Johnny Marr all the way!!
Something like the intro to "This Charming Man". I can't think of anyone even trying that kind of stuff these days.
It's why I think Noel Gallagher has written some good songs but there's barely a memorable riff in his entire catalogue. Just chord sequences. For someone so enamoured with the Beatles he can't even rip-off Day Tripper.
Johnny Greenwood solo at 2.40
Always a fan of his work on Maquiladora in the Astoria 94 Live show. Some great guitar work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUqLhCZmHp0 (about 2.40 in again, weirdly).
Dunno about guitar heroes though. Can I just put up Sleater-Kinney for all aspects of guitar and drums? :D

Jimi Hendrix for me closely followed by Jimmy Page.
Favourite guitar performance ever for me is Rock Me Baby by Hendrix at Monterey Pop. Favourite Jimmy Page work is In My Time Of Dying.
Its gotta be another vote for Slash. What a legend.
Richard Thompson, Ry Cooder and Marc Ribot for me. All have unique sounds that I just love.
Cannot think of who I would call a Guitar Hero, however Eric Sardinas would be up there with his Blues Bottle Sliding!

The keyboard player in his band is Pete Winfield, whose one-hit wonder "18 With a Bullet" was featured on the Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" soundtrack and he also produced Come On Eileen and 500 Miles by The Proclaimers, fact fans. :)
Kirk Hammett and Billy Corgan, it's the phrasing during the solos that does it.

Another vote for Page here. That concert in Madison Square Gardens in '73 he was simply untouchable on guitar at that point. A simply incredible sound that he gets and he doesn't play a bum note. Terry Kath.
Hendrix once told Chicago's saxophonist Walter Parazaider "Your guitar player is better than me." The two guitarists knew each other, and when Hendrix took Chicago on tour, he reportedly jammed with Kath on stage.
A long-time Chicago fan has reported that at one Hendrix concert, Jimi made a reference to Kath out of the blue, saying something to the effect, "You gotta check out this guy Terry Kath. His band is CTA. He's the best guitar player in the universe."

Steve Vai can't write songs that you like, fact. I'm not a muso. I don't play guitar. Never have.
ALS is not his greatest work, and most of the stuff he has released over the last 5 years has been rubbish in my opinion. But I accept that it is my opinion and certainly would not put it forward as a "fact".
Anyway, I was hoping this thread wouldn't descend into slagging off other people's heroes. Guess I was wrong.

You know, when I said the word "fact" it was a figure of speech - an intensifier. I wasn't stating, in empirical, scientific terms with formulae and equations and such, that Steve Vai can't write songs. Get a grip :p
Although he can't write songs and he's a egomaniacal plonker one step away from being as bad as Malmsteen and I read a short story of his once about a man who had his balls cut off and stuck in his eye sockets and he looks silly in Crossroads. So there.
As far as technical ability goes, I think there has to be a healthy balance between being a musician and being an artist. For instance, Captain Beefheart is not a musician, but he is an artist. Steve Vai is merely a musician. For me, being an artist with a vision always wins out over any kind of technical ability. If you get excited over what the guy is doing with his fingers, and how he's doing it, rather than the emotional effect being produced, then you must be a mentalist.
