yeah, I saw the deal on loads of bus shelters today...think I'll have to write them a letter.
I'd keep an eye on your usage via My3 just to be safe :)

I'm struggling to get mine connected to the internet. Phone and text work fine, and I can get the Planet 3 home page (why do they always have links to adult orientated material?! Surely younger people have phones as well?!) Any ideas if there are any 3 specific settings I need to select to get it working? Can't connect through my router either.

Shouldn't need any settings, Planet 3 will automatically connect you to '3'...and from the left soft button you can type any address you like...

Horse, a mate of mine also noticed he was charged for emails. He called up and they've corrected his account and put on a credit for the charges.
I'm liking my E71, but still struggling with the internet connection. Not sure why. It keeps asking me which access point I want to use, 3, 3 DS, 3 MMS or 3MMS. I keep getting 'no gateway reply' error.
I'm also having trouble installing a few apps. Mobbler and a theme (as sisx files). Both are saying invalid certificate. Any ideas?
Edit: Sorted out the invalid cert problem.... just had to change the setting in application manager to allow all certs.
Is it possible to customise the icons on the front screen, to remove a few and add other links?

What number did he call, as India have twice stated to me that emails are such and such £, dependant on their size...
Regarding your connection, I assume it says '3G' in the top left corner to show you should be able to connect to '3'...if so I'd take it to their shop and demonstrate that it doesn't work.
There should be lots of customisation as it has a switch to allow work and play versions of the desktop...
Just called customer service on 08003586795 rather than 333 from handset.
Been told I was charged due to the add on not being activated, despite web working for free, and will get a refund on next bill...

I think it's settings>connection>access points (from memory), and just delete the wireless.
I'm really liking mine, even if I haven't got it set up properly yet (still having a few probs with internet, but selecting 3MMS seems to be better than 3).
Gravity looks good for Twitter (altho for a small fee after trial), and it's great having email all day.

cheers stevie - corrected the bad typo in my first post, do you know how to get the phone to remember my router's wpa key?
I'm due my next upgrade on 3, and I'm seriously considering the E71. My main use of the phone will be to make calls and mobile email - is there anything to consider before going for this phone?
It's not that good for web browsing and no use to people with fat fingers.
Email, phone and small fingers - top notch.
KennyVader

I have relatively fat fingers and I find it great to type on, because of the "bumped" keys.
If you want bigger keys then obviously the price is going to be a much bigger device.
The E71 is particularly good if you turn the predictive typing on! Yes, even though it has a key for each letter! Takes a little getting used to but you just type a couple of letters and press space to accept the correct suggestion and go on to the next word. Because the first couple of letters you type are exactly what the word begins with and not one of several options (because the letters on a regular phone are three-to-a-key) the word prediction is way more accurate than a normal 12 button phone.
Are the keys much more fiddly than say the Xbox 360 keypad? I can type on that fine and while things look closer together I expect that won't be a problem.
Web browsing isn't a problem - not really using it for that. As long as call quality is good that's the main thing - the fact that it's usable for mobile emails is a bonus.
Not fussed about having a touchscreen phone - I prefer real buttons for the feedback.

I'm really liking mine. I find the keyboard fine, and it's not at all bad for internet browsing. Not in the same league as something like the iPhone, but I only want it for things like news, sport, travel, etc, and it's ideal for that.
The email is working well, although having it always on seems to drain the battery a lot quicker. I have it set up for three email accounts, one Yahoo and two Virgin and they all collect fine.
Does anyone know of a good RSS reader for it though? The one at m.google.co.uk doesn't work on the E71.

I like the built in browser and Opera Mini...but best browsing phone I've tried is the Nokia 5800(higher res than iPhone), though like others I didn't want a touch screen.

You can see it a bit better here. (http://www.krusell.se/product/3021) I have always used Krusell cases for my previous phones but I'm concerned that it might not suit the E71, especially with the daft clip on the back. Who the heck wants to hang a phone from their belt these days?

Must admit, it doesn't look all that to me (esp the zip! Looks nasty in that close up pic!) I'm actually finding the included case suits me fine, just as it protects it in my pocket.
Re apps.... I read that Nimbuzz canes the battery. Has anyone tried Fring and nimbuzz and can give an opinion?
I like Gravity, but it's not free, plus I find it keeps asking to choose connection, whereas dabr.co.uk just updates straight away (I have a link on the homepage to it).
Fring - rubbish
Nimbuzz - very good but as you say, apprently it drains batteries.

