First synth is a Korg MS-20, next to that is a ribbon controller (which looks home built rather than some mainstream brand) that Mariqueen plays briefly.

some more replies from Trent on Facebook

Melissa Chambers McClellan: This question is for Mariqueen, Atticus and Trent, any or all to answer. I read that there would indeed be a physical release for "How To Destroy Angels," but I'm curious as to if there will be any type of Deluxe Packaging, perhaps even along the lines of NIN's "Ghosts?" I for one know that I would love to have such a thing, as I'm sure that many already-made-fans would also be interested.
Thanks,
Luke

TR: No Deluxe packaging for the EP, but certainly for the full length record next year.

Brian Hughes: How do you feel about diddyblog.com? After seeing that 25% of my IRA had evaporated overnight seeing this pretty much sealed it as a ****** day.

TR: I haven't actually experienced the "Diddy blog" but just putting those two words together leads me to think I'm not missing much.

Doug Mroz: Are you and Rob Sheridan still working together?

TR: Yes of course. He's art directing HTDA as well as working on a few other items with me at the moment.

Paul Scott: Will multi-track audio be made available for fans to remix, like with NIN?

TR: You know, I haven't really thought about that. Yes probably. I'd like to build out the HTDA site a bit to accommodate it directly rather than piggyback it into NIN.com, but (thinking as I'm writing) **** it maybe I'll put the multitracks up there in the meantime. Thanks for bringing that up.

Zep Ilyas Hey Trent, are you still planning on doing a live action adaptation of Year Zero or are you planning a sequel to Year Zero?

TR: I'm still getting used to the incredibly slow pace that television works, but for now just let me say YZ is very much alive. Can't say any more yet. The fate of the musical sequel / conclusion / coda to YZ is somewhat dependent on how things play out with the series as well as the how the tone of the new material I have earmarked for NIN develops.
Did that make any sense?

Mollie Echeverria: I dig the Cranes-y juxtaposition of female vocals and noisy music. Can we expect a dream pop/shoegaze/ethereal sound for the EP?
Alternately, since I noticed Gang of Four and Cabaret Voltaire listed as influences on your Myspace page, will there be a current of funkiness?
Finally, there's a piece called "A Drowning" in Tuxedomoon's Ghost Sonata; was this in any way an influence (or just coincidental)?

TR: A Drowning is fairly unlike the rest of the EP. The rest of it gets noisier.
Early to mid-period Cabaret Voltaire is a big influence, as is GO4, as is P.i.L. and the like. I'm aware of Tuxedomoon but never listened to them.

Gotta laugh at the new video - being married has obviously made Trent a happy bunny with such cheerful imagery!!! Must rank as one of the least likely to be shown on TV? I like the new music, but do think an album of tunes that sound like that would be a bit too samey.

Some tips for anyone trying to burn a DVD-Audio from the 24 bit wavs.

Lplex complains about the wavs being non-canonical. Unfortunately converting to FLAC doesn't help because you can't author a DVD-V with 24 bit 44kHz audio. I assume the FLAC download will have the same problem.

Since I wanted a DVD-A anyway I found the following works fine with the .wavs:

http://cirlinca.com/products.htm

There is a free DVD-Audio authoring packaging on SourceForge but I couldn't get that to work at all. I suspect that's a Win 7 and / or 64-bit issue though.

Trent answered more questions on Facebook two days ago.

Karlzt Michael: why are the drums in "Fur-Lined" recycled from "Only?"
TR: They aren't. I think I used the same "vintage" drum machine (SC Drumtraks - I think) so the sounds could be similar / the same.

Marcus Proctor: What was the ratio of people initially downloading the EP that actually paid you a few bucks, compared to the fans who downloaded the free verson? Just wondering due to the poor performance of the Niggy Tardust release.
TR: Not sure yet, but we were really just trying to cover bandwidth expense with the 2$. Over 100K downloads on the first day - better than we expected.

Marcus Proctor: Secondly, did the Limited Edition sell out so quickly because there was no limit to the ammount you could buy, meaning someone (scalper) has relisted 10, 15, 100, etc shirts on Ebay?
TR: We didn't really think that through, but I'll check and see if something was put in place to prevent that. I don't THINK that happened and will make sure we have something in place for the next limited event.

Marcus Proctor: Thanks for the EP guys, sounds great, alot of my favorite TR and Atticus studio style matched perfectly with Mariqueens haunting, yet incredible vox.
TR: Thanks - we had fun doing this.

