View Full Version : How to get a US Sim that will accept text messages from the UK while in the UK?

Hello,
Bit of a convoluted question but am wondering if anyone here has any ideas...

The UK company that I work for needs to be able to send text messages to USA mobile phones.
We've got a company that will send them, but obviously we'd like to test it ourselves.
We can buy a USA sim card (theres an employee over there this week, or we can buy online) and put it in a phone here, but we only want a pre-pay sim (it's going to be tested then put live), theres no need for a year long rolling contract (which we probably couldn't get anyway, not having a US address).

JOLT seems to be a common pre-pay SIM, but they don't work in the UK.
T-Mobile is another common pre-pay, but you need to activate 'World Class' - and you can't do that on a pre-pay SIM.

Can anyone help / suggest any ideas, please?

Thanks,
Vicster

So basically you just want a SIM with a US number to ensure that the test message arrives ok?

Doesn't look like any of the main carriers (AT&T, Verizon, etc.) allow international roaming on prepay, seems even roaming between states is restricted.

I'm sure you've probably though of this but could you not test while your employee is over there so they can just pick up any prepay and not have to worry about it working over here? If you're going to be messaging US customers do you not have any other business contacts over there you could test it out with?

I know it's prudent to test to ensure everything is as expected, but if you don't manage to find a solution is it reasonable to have faith in the company providing the service? Would you know by customer response that the messages are getting through?

Oooh, lovely reply, AC, cheers. :)

Thats basically it, yeah. We hadn't thought of testing it while the employee is over there - but he comes back tomorrow, and the person who needs to upload the stuff is off till monday - so we're a bit stuffed with that one. Wish we'd thought of that earlier!!

If the worse comes to the worse, you're right, if it works with UK numbers it should work with US ones, and goodness knows the customers would yell if it wasn't - its just basically a case of wanting to check and double / triple check.

I'm not sure if we have any other business contacts - the guy who is back on Monday will have the answer to that one...