I haven't tried it because I have Exchange Server, but you can now push-sync gmail contacts and calendars to the E71 (and other S60-based phones):
http://www.google.com/mobile/nokia_smart/sync.html#utm_source=et&utm_campaign=mobileblog
Might be of use to some people.
Well I got this phone and really enjoy many aspects of it but I currently have three problems:
I have a wireless connection at my house, I have used the wizard, entered the WEP key umpteen times, the wireless network is spotted and 'known' but when I try to browse it says 'connecting to Netgear' and then 'WLAN unable to connect WLAN network not found.
Second issue I used teh Wizard to add my Blueyonder E-mail address details, it seems to have the pop3 and SMTP details correct but I can't send or receive e-mails, the e-mail in the phone is still waiting to be sent.
Finally
I am trying to synchronise the calendar, I have been able to do it by attaching the cable but I was assured in the shop that this could be done automatically over the internet - any idea how this works?
Actually i have so many questions and know so little about this - but if anyone can help with the above I woudl be really grateful - thank you.

I use the wireless connection without problem. Have you set up MAC address filtering on the router which would prevent the phone connecting?
For your email the outgoing smtp server should be the one provided by your mobile network provider and not Blueyonder's. Also take a look at Nokia Messaging (http://email.nokia.com/account/home.action). I find it very effective and better than the standard email application.
I can't help with your other queries but don't give up. I'm still getting the hang of mine but I'm liking it more as I become familiar with its features (apart from mysteriously deleting some of my contacts).
Olly - thank you you are a star! I limited the MAC addresses on my router and forgot! So that is sorted.
The e-mail is still an issue though I followed the wizard and it even had Blueyonder and filled in the pop3 etc for me but no joy. I actually wonder whether I really want to do that now as I wil still want the e-mails on my main PC. Maybe I will set up a new e-mail address and use it on teh move when I need it. I have no idea what Nokia Messaging is so will take a look
Something interesting today.
I saw that I was charged 0.48p so I rang. I was told that I could receive and access e-mails within my bundle (£20 deal) but that I woudl be charged for sending E-mails. I then explained that I had sent several e-mails, a number with pictures and only been charged for one of them. After a while a helpful guy came back to explain that the e-mail I have been charged for was sent using the '3' email and that I get charged for that, if I use my other e-mail 'googlemail' then that is free - this is crazy and although he reimbursed me he would not budge. Seems crazy.
I only used the '3' e-mail because when you try and add a picture into Nokiamail it is hard to tell which picture you are sending, and if you go to the picture and choose 'send' it automatically uses the '3' software.
Finally since installing my 8gig card I can no longer change my ringtones, when I try to do so I get choice of 'off' or 'download'
I am loving the phone but these things are annoying me somewhat - any suggestions?

How about selecting the picture first (in gallery, or directly in the camera when you take it) and then choose "send" then "email", it then asks which email connection you want to use, presumably you can choose Nokia Mail or Google at that point rather than 3. So that will accomplish choosing both the correct picture and the correct email connection easily.
Not that surprising that 3 charge for their email service, no different to Vodafone trying to get everyone to use their chargeable Vodafone Mail service really.
Kenny - thanks for the response
When I select the thumbnail and send via e-mail the only choice I have is teh chargeable '3'
When I open the picture I have two choices 'send by 3' or 'e-mail default' when I select the latter nothing happens.
I take your point about '3' charging except that there literature ALL says free e-mails and teh girl in the shop wrote 'unlimited e-mails on the brochure she gave me.