James 'Churchy' Churchill A question for all of you: What is your favourite track on the EP and which one was the most enjoyable to create?
TR: I think most of us enjoyed working on The Believers from start to finish and that was a band fave for a while. Fur-Lined was difficult to get to the right place and we almost left it off the EP. Glad now we included it.

Timothy Sharp: I'm shore you have been ask already but I'll throw it out there When can we expect tour dates? Will you be doing the states first or last? Much less will you be touring world wide or just the states or is it both?
TR: I am currently finishing an unrelated project, then we're going to finish a full-length record over the course of this year. We are discussing touring and would like to on a limited basis but this will not happen until the full-length comes out.

lookoverthere12346: How did you make those atari-like synth sounds in The Believers?
TR: That was actually the iPhone app “Bebot” played by Mariqueen and then fed into a tape echo to add bends and warble.

I hope that unrelated project is the deluxe edition of The Fragile that is suppose to come out this year.

TonyG

Aaaaaand the man just can't keep still.

I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN. Well, that plan didn't work out so well. David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, The Social Network. Yeah, the movie about the founding of Facebook. I've always loved David's work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned. Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

Months later, I'm happy to tell you we're nearing the completion of this and I couldn't be happier with how it's turned out. The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.

As Atticus and I near the end of the scoring process, we're looking forward to the next phase - distilling the large amount of music we've written for this down to a satisfying record (or two). The film opens Oct 1 in the US with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.

Speaking of the film... it's really ******* good. And dark!

Thought the soundtrack to the film was just fantastic. I know it quite well, so watching the film and recognising it was quite unique.

Anyone interesting in buying a BD of the tpur from a couple of years ago - you can buy here - justa few quid inc delivery. I dont have a way of burning a Bluray so only way I can get it in all its glory. http://thisoneisonus.org/node/71

Pretty Hate Machine re-issue (http://www.nin.com/?id=99305)

And you ain't wrong!
I’m happy to finally announce the re-issue of the first Nine Inch Nails record “Pretty Hate Machine,” releasing worldwide 11/22. UMe and Bicycle Music Group managed to locate the original mixes, so I went in the studio with Tom Baker and remastered it for a grealy improved sonic experience. In addition, Rob reinterpreted Gary Talpas’ original cover to make for a fresh new package.

It’s been an interesting trip watching the fate of this record float from one set of hands to another (a long and depressing story) but it’s finally wound up in friendly territory, allowing us to polish it up a bit and present it to you now. We had fun revisiting this old friend, hope you enjoy.

Essential is the word mate! About time too.

There's about 16 million different demo versions of PHM. I'm not sure I'm that bothered about buying a remaster.

23-10-2010, 12:08
That looks like an essential purchase to me. Still one of my favourite albums and I can listen to it today and enjoy. Being remixed from the masters should hopefully give us a much richer sounding album.

Can't wait for this, and the Fragile 5.1

23-10-2010, 13:16
The Fragile is a much more interesting proposition, but I'm not sure how much more interesting PHM can become. The early demos are actually much more interesting than the final mixes, esepcially when they were (even) more poppy (Prince samples being higher in the mix, etc). It's a shame the deluxe version of PHM never came out, as I'd buy that in a heartbeat if it had all the demo versions in decent quality.

LeftHandedGuitarist
23-10-2010, 13:29
Honestly I'm not too bothered about PHM, it's an album that's never clicked with me, but the thought of a deluxe Fragile is very exciting - easily my favourite NIN album.

You know, when I heard about the final tour of NiN, Trent getting married and taking a step back from music, I thought we'd have years to wait before we'd get anything more from him not something new every other week.

Just listened to some of the remastered PHM on we7.com... can't really hear any difference. What has changed?

anephric
23-11-2010, 19:42
It's completely remixed/retinkered. Listen to Terrible Lie - you can hear a tonne of things in the mix that you couldn't really hear before, or hear that well. Not a revelation like the remastered Downward Spiral (which had new things inserted in some mixes, a bit cheekily) but worth the upgrade definitely.

It IS a shame that Reznor didn't release all the offcuts from PHM, as I said before. I mean, after all this time and the amount of people who've already got them, is it that embarrassing to include decent versions of Purest Feeling and Maybe Just Once? Or Twist etc? Anyway, I wouldn't spend a fortune on it and I can see why people don't like the push in volume (hey, like manowar I like it loud) but it does let you hear things that were low in the mix that you couldn't hear before. It's not a definitive replacement, it's another version. It's pretty cool if you think of it like that.
