Sounds like active divert has been selected, take a look through the menus and deactivate them all?
Thanks - checked that but it was all properly set up. Some calls would go through while others did not. She has a new BlackBerry from Vodafone now to replace her stolen one so no longer an issue.
She did ask about the E71 problem when she was in the shop picking up her BlackBerry and the assistant told her that a few people had been reporting that problem - apparently if someone calls at the same time that the E71 is checking for e-mail over its connection then the line is busy and the call is diverted immediately. That also explains why she would get voicemail messages without getting a missed call notification. She would have no idea if anyone called her if they did not leave a voicemail. Solution is to only check e-mail when you know no one is going to call you - fortunately most people know exactly when people are going to call them.

Got a problem with Nokia Messaging when it syncs my gmail. It no longer syncs my inbox! It syncs sent items (bizarrely) but I have no idea when I get new mail. Am I alone?
I remember when I had to endure Nokia Messaging with gmail and it started randomly losing days of e-mails and keeping very old e-mails in my Inbox for perpetuity.
You will need to reset it. I think it's under Settings --> General --> Reset Data. Might take a while if you have lots of messages.

thanks Bearhorn, i ended up reinstalling Nokia Messaging and it now works fine. up until recently it's been perfect. I'll try what you have suggested if it happens in future.

Saw a mates E71 yesterday and the central white light was 'breathing' - like a iBook on charge.
Checked my options and mine is also set to on, but has never worked?!?
The light does work because it flashes when I have a notification.
Latest firmware aswell... any ideas?
Bearhorn

I think the breathing light on your E71 is working but you just don't notice it as it does go off after a while when the phone is on standby mode or something. I never knew what the breathing light signified when I was using my E71.

Ovi store now has a Facebook app specially made for the E71 & E72, works far better than the mobile site, as good as the iPhone app...

the FB app has been around for a while and is rubbish.

Yeah I tried the official S60 app and just went back to m.facebook.com in opera mini which works far better.

I Gravity for Facebook. It's an excellent Twitter app but hs facebook as well.
I upgraded the firmware on my E71 last week. Pain in the arse losing all the contacts, calendar, texts, etc, but I am finding the connection better since upgrading. It had been terrible a lot of the time for internet connection, but seems better. Far from perfect, but noticeable better.

Tried it last night, thought it was pretty lame. Will continue to use the mobile site via Opera Mini I think.

Now <i>that</i> I can get excited about! :) Will try this tonight! Not expecting it to be up to TomTom standards, but a free sat-nav app is nothing to be sneezed at.
Oh nice, I'll try that tonight as well. :D
I have this already on my Nokia and it is brilliant, got me around France no problems. However the licence came to an end and I refused to pay £5.99 a month to retain it. Is this now free? Because when I try and use it it tells me I have to buy a new license etc.. Anyone got any ideas?