If you go to Main Menu --> Communications --> Messaging --> Options --> Settings, check that the Default Mail account is set to Google and not something like AOL perhaps?
I have seen a program on one of the blogs that lets you change the options that appear under "Send" in the Gallery etc, can't remember where it is now though :(
Kenny - when i do that and click on 'email' from the choices my default mailbox is 'Email' when I try to change it I et three options:
3mail
Email
Windows Live
Below default mailbox are also other options.
3mail
Email
Windows live
When I click on Email or choose options with this highlighted nothing happens :-(
and nothing else

E72 Announced
http://nokiae71.wordpress.com/2009/06/15/nokia-e72-officially-announced-e72-vs-e71/
Size and mass? E72 is almost the same size as E71, only 2.5 mm wider and 0.1 mm thicker. Additionally E72 is one gram heavier (128g).
Memory? Bigger internal memory (250MB instead of 110 MB), plus support of 16GB memory cards – E71 supports officially cards up to 8 GB.
Connectivity? HSDPA has been accelerated up to 10.2 Mbps instead of 3.6 Mbps, plus HSUPA support (2Mbps)
Photo features? Better camera, 5 Mpix instead of 3.2 Mpix
Battery performance? While E72 has the same battery (1500 mAh) its estimated standby time increased from 408 to 492 hrs in GSM mode, and 12 hrs 30 min instead of 10 hrs 30 minutes of talk time.
Audio? Standard 3,5 mm mini-jack instead of 2 mm one.
I'd definitely consider the E72. The extra internal memory should speed things up a bit on the browsing side.

Think all phones are due to standardise on that micro-USB socket in the next couple of years though, didn't the EU decree it or something? You can get retractable cables with that connector or adaptors off eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44) for just a few pounds.
I'd mostly be interested if they've done something about the dreadful camera on the E71. Don't care about a resolution increase but just sorted out the noisy images especially in slightly poor lighting conditions. I really like taking snapshots with the E71 and uploading them straight to twitpic/flickr and them having GPS location info encoded in, just such a shame that the pics the E71 takes are generally so dire.

I thought they settled on mini-USB, but I think you're right - it's micro-USB. Horrible connector in my opinion, but I suppose it does allow for smaller devices.
Does anyone elses E71 lose mobile signal occasionally and only get it back either randomly after an hour or so or after a reboot? It's not a coverage issue as I have a strong signal on 3 using another phone and when it does get the signal it's also getting a good one.
Want to know if it's a general issue or something unique to my phone.

Yeah, I have been at times, and also getting 'service blocked' sometimes when I try to connect to the internet. I'm going to restore mine to factory settings and hopefully it'll freshen it up. Think I've installed and removed too much! I remember my old Nokia 770 also seemed to struggle after I put too much stuff on it and was always better restored!
I'll try the restore too.
Stevie G
21-06-2009, 18:40
Mine seems a lot fresher after restoring, after a few days use.
I decided to pay for Gravity for Twitter... I had been trying Sweet60, which was great, until it decided to keep crashing after running for 10 seconds! Worked out about £8, but I like twitter for chatting with mates, plus I have a second account with all news, bands, etc updated, and it supports multiple accounts. I think it's great. Shame it doesn't support Facebook as well, but most of the status updates I see on Facebook at the moment are females friends commenting on where their kid has puked, what it had for dinner or how cute someone elses kid is, so I tend to limit Facebook to updates on Tweetdeck!
Now then.... does anyone know of an app (or a fairly easy way) of doing remote records on my SkyHD (or +) from my E71?
My E71 on 3 has problems staying on net. I've debranded so it has generic euro spec software and it still cuts out every now and then.
Anyone manage to get the BB I-player working yet? I am reading some articles suggesting it does work but when I point to the BBC download URL from my E71 it says my device is not compatible?
I have just realised that my firmware in June 08! I got this with 3 and I am sure I tried to check the firmware when I first got teh phone and it said it was up to date.
Anyone know what is up here and what I am missing from more recent firmware, I guess the 3 branding is stopping any firmware updates?
EDIT I went into Nokia's device update checker and the firmware100.07.76 IS the most recent?
Got my E71 a couple of weeks ago on Three, got the BBC iPlayer to work straight away with no issues. Just want to the site and then following the instructions/link I think. Certainly wasn't tricky...
Xeon - can you remember the linkyou used and did you download it using your Nokia or download it to your PC and transfer it
Right, just double checked and I'm 99% sure this is what I did. This was all done on my phone (using WiFi) btw, using the default browser.
1) Go to www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer.
2) You'll see a page with the following: "To use BBC iPlayer on your phone, you will first need to blah blah blah". There's a 'Download now' link - clicked that and worked my way through the screens to install it.
3) Can then run the application from the Installations folder (or wherever you move it to).
Hope that helps!

