Some interesting info on the next insallment to the fifa series here:
http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6193217.html

Have to admit, being a PES fanboy since the days the SNES, I was plesantly shocked when I purchased UEFA Euro 2008 and had a few games in "be a pro" mode. Then after dipping my toe in "captain your country" mode, I was hooked. Been playing ever since.

With Fifa '09 now in the pipeline I am wondering whether or not "captain your country" will allow you some sort of career mode within the domestic leagues. This would be a massive step forward in football simulation in my eyes. As I said I have had no experience up until now of the fifa series and there may well already be a career mode. If so, sorry.

But to be able to create a player from scratch, maybe start off at a lower league club of your choice and earn enough points to add to your desired stats, perhaps get offers of cotracts at bigger clubs when you obtain enough points and so on.

I hope there will be something along these lines, as much as I enjoy playing euro 2008, though it all just seems a bit short-term.

Looking forwars to this though regardless.

From a former PES fanboy. :)

One thing that bugged me with the be a pro mode is that unless your playing with mates then people would always pause the game for no apparent reason.

Just looking at the fifa 09 site looks like they've finally implemented changing tactics without having to pause the game:clap:

I'm quite looking forward to this.

I played the Euro 2008 demo and enjoyed it however FIFA 2008 still didn't feel quite right. I always found tricks and shooting a little too difficult or not quite right. Hopefully they've polished up that area because it was starting to get good.

Also I've read over the weekend that they will be a career mode for that 'captain' mode. Only four seasons though.

Demo due 11th of September

Looks like they are doing weekly stats updates for players aswell like with the new NBA game. But you have to pay for it...

john316
20-08-2008, 13:05
Pay extra?

EA can get stuffed with that 'feature' - I've paid for my XBL and the game. If they can't offer that service for the cost of the 2 services, then I ain't bothering and I doubt many others will bother either.

MarcusUK
20-08-2008, 13:16
No I can see that 'feature' being a flop. It's a nice idea from what I read about the NBA stuff. But they can kiss my arse if they think I'm gonna pay for it.

Squad updates = good
Chargeable stat updates = bad

Hopefully it will flop or EA will change their mind.

Apep
20-08-2008, 13:48
Live Season will be a paid-for service, but a free trial restricted to one of the leagues will be offered and run from activation through to the end of the season.

A free trial for one of the leagues wouldn't be bad would it? As long as you can choose which league! Then you just choose the Premiership and you've got free updates for the whole season, and then the new game will come out a few months later...

MarcusUK
20-08-2008, 14:11
I think there is some confusion at the mo about if this includes roster updates (transfers)

The stats update that I read about for NBA is basically updates to the players attibutes depending on weekly performances. If suddenly their left foot gets better then that will be reflected. Shooting from certain places, even changes in position.

john316
20-08-2008, 14:45
If it was Team Updates as well in that extra charge, I'd cancel my 360 preorder and get the PS3 version instead so I could handle the updates myself.

MarcusUK
20-08-2008, 15:19
I assume the player stats and roster updates will be seperate. Stats being weekly and rosters once in a while?

Least I hope so...

Yeah, 10 vs 10 online football has always been a gaming milestone for me. I'm sure it'll be chaos to begin with though, with it being more like school playground football with 20 players chasing the ball around the park.

Not sure about other platforms but, IIRC, on the Wii the general consensus was that Pro Evo beat FIFA (08) hands down.

Well it plays brilliantly this. The one touch stuff is a lot more responsive and first time shots, volleys etc are far easier to pull off.

The CPU AI is pretty damn good too on the higher levels.

Typical exaggeration IMO, yes Pro Evo 2008 was a let down compared to past games and FIFA 08 was a big improvement on the horrendous past FIFA games (mostly by just being more like PES..). But PES08 was still the superior game.. outside of online play of course :)

I've got hope that FIFA 2009 will actually be the game some people hype FIFA 08 up as being, a FIFA game that finally loses the last of those terribly awkward animations and poor AI. Oh and hopefully the PC version isn't a PS2 port this time!

Da Outsider
11-09-2008, 12:28

It forces you back to the one-on-one training pitch thing and 'Restart Match' is greyed out in in the pause menu. Only takes about 15 seconds to start a new match though.

What are the keepers like chaps? I thought the only thing about Euro 2008 was the first touch (which I think has been tightened up) and how good the keepers were. I've got better at beating them now but they still stop some shots I reckon they've got no right too.

TimJBart

You can get past people by knocking it past them but its often easier to pass your way around and try to drag people out of position. I found in Euro 2008 as soon as I started slowing myself down and adopting a slower tempo I got more success. When I rushed it I found play becoming scrappy.