Yeah I'm confused, Ovi Maps has been available on the E71 since it came out and you used to pay various amounts of money for the turn-by-turn navigation instruction add-on, depending on which countries you wanted and whether you wanted walk or drive navigation. I paid for a month of the Ovi Maps drive navigation in Australia because it was about £5, so considerably cheaper than buying an Australian GPS, and it was just about usable but there was no way I would pay that for it in Europe, way too many features missing or just generally crap so paying for a proper GPS solution (in my case McGuider) was far more sensible. The walk instructions were good for when I visited Europe (it was nice how you can preload Ovi Maps from a laptop so not racking up mobile data roaming costs) but latterly they made the walk instructions add-on a little too expensive as well.
Have they now made the navigation instructions free?
I have downloaded the latest version and will test it and report!
It seems to me that it is still asking me to buy a license
KennyVader
22-01-2010, 13:04
Yes me too, still shows the prices.
Also if I go to the Maps download page on my E71 I get told that it's not available for my phone, which is odd, because I have previous versions on there, obviously.
And Maps is not in the Ovi Store! WTF! Nokia really annoy me as they have some great products but from all my dealings with them the entire company staff seem to be complete muppets, constantly FAILing. The first place I'd put it would be the OVI Store so it immediately came up from a search for "maps"!!!
Nick dVl
22-01-2010, 13:12
So "Ovi Maps" is the same product as the pre-installed "Nokia Maps" then? Hmm....that doesn't sound promising.
Edit: According to the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8472165.stm), it sounds like it should be a new product with completely free turn-by-turn navigation!
KennyVader
22-01-2010, 13:26
No Ovi Maps is better than the preinstalled Nokia Maps (Nokia Maps had navigation too but the screen layout was pretty unusable, it's much better in Ovi) but it seems that a newer version again of Ovi Maps than what we've been using is required to get the new free navigation. But in their usual uncoordinated way Nokia have either pulled this very new version since KillerHertz first spotted it or they never managed to make it available in the first place.
Probably I'll just leave it for a few days by which time they might have got their act together.
Well I downloaded the new Ovi suite and rebooted a few times then downloaded the maps updater and aftera number of failures it is now downloading a 150mg+ file, we shall see
Nope after hours of messing around still nothing, depsite it telling me it was downloading to my phone.
Bearhorn
22-01-2010, 18:24
What a shambles. Nokia really need to get this maps thing right to stop people going over to iPhone and Android which seem to have their app stores in much better order than Nokia have. I honestly think that Nokia's future lies in dumping Symbian and Ovi and building devices based on Android. While they used to be the default choice for me when choosing a mobile phone, their recent efforts with N-devices and the E71 has led to me being much happier with BlackBerry devices.
The whole Ovi stuff is crap sadly, even more compared to the iPhone/Android versions.
I do like my E71, but then I didn't pay for it (and before it I only had 'simple' phones). However once my contract is up in a year, I think I'll be switching to an iPhone/Android alternative.

KennyVader

The Nokia website clearly shows it's for the E72 only, not the E71 :(
I wouldn't say it's clear at all ... depends which links you follow ... for instance if you click KillerHertz' link above and then "prices and coverage" it immediately goes to a page that says "Navigation on your Nokia, for free, forever". Also via KH's link if you go to download there's no way to tell that you're going to get a different download for the E71 than you are if you select E72. And previous Ovi Maps 3.0 downloads have not needed to distinguish between these two phones.
Reading on Nokia's own forums and on other sites it looks like the free navigation is only going to be on the E72 (and other current phones) as Nokia plan to use it to try and get people to upgrade. Which is fine in one sense because free navigation wasn't part of the E71 when we bought it. But the way they're doing it is a very dangerous game to play. ******* off your existing user base won't exactly encourage loyalty when those people come to upgrade their next phone, they'll see that Nokia deliberately left the E71 users behind and will think "hmmm well I could get the E73 (or whatever's out at the time) but Nokia have a proven track record that means they'll screw me when the E74 comes out". And it's such a crucial time for mobile phone hardware right now with what Google are up to.
Nick dVl
24-01-2010, 12:50
Try going to nokia.co.uk. I'm sure that if it was compatible with the E71, it would have said "E71/E72", not just "E72". That's like an app for the iPhone saying it supports the 3GS, and 3G users getting all huffy about it when they try it out and it doesn't work on their older, slower phones.
But yes, it is crappy that Nokia doesn't support it - yet. I'm sure that Nokia knows that if they **** off their E71 users, they'll just buy a Google Nexus as their next phone and use Google's free navigation instead rather than go for a E72 which brings very little else to the table.

You are right but you will be using the free trial period rather than because it is free on the E71. It works on my E71 too but because I have used the free trial on Nokia Maps it wants me to pay to use turn by turn navigation on Ovi Maps.
Well tonight Virgin media are down so no broadband and no Virgin TV. So I plugged my E71 and connected to Three and I could get my e-mails and check some web pages and post here!
How brilliant, it inst fast but it works. Very impressed.