One thing I am noticing with the E71 is that with email set to always on and/or my Twitter client always on, it seems to cane the battery. Does anyone know if any ways of increasing battery but keeping it fairly connected?
Also, I find it does drop connection quite often, and always asks which connection to use (3, 3MMS or 3 summat else!) Is there anyway of making it default to 3?! Annoying having to select all the time!

You're lucky then. I can barely get it to work on the Vodafone network (and then badly at that). Most of the time it just tells me to use wifi instead. Guessing it determines the bandwidth available and cops out if it's not high enough. Haven't had a chance to try it on my home broadband yet...
I've not tried it on 3, only on Wifi. Perhaps it's getting hammered because of Wimbledon?
The TV streaming is perfect - wimbledon if fine with no buffering at all. BBC news occasional buffering but th eradio was impossible to listen to, very stuttery and all that through the 3G network, it has got to be said I am VERY impressed with this bit of kit

I had to give my iPhone from work to the MD when he lost his, got the E71 on 3 to replace it, best decision ever, this is a much better phone and whereas on my 10 mile bus journey to work the iphone had 3G for 5% of the time, the E71 is on 3G 95%, I was able to watch an episode of top gear across my entire commute on Friday, absolutely brilliant.

Ono - yeah, works very well. Plug and play on XP.
Via Bluetooth?
I used my N95 and now my N97 to do just this, easiest way I found was to install nokia PCsuite/OVI suite (whatever it's called now) and use the one touch access program that was built into it, just had to tell it what network I was on and it did the rest, it's actually what i'm using now!
Joikuspot is alright for the occasional use I found, but this is free, I can access secure webpages and my webmail isn't blocked, so it's all good :)

Does anyone know how to update the firmware on an E71 on 3 to the latest firmware available? On E71fanatics it says there are new firmwares available, but my updater only shows the current firmware in my phone. Anyone know how to get it?
I've just swapped my SE C905 for an E71 after numerous issues, the first thing I did when it arrived was to upgrade the firmware. As the o2 firmware is a few versions behind I used this method to upgrade it to the latest V3 code. Be aware though that restoring backups across different firmware versions isnt really advised. It's also wise to factory default the phone before uprading.
1. Download NSS from here... http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/files/NSS/NSS103815.zip
2. Install NSS and select Virtual USB as the port type.
3. Click the search button in NSS.
4. Go to 'Phone Info' and click 'Scan'
5. Make a note of the 'product code'
6. Click the enable tick box next to 'product code', enter '0567045' as the product code and press the 'write' button.
7. Close NSS and use the Nokia Update tool to get the latest software.
Cheers,
Martyn

I have read that the very newest firmware that came out about two weeks ago or so makes quite a difference to the camera which is the biggest letdown of the E71 for me. So I am itching to try it but having also read a few horror stories and as you say, camera aside, everything works fine, I'm a bit scared of doing so. I might be brave later.
Go for it, you can always downgrade again.

Anyone know of an alternative free video player for the E71 (preferably one that can handle most common formats)?
RealPlayer seems to struggle on longer clips (periodic pauses in the playback).

I've got a couple of E71 questions....
Skype - I have a Skype account and have signed up to the monthly £3.40 subscription that gives unlimited UK landcalls, but can't see to connect to any land numbers through the E71 Skype client. It also won't sasve any land numbers added to the contacts. Any ideas why? Is there an alternative Skype client for the E71 that will be better?
Second question - email set up. I have Nokia Messanging to collect my Yahoo email and my Virgin Media email (ntlworld.com), but when it comes to sending emails I can only send via the Yahoo, and cannot get it to sent Virgin emails. Anyone know what settings I need to use for Virgin Media? I've tried the normal smtp.ntlworld.com in the Nokia Messanging settings (online) but that doesn't work.
Thanks

Glad I popped back into this thread - just installed BBC iplayer and it is great!
Also Ono - if you install Nokia PC suite on your netbook you can then use the phone as modem via bluetooth - my wife does on her NC10. Very easy setup.