Teasy
11-09-2008, 13:37
Just played a few games, still feels sluggish and clumsy and the animation still isn't good enough. Improvement on 2008 but still not worth my time from my initial play, I'll try playing another 10 matches or so before I decide on it finally though.

I loved 08 and will definitely be getting this for the online side, but I take it this will have those impossible challenges! Can only echo the comments. I reckon they've pretty much nailed this one. The physical side of the game really adds something. I love some of the crunching tackles you can pull off and shooting appears to have been tweaked. Keepers are still tough to beat (only scored one from open play and that was against Toronto) but they don't feel as unfair as the last one. Finding space is difficult however and you've got to work for it.

Pro Evo is going to have to do something special because credit to EA, they've turned out something that looks pretty complete. Hopefully the on-line side is as solid and well implemented.

Its not so much how well it plays out on the pitch (as you point out that bit will be excellent) but its the little things like players hosting games and never starting etc etc. As long as they don't drop the ball on those things (no reason to think they will) everything is hunky dory.

Last time round it was like a behind and above viewpoint, which let you see a lot of the pitch, with like on-screen arrows letting you know where the ball was, if it disappeared from view.

Really impressed with the demo - loved the improved heading and the need to time the jump for your headers. A shame they haven't made the substitute part a little more seamless so it branches better into the game rather than a cut away and then the substitute animations load in. And I'm still not happy at the large names on the back of the shirts - why does Kaka have to have a font size 150 for his name?

The promise of 'real time stats updates' where players real life form is incorporated into the game from week to week, sounds like an excellent idea, but one that is surely going to be next to impossible to administer?

I'm firmly in the FIFA09 camp now after playing this demo. As I mentioned before I've been a pro Pro Evo man for years before last years effort but FIFA has improved massivly since the dark old days.

This plays really well, it feels like a game of football. It is more responsive than last year, the heading is better, so are player animations, and it has the whole football feel and atmosphere that Pro Evo can't/doesn't get anywhere near.

Also, I love the way player point to where they want the ball, and they seem to make runs that are miles more intelligent than I've seen before.

All in all very impressed with this demo. I wonder what PES will do this year...

It will not be too difficult to administer. For a start its a paid for service (first season free I think) and limited to selected top divisions. Also the amount of information collected on the top flight is amazing. Having worked at a football club in the past there are loads of services like pro-zone etc which track player runs, form etc etc for all the top leagues. No doubt EA has agreed a deal with one of these services to use the information they collect.

I played the demo last night and I have to say I'm really impressed. 08 was good and I played it a lot but this is fantastic.

One thing I'm glad they fixed is the speed that the keepers get the ball back out into play. It used to always annoy me that by the time the keeper had kicked or thrown the ball al lof the opposition players were back in play and it really slowed the game down.

Been stuck into the demo now for at least two hours. Cant beleive how polished this game is, everything on screen is so crisp and all menus and sub menus easy to navigate/use. The gameplay itself is incredible, tackling has been improved (slide tackles and jostling looks more realistic than ever) even the linesmen's movement and animations look realistic. Love the way forwards make little runs and point where they want the ball played. A bit gutted that the demo only allows 2 mins per half, can see myself playing this to death until the game is released.

Having to now properly time your jumps to win headers adds to the realism, the gameplay is slick and smooth for the most part, goalkeepers look and act really well.

Couple of minor negative points, the be a pro seasons mode is limited to four seasons? Would have been better had it ran a bit longer in my opinion.

Also found that penalties were a little hard to control, both taking and using the goalkeeper (didn't realise that goalkeepers could be moved along the line in this during a penalty).

I'm really looking forward to this now, can't wait to get stuck into the be a pro mode. This years Pro evo is going to have to be some improvement on last years to come anywhere close to the class of FIFA '09.

How do you place shots, them curled type ones you can do on pro evo?

New to this whole fifa thing not played it in years, can it be done?

Playing on ps3 by the way :)

Bearing in mind the standard controls can be changed, and I have changed them, I have found that holding L2 while shooting gives me placed shots, more controlled shots. Not sure about adding curl though sorry.

Having just tried again I think adding curl depends on the player your in control of, when controlling Ronaldinho on the one on one screen, I took a shot from 30 yards and the what looked like a well wide attemp actually bent and hit the post. So as I said I presume it differs from player to player.

FIFA 09 wasn't even on my radar but then I read this:

- Be A Pro: Seasons - Pick or create a professional player and test your football ability over a four season campaign. Master a single position and develop your skills -- passing, shooting, positioning, marking -- to ultimately become a national legend.