So enormous bad feeling still building over Nokia's silence about letting legacy customers enjoy free navigation on the E71, still unexplained why, even if they can't make the changes to the ovi maps program to make it stop asking for licences right now, they don't just make the licences cost 1p/year or something, so practically the same as free.
Anyway on another matter the CTRL/CHR key (bottom right) has fallen off my E71 at some point, anyone any experience of this? Are Nokia likely to honour the warranty on this, and if so will it mean being without the phone for a week, or am I better off just getting a replacement keyboard off ebay which I see will just cost a few pounds. Trouble is any phones I've taken apart before have not stayed working very long afterwards :|

That's really annoying that they're not showing signs of giving us E71 owners free sat nav.
One thing that I do find irritating with my E71 is that when I'm in one app and need to go back to the main menu, when I go back to the previous app it usually has to reload. Is there any way of flicking between open apps? It's a pain having to re-enter a website address just because I've had a call!

Press and hold the Home key (little house icon) for the Task Manager to switch between running apps.
And update your firmware if you haven't already because I used to have the web browser disappear like you describe, but since getting up to date it seems to run in the background OK.
The Opera Mini beta is good at staying running in the background too.

Anyone know how to switch on the "type a name on the home screen" functionality?
I used to be able to type "dave" and it would show up a list of contacts that had that word in it on the home screen and I could move up and press the call button.
After installing the PC Suite software it installed some things on the phone and now that doesn't work, I have to go via the contacts app.
Allan start typing a name and 'options' appears at the bottom left of the screen. Then choose 'Contacts search on' da da!
Incidentally I had an e-mail to my E71 this morning from Nokia telling me maps were free forever until I clicked on the link and E71 still not listed. :-(

Has anyone been tried to contact Nokia/3 to see if us E71 users will be getting Satnav like most other Nokia users? I saaw an ad in the Metro today for an E72 on 3 and it mentioned free satnav. :(
Any idea what the differences are between the official Skype App (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=76&url=http://www.skype.com/download/skype/symbian/) and the version Three offers?
I wonder if anyone might be able to resolve a couple of issues.
When you have an unread text or a missed call there are little symbols, text and yellow at the bottom of the screen that you can click on, mine have disappeared anyone know why and how to get them back?
Secondly I have have some calendar nightmares and would like to delete the E71 calendar details for a fresh start anyone know how to do this, the delete function only seems to want to get rid of past events.
Ideas appreciated
And still no free Sat nav!

"You need to enable it as a home screen application:

or
Menu --> Tools --> Modes --> Home Screen Applications --> Enabled Applications
Then check the box for "Message Notification"

Thanks for your help - it looks like the missed calls is working, actually before I changed anything. I got an E72 a few weeks ago and its great.
I've just read through this entire thread, and have been struggling with the iplayer can anyone help?
On the iplayer site it says compatible with E71 but no mention of E72. When I try to watch anything it tells me that my version of flash needs upgrading but it only offers upgrades for windows/mac/linux etc, not mobiles.
I also couldn't find anywhere to download anything (people were talking about downloading the iplayer)
Anyone else notice that an annual subscription to use the maps had vastly reduced to £8.89!!!
I am not sure exactly what you get but this is a big step forward. Has anyone bought it yet?
KennyVader
15-03-2010, 11:44
Ok that's pretty decent, considering it covers all Europe. Tempted to try the Traffic licence at the new price of £3/year, also the Walk Navigation licence has come down to £5.29 and it appears to be all regions, permanent licence (not sure if it was before). I found this very useful indeed in an unfamiliar European city, if you turn the volume down then you can just put the phone in your pocket or in your hand down by your side and it gently buzzes to tell you to look at it to tell you to take a different side street or whatever. The Walk licence has disappeared from the shop for some reason but it comes up to be bought if you plan a walk-to route.
Of course knowing my luck the day I pay out will be the day before it finally goes free :). Could be that that day is going to be quite far off if they've rearranged the price tarriff (but not gone as far as 1p per licence :()

I might be late to the party but just discovered that Nokia Mail for Exchange v3.0.5.0 became available for E71 users a few weeks ago - bringing subfolder support at long last to anyone that syncs with an Exchange server. (newer phones have had Exchange subfolder support for some time).
You can download it from the Ovi Store application. What they don't tell you is to reboot your phone after installing it (and it will do a full resync of the mailbox, which may take some time).
Opera Mobile/Mini out of beta now.