Thansk Dan. I normally tend to avoid bloatware stuff from manufacturers but in this instance will give it a go :)
Anyone else having problems logging into the OVI store, it keeps telling me I have teh wrong user name or password even though I can log in from my pc!

Has anyone tried using an E71 with an iPod touch to get internet on the touch? Mulling over getting a touch and it'd be handy if I could do that on occasions.
Also, is it easy connecting yoru PC to the E71 to use for internet access on the PC? I'm moving at the weekend and haven't sorted out my new phone/broadband providers, so will need some sort of access to get things like that sorted.
anyone know the status of the v300 firmware? didnt it get retracted?

It's an absolute doddle, you do need to install PC suite, but it pretty much is
1) switch on bluetooth
2) use PC suite and select the use phone for internet or whatever the button is
3) pair the phone with the PC
4) set the phone to always authorise (or be prepared to keep hitting yes on the phone)
5) surf
or if you're using a cable, you should only need steps 1 and 5.

There's an update for Gravity, if anyone uses it. Includes much better facebook use, lets you comment, like and forward statuses. This is a damn good app! Well worth paying for!

Gravity is an excellent twitter client - in some ways it is better than clients like Tweetdeck or Tweetie on my Mac.
Unfortunately, it's about the only good thing about the E71. I am massively disappointed with Nokia Messaging which has proven to be desperately unreliable. I have gone days when it has not managed to sync my e-mails at all (even though it shows the green circle indicating that it apparently has synced which is incredibly dangerous as the user believes that e-mail has synced and there are no messages rather than a sync failure) and when it does sync it only gets half the messages.
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=messaging&thread.id=17871
Using a Blackberry now.
Luckily email isn't crucial crucial for me so the E71 is still a dream to use :) Gravity is awesome, and the slim sleek styling of it I still love.

Let's be clear that that's Nokia Messaging email that you're talking about, which is frankly a bodge of a concept in the first place so not too surprising it's not that reliable. I've got hundreds of people now using Nokia Mail for Exchange on the E71, which is what businesses and corporates are far more likely to use, and that seems to be very reliable indeed, it's only downsides are that it still doesn't do subfolders (unless they've updated it recently) and you can't mass-configure things like signatures across lots of handsets at once. I don't think it's fair to say that email is broken on the E71, as so long as you're lucky enough to be able to partner it with an in-house Exchange server, it isn't.
Of course they should be pulling their finger out and getting Nokia Messaging sorted, so not to decry your experiences, but at the end of the day it's just one of multiple email clients that this phone supports.

1gb data, which is as good as unlimited web unless streaming video every day.
4000 texts and you get 2000 3 to 3 mins on top of the 200 cross network...

They've always said when the offer will end. Saying that, I'm sure they've extended that offer for a few months now. I'm sure something similar will be available soon.

Hi, ive managed to get one from CPW on the 3 deal, arrives Friday.
I always flash my phones and make them run the generic OS instead of phone companies versions. Should I do this is there any way to re-install any of the 3 features? if its worth it?
Any release date for the E72 yet?

Anyone know what the default voicemail number on 3 is?
No mention of it in the manual...
Also, my phone is totally unbranded, ive just downloaded Windows messenger - will its usage come out of my free internet useage? I cant tell from the replies above?
Thanks!
Voicemail is 123,and i think 3 give free messenger usage but you've free internet anyway so i'd assume it'll come out of that

CPW still have the deal on the E71 :D
I've given up on the E71 - it is terrible for picking up a decent solid 3G signal. I've gone back to my old N70 now as at least I can be contacted and make phone calls on it when at home. I tried to repair my old N95 but didn't get very far. Might give that another shot though as it's still the best phone I've used.
Hmmm, I'm not sure you should give up so quickly Colin. I still love the phone (just got the wifey one too).
Curiously, I was comparing my E71 to a couple of friends who just got theirs on Three and they had no signal whereas I had full signal with 3G.
o2 are the bee's knees.

I've given it a few months - it picks up absolutely NO signal at my house, wheras my N70 and N95 both had 2-3 bars and still do. Not only that, if I drive through an area with a signal, it won't pick up unless I restart the phone. I got the phone on an 18 month contract with 3 and yet I can't use it with them - I'd happily move to O2 now, but the sad fact is I can't and the fact that I can get a decent signal on other phones means that to me the E71 has major issues in that department when not receiving a strong signal :(
It's a shame though as it IS a great phone when it works and it's really nice to use, but if I can't make or receive calls with it then it's useless.

