My contract with orange is just about up after 18 months of rubbish reception I'm moving from them so a new contract is on the cards. (will be vodafone or o2 (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=67) - rubbish reception from all the others - tried PAYG cards for them all )
is there anything out there to replace my N95 or should I just go sim only for now ?
N96 looks nice but its not really a massive step up / never been a big blackberry fan ( but never had one ).
I feel the iPhone would be a step down in functionality terms but might be tempted to get one on contract just for the unlimited internet/ cloud wifi and sell on the iphone itself
any other options ?

I'm in the same position right now. I have a n95 and contract due to end.
I've been looking at the n96, looks good but not a massive step up. So now starting to think about the n85 which is due sometime soon. It's not a massive step up either, but there are a few things about the n85 which are appealing to me now. USB charging, better battery with a longer life, the screen is also going to be better and more engery saving.

Im the same contract up Oct 16th.I got a 3g iphone (not on contract) and am trying that out.N85 does look good similar spec to N96 and far cheaper only thing that puts me off is the slightly smaller screen and those 18 month contracts.

Won't work as I don't think iPhone sims work in other phones plus the Cloud deal is tied in with the iPhone MAC address for authentication.
I'm currently moving from an N95/iPod Touch combo to a PAYG iPhone + £20 Simplicity sim from O2 with free web bolt-on to replace the PAYG sim. Selling my N95/iPod should yield about £225/250, I've cut my mobile bill to £20 a month and I'm only on a 30 day notice contract so I can switch to a new iPhone next year if I want to with no likely hassle.

This is what im going to get Simplicity £20 a month (runs out 30th this month). Most of the phones i like are just due out N96,N85,Sony X1 so would need to pay a premium to get them plus an 18 month contract.
Get the N95 8GB it's an upgrade to the N95 imo. I won't entertain the N96 after having one on load for a few days and didn't really see any benefit over the N95.
The E71 isn't too bad from what I've seen and could be a contender. Other than that you have the HTC Tytyn and Touch Cruise.

I've used the Mrs's iPhone in my N95 ok - was there for a day while I got O2 to turn on MMS on the account - worked ok for me.
The Cloud access woudl be nice to have but TBH I cant recall ever being in a Cloud WiFi zone so not a deal killer
When is the N85 out ? any ideas on pricing ? the N96 is pricey for what it is ?
What about the Nokia XpressMusic 5800 Tube? Out at end of the year and looks mighty fine.

I disagree. You can put more memory in the N95-1, and the N95-1 has a lens cover.

Would you necessarily know though?
I didn't think I would use it much either - but it has a hell of a penetration. Most of Norwich has it (unbeknownst to me until I got the iPhone 3G) and also was using it extensively in London over the weekend too.

Oh well then, I'm sold!!!!!
It can take more than 8GB SD card into the Micro SD slot?? I'm not sure many people have actually tested it but if you want one then go for it.
It's got a bigger screen
It's got a much quicker camera
The lens cover doesn't bother me in the slightest , in fact it's easy to not have to worry about turning the phone round to get it.
I can customise the phone more and have 7 desktop icons (standby)
The battery life is far better
It looks far sleaker imo.

I currently thinking of just getting this plan and keeping the N95 - can change quickly if anything takes my fancy rather than rushing into another 18 month contract

looks like I'll need to factor in the £20 that Orange want from me to provide the operator unblock code !! that came as a shock
Is that normal ?
No you should be able to request the PAC code for free, or at least you could when I last ported my number.

Yea - PAC is free but this code is to unblock the phone from Orange to allow me to use the O2 Sim.
The 5800 is looking more tempting - some more info available now after yesterdays launch Nokia 5800 (http://europe.nokia.com/A41271008?nocache) . and 'Comes with Music' could be nice to have
Yes the unlock code to make the phone SIM free is going to be chargeable I'm afraid. Might be cheaper to go online and find a place that will mail you the code.
Nokia N95's are easy to unlock by just typing them in from the keypad.

Yes I quite like the look of that...
But then this looks ok as well...

its becoming clear to me that in the 18-20 months the N95 1GB has been out there isn't really any phone out there that can do much better atm! Latest firmware for N95 has made it best it has been, has great camera, easy use for phone and text, GPS and sat nav via Garmin or Tomtom, decent music player and upto 16Gb memory + host of add ons.
Just played with the N96 and bar being smoother has no advantages that can be used atm at all over the N95 1GB!

I've gone for the O2 simplicity deal and will wait and see
I've found out that the phone I have is already unlocked for other networks. Orange sent me a replacement months ago as they couldn't repair mine - looks like I've got lucky there.
But yea I'm not impressed with the N96 at all, maybe if I was new to the N-series it would be great , but I've had the N80 and N95.

i see a few on this thread are planning to use a Simplicity Sim on an Iphone 3G PAYG. Has anyone done this yet and does it work without resorting to jailbreaking?

Ended up going for a N85 and it was delivered today :)
So far, so good! Lovely phone much the same size as the N95. But the screen is really nice and everything seems to be running fine.
Will need a few days with it to really see what it's like and what the battery life is like.