Opera Mobile/Mini out of beta now.
I thought it had changed from Beta 2 to 3
Everything appears to be faster apart from Facebook...
Is there a link to this, I hope it is not thru OVI stores as it will not run on my E71, keeps saying number not valid, password not correct etc!

Link to what, opera mini?
Just go to http://mini.opera.com/ on your phone with the built in browser.
p.s. once you have installed Opera Mini it includes a link on the home page to an Opera App Store that seems a lot more usable than the stupid Ovi Store. The Opera one is in partnership with Getjar and others that have provided mobile apps for download for ages.
Thanks Kenny - I have replaced version 4 with version 5 - is that right?

With Ovi Maps I have downloaded maps for the Canary Islands and these report in Ovi Suite as being on my phone. I am hoping that by downloading the maps that when I go abroad next week I'll be able to use the satnav feature without it accessing data (to avoid roaming data charges).
How can I test this. I don't see any option in Ovi Maps that allows me to browse maps installed on the phone and when I search for anywhere in Lanzarote it says it can't find info offline. This makes me think it doesn't realise the Canary Islands map is loaded.
Any ideas?
EDIT - cracked it, Ovi Maps recognises 'Spain' as the country for the Canary Islands. I'll leave this up in case anyone else has the same idiotic problem! :D
DJ - I am not sure exactly what I did, I think it was some setting about not roaming. Anyhow I went to France last year with downloaded maps and used it everyday, including looking for interesting local sites and shops and when I got home not a penny charged. Quite brilliant. I also used Sports Tracker to go on several runs and again nothing downloaded so no charges. Enjoy!

People are saying on the official Nokia forums that the E71 briefly appeared in the list of selectable phones for the free version of Ovi Maps on the Nokia Chinese and Finnish websites this week. The phone isn't selectable any more (but the installer file can still be downloaded) but I imagine this means it's close to being released for everyone.
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/t5/Maps-Navigation-and-GPS/Ovi-Maps-3-03-Free-Navigation-for-E71/td-p/611269/page/17
Personally since they put the licence price down to about £8 a year for the version of Ovi Maps I already had on my E71 I went for that, and it's working great, I got the traffic as well for an extra £3 and although I've not been offered a reroute due to traffic yet, it has listed traffic problems that I've seen on the other side of the road etc so it seems quite up to date. In London anyway it seems to cover A roads and not just motorways that traffic reports on Google Maps are restricted to.
So now that I paid the £8 + £3 I'm not in too much of a hurry for the free version as my two mates that both installed it on their N97 say it crashes quite often.

This isn't specific to E71 users but I have just tried out a live streaming site for the free TV channels including the World Cup games on ITV and BBC - http://yamgo.com - registration is required.
Stuttery here and there but okay. YMMV and no doubt depends on your 3G coverage.
Bit like http://tvcatchup.com/
I can't connect on mine. I'm getting really fed up with the poor quality of the 3 network in west London. There were no tubes this morning and I had to get buses to work so needed Google Maps to follow my route and it was constantly about a quarter of a mile behind. Not the first time it's done that either. Only anther three or so months left of my 3 contract.....
Ok here is something that has stumped me so far. 18 months of use has left me with a few strange words, because of typos that have become 'stuck' in the dictionary for predictive text. One of these is 'Yoitube' and when i mistype 'you' as 'yoi' I end up with strange text messages that mean my friends laugh at me!
So how do i rest the dictionary or remove these words?
Many thanks.
Aha it wasn't possible with this bit of software - sorted now and may prove useful to others