Supposed to be exclusive to Vodafone (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=389) in black when its released

Hi folks
Relatively new E71 user here, on 3.
I was going to get an 8Gb micro sd for it, but the lad in the 3 shop (who uses the phone himself) said stick to 2Gb. He found anything bigger really slowed the phone down.
Is there any merit in this? It's not like he was trying to sell me a 2Gb card either.
I run a 4gb card and it runs OK.
Anyway, this serves me right for upgrading FW when I was happy :(:
I updated the firmware of my E71 to the latest yesterday and then reinstalled Nokia Messaging (Email).
What I notice now is that the mailbox summaries on the home screen of the E71 shows my mailboxes as:
"@ 3 new in MrOno"
"@ 1 new in other mailboxes"
Prior to the update it was much nicer as it specified my only other additional mailbox's name as follows:
"MrOno email (3)"
"MrsOno email (1)"
I have a sim free E71 on an O2 sim. What am I doing wrong? Have installed Nokia Mail several times to no avail.
I run an 8gig in mine I reckon it is fine.
Thanks for the replies.
I like the phone, only prob I have is it loses date/time on each power-on....maybe a fault, maybe user error (quite possible!)
Oh, I can recommend CorePlayer, if you can stomach the cost.

Ah, ok, cool. Something to consider then... I fancy getting a touch.
Must admit, I've been pretty disappointed with my connection quality. Probably 3 more than the phone, but it loses signal a lot, and I find it struggles to connect to the internet and stay connected. Seems ok with texts, and Gravity seems to stay connected a fair amount, but that often times out as well. Expected it to have a much better quality connection.
Anyone know of a decent site for free aac ringtones?
Missus doesn't like the ones supplied.
Assume you can instal them simply via Nokia Suite thing?

I have the same problem with certain apps. Nothing happens when clicking them. These used to work. Example is BBC iplayer. Would love to fix this.
The VOIP SIP internet calling is fantastic. Need to figure out how to call out on SIP though!
PS I got this phone 2 weeks ago and it is great. I do wonder having seen a friend's iphone though if I made the right choice. Also quite like the look of the thinner blackberry.

You may be able to get out of the contract on the basis that the 'no service clause' in the contract is unfair and ought be struck out by virtue of UCTA.

I got an e71 a few months ago with 3 and it does seem to be a 3 issue when the connection drops, if I use my home wireless network to connect it stays connected with no issues at all.
I love the phone, I've been very impressed with it. My only problem has been trying to play games that don't handle the landscape orientation.
ColinP: Could it be a phone problem? My commute home involves going through a couple of no-signal areas and it sorts itself out no problem afterwards.

Girlfriend is using my E71 temporarily while she waits for a BlackBerry to replace the one that she had stolen. Weird problem which I never encountered when I was using it is that a lot of her calls go straight to voicemail without the phone ever ringing - anyone have experience of this on Vodafone (or any other network) and know what the solution is. She is not using the phone in any different way than I used to (if anything, she is less demanding as she never uses mobile internet/google maps/socnet etc) and same operator.
I am looking for a decent Chess game - I got 'Champion' from getjar for free and although fun is too easy, any idea?

There appears to be no way to access the Symbol menu, as a result I cannot log into my Hotmail account, nor my Facebook.

NOt sure there is a way to do it I'm afraid.

Skyfire will let you do it. It's become pretty much my preferred browser on the E71 now, thanks to it's flash support.

I couldn't get on with Skyfire on the E71 at all. Just seemed to crash all the time for me, or not let me fill in fields in forms. Shame because some of it's ideas such as the double click thing were excellent. I've stuck with the built in browser (as most of the big name sites are finally realising they need an automatic mobile version that works in the mobile phone default browsers too as well as their desktop site now) or Opera for the sites that don't work in the basic browser at all (usually online shopping sites I find).
I agree that the current version of Opera doesn't like the CHR key though. I am sure the previous version used to go to another page for any input fields so you could type any character (via the CHR button etc).
Shift/Caps does work for me though Ono?