On a different note I get a new phone in August - HTC - Desire (is this their flagship?) 0r Iphone 4?
I love my E71 but the screen is too small and the calender sometimes plays up.
I swapped my beloved E71 for the HTC Desire. Not regretting it yet. Only thing to add is that you need a charger at home and at work :D
Ono - does it do diary well? I currently sync my Outlook via Google calander using Mail for Exchange which sometimes duplicates - is it better than that?
What about running I use Nokia Sports tracker and that is brilliiant is there anything similar?>
I am guessing music is good, I would love to be able to listen to opera/Pink Floyd seamlessly but cant with the E71.
Any other great selling points?
I actually started using Google Calender because it syncs so well. Android phones work well with Google obviously :D
It's also a great little multimedia device (music, photos and avi/divx).
Not sure about running stuff. Sure there is a widget or it though.
Got five months left to run on my contract with my Nokia E71 (although if I stay with Three I'll be able to upgrade before then). Although I've enjoyed it as my first smartphone (and phone with the internet) I'm looking forward to replacing it with either a Desire/iPhone.

If you update the UK maps on your E71 (via the latest version of Ovi Suite on a handy PC) the traffic info now works properly

What's the battery life on these like?
allan175

Depends what I'm doing with it, but I usually charge it every 3 days or so.

That sounds reasonable, thanks. Like the look of this one - now to hunt around for a nice cheap price :)

I've found it to be a great phone, there wasn't a lot of games etc for it when I last looked, since most phones have the screen in portrait orientation rather than landscape, but overall I've been impressed.

I've really liked having my E71, although I have found the signal on 3 pretty poor (I live in west London).
And I do find it hurts my ear after a long phone conversation! :suspect:
My 18 month contract with 3 is up soon so I need to be looking at what to get next. I'm reluctant to spend more than £20 a month and also like the physical size of the E71. If only they made a model with a touch screen it would be perfect for me!

I do like my Nokias and I've stuck with them for years. I'm tempted to go to an Android phone next though, just because of the ease of coding!
Kenny I am in Ovi suite and have teh maps installed from ages ago but no idea how to update them! Where are the options ?
Ah i needed to update Ovi Suite!
But when I try and access maps it says internal error! grrr
KennyVader
23-09-2010, 15:05
Yeah I think it's only the very newest version of Ovi Suite that properly recognises what maps are already on the phone and is therefore able to update them when required. The older versions made you reselect and reinstall the map sets from scratch so you couldn't tell when map data had been updated.
You may also need to update the actual Ovi Maps application on the phone as well, maybe that's why you are getting the internal error, that is still a separate download from nokia.com I think.
Thanks Kenny - I paid for the map - about a tenner I think - is this going to be different to me becayuse of that do you think - are the free maps any good?
KennyVader
23-09-2010, 15:30
shouldn't be any different to the process I went through because I paid for it too before it became free. I think it is worth upgrading to the free version of Ovi Maps (3.03 I think), yes.
I do have my E71 on the latest general firmware too though, but you lose the data/config if you update that so you may not wish to.
I'm getting an Android phone next - 300mhz CPU showing its age right now.

Is the E72 not much of an upgrade over the E71?

I really dislike the Nokia PC software. It's so poorly laid out and awkward to use. I've just installed the Ovi Suite and that's not much of an improvement. Presumably I can uninstall the older PC suite completely?
Gotta say I am sad to see this phone go now (moved on to the Orange San Fran, Android phone).
Was built like a brick **** house and was very reliable without too many reboots. The CPU and OS was showing its age, but as a solid phone call and texting mobile, 10/10.

I did lose a few of the keys off mine, but I did keep it in the same pocket as my keys all the time. Once one of them had popped off two more followed quite quickly. However it was easily fixed with a replacement keyboard off ebay for about £3, which was dead easy to fit, and now it looks almost brand new again.
Also spare batteries can be had on ebay for a couple of quid each, they're not as good as the Nokia original, but they would get through a day. So for Glastonbury when I was five days without power I just took a whole stack of six or seven of these cheapy batteries. No idea what I'm going to do with my iphone next Glastonbury, I can take these external battery things and solar chargers etc but it's not going to be as simple or as light as a pile of E71 spare batteries.
I still have mine as my spare phone (for HTC Desire). My Missus has her white one still too.
Yeah, would rate tis as one of the very best phones I have owned for what I needed it for - phone calls, text and emails. Battery life and build quality were brilliant. I still love writing on the keypad over the touch of the Desire.
Mine is still in almost perfect condition except for the Nokia case which is really tatty :D

My contract runs out soon and I was looking at phones but nothing at a decent price leapt out at all. And now I've got used to a "proper" keyboard I'm not keen to go to a touch screen.
Stevie G
06-10-2010, 14:29
Yeah, I'm in the same situation, contract due to end shortly. Not sure what to do. I really like having the keyboard of the E71, but the OS does crash occasionally and I've had a lot of connection issues.
I'm reluctant to pay much more than £20 a month - for £30 I may as well be paying another fiver for an Iphone. The Blackberry is an option, but all their higher end models are now a good few years old.

I'm leaning towards an Android phone, but I don't want to pay more than £20 a month and I want a keyboard too!

Android and a keyboard?!
Exactly! A hard to find thing since the G1, everyone seems to be moving to touchscreens and I'm not keen on them.

It is a tough decision to make. I have a touch and I hate using it for typing emails, web addresses, etc. Shame they didn't put some sort of touch screen on the E72.

Had similar nagging doubts several months back when I picked up a Samsung Galaxy S to replace E71, but had no issues at all - Swype is fantastic for text entry
Preinstalled on the SGS, understand you cannot (legitimately) get it on Desire or most other devices yet, but think it may release to market in the future.

So... all those people who got the E71 for just under £20 on a 18 month contract... now that your contracts are expiring, what phone/contracts are you going for?
I can't decie. I'm reluctant to pay much more than £20 a month but can't get a Blackberry Bold, HTD Desire or Samsung Galaxy S for under £30 so am struggling for ideas!
Has anyone tried 3's retentions department? Are they generous when trying to keep customers?
Stevie - Was on 3 with E71 £20 pcm now have a Galaxy 1gb internet and 500 mins, £25pcm (but it might even be £20 as possible mistake which I have to wait to see the bill to check) - I had to fight hard but am really pleased.

I'm in the same boat, but I've decided to go for an HTC Wildfire so I have an Android phone I can tinker with but carry on using my e71 as my day to day phone. I'm going to cut my minutes too so I'm on the "100 Texter" which has 100 minutes, "unlimited" text and internet which is £18 a month.

Called up to get my PAC and have spent an hour and a half on the phone! Head is spinning and need to research more.
Posted a new thread for advice though as it's not really relevant to the E71 thread!

Well, I'm all undecided again! I was all ready to go for the HTC Wildfire but a friend at work has pointed out a Motorola Flipout, Android and with a keyboard. Which then led to to a Motorola Milestone, another Android with a keyboard!
They are with Orange though so I'll wait until nearer the end of my contract (mid January) and see what's around then.
I am totally happy with my HTC Desire.

If you want a keyboard then why not go for the HTC Desire Z

Does anyone know how much data the Ovi maps uses? once I get a new phone I'm thinking of chucking in a Three PAYG sim card into my E71 and using it for satnav on the occasional car journey and the sports tracker for going running, but I've no idea how much it will cost via PAYG for the data use.

Connect it upto your PC, download the maps, then set to offline. No data usage used.

But won't it not know where I am to follow my journey and give directions?! Or does it not use any data to connect to the satellites and track a journey?
Stevie G

Cool, thanks! Is there a shortcut to go offline/online btw?
Stevie - i used mine to travel around France. I also used Sportstracker to run around France and not a single penny spent on data. I think you have to turn roaming off and don't let the applications connect to the net but download the maps before you go.

Ah, excellent! I didn't realise that! In that case, once I upgrade I'll restore my E71 to factory settings and use it as a going out on the lash phone/sat nav device! :)

Lol. Do you know if it costs anything to divert from one Three number to another? Thinking that if I get a nice new phone I'd rather take out the old one on heavy nights out, but if I divert calls and texts to the PAYG, would that be free in my included 3 to 3 minutes and text allowance (if both are on Three)?

It uses GPS, it doesnt use data unless you set it too.

I've given up on Nokia and their crappy OS.
Have just bought Missus a HTC Desire to replace her E71 :D
lmao Seven works on my San Fran quite well :)