Going against the grain here, but I played the FIFA demo and thought it was garbage. I can't really see what's the big deal about it: it's the same as 2008 and 2007 and the UEFA and European games before it.

But that's just my opinion.

I spent a bit of time with it yesterday, and while it does have a LOT of nice touches (practice before kick off / controls / replays etc), and it's better than the FIFA I remember from a few years ago, it still plays like a fat woman wading through gravy.

I played some PES2008 on the PS2 after work on Friday, and even that p.o.s. was more responsive and played a better game of football than this. FIFA's catching up, but I still think PES plays better...

Lobbing Cech from 35 yards is well funny.. I even had him come out of the area chasing a rebound off the bar and when he got to the ball he kept on running with it Forrest Gump style..!! wtf?

I kind of enjoyed the demo, but it still suffers from the 'treacle pitch' feel that the previous incarnations have - though it is less prevalent before.

I think it suffered for me compared to the NHL '09 demo, which has the fast zippy feel that I like in a team sports game.

I will still pick it up if I can find it for a good price, particularly if the 10 vs 10 mode works well.

It tok me a while to properly get into this as my housemate and I were both rubbish which meant that every game ended 0-0. Now that we have mastered the contrls and the way it plays, we never fail to score, and a lot of the goals are crackers!

It is definitely the best playig FIFA so far I think.

I wounder what sort of stats system this or PES 2009 will have!?. Im still waiting for a footie game that keeps records of all players as from when you first create a save profile, for instance, how many:

Goals
Assists
Shots off target
Fouls
Red Cards
Yellow Cards
yards Ran
minutes on the pitch

etc, etc.....a player has acheived, would be good to see who has scored the most goals in the entire game (CPU & Player controlled) after say 5 months or so of having created a save profile, i think some of the stats would be quiet interesting. But i havent heard any word if this sort of thing shall be implimented!

There was a thread on Gamefaqs recently where the majority of people posting said that the FIFA 09 demo plays a lot better when the gameplay speed was set to slow. Some were even requesting it becomes the default setting.

Edit: I didn't have any problems with the speed of the demo but if I do get FIFA 09 I know I'll have to find the right balance between assisted and manual controls because sometimes it didn't feel like I was in control of what was going on in the demo, especially with passes.

the_daddy
20-09-2008, 14:42
With Euro 2008 when playing "be a pro" mode I always made sure all the assisted passing/shooting controls were set to manual, made it feel a bit more authentic, saying that though I missed hundreds of sitters and lost count of the times passes/shots/crosses went astray.

It isn't possible on the PS3 version, or so I've read.

It would be nice to be able to switch position as and when needed. If your manager is short of forwards and your a midfielder it seems obvious to press you into service as a striker. However I would be really surprised if that was the case, for this version at least.

Its going to be interesting to see how the 10v10 works. I know EA will nail the on the pitch stuff in regards to on-line play but I'm interested as to their direction for the setup of teams, selections etc. I think that will be make or break for it really.

I think I've managed to get the rash / poorly timed / purposely bad timed tackles out of my system with the demo.

Must admit the referee is right on the mark for booking players after a move is over. I remember I slid in on two players and there was a good period of play before the ended. I expected only the second player to be booked but instead he did both of them with a yellow card.

I hope it tracks your stats for 10v10 games in terms of minutes on the pitch, passes completed etc along with bookings. The statto in me thinks that might be a good feature after a few months. :dork:

In NHL your offline position does not reflect where you play online.

It would be difficult to do this as the chances are offline everyone will play up front. So when you went online you'd have a team of 10 strikers.

When we organize official games we should decided positions on the thread before we play otherwise everyone will just jump on the front 2 or 3 positions.

JohnMac
29-09-2008, 14:46
I hope there is some flexibility in 'Be A Pro' both offline and online. It could get boring being a defender - everyone wants to go for glory and score sometimes but this wouldn't exactly be seen as being a team player unless everyone was up for a corner or free kick. So if you were stuck in the same position like that in an online team I can see those players not sticking with the game for long.

luffk
29-09-2008, 14:54
I don't mind playing in one position to be honest. I would like move around the park so to speak but I'm happy to stick - particularly if I get reasonably good at one position. Some of us will just be happy to play in a setting which isn't dominated by tail ends (as seems to be the case with a lot of live games).

I guess if we play regularly as one team or squad we'll start to know what areas we are good at. For example I can score goals but I know sometimes I need a couple of chances to get my eye in. Others don't so its to the benefit of the team that I perhaps let someone else take on that role.

I honestly think this will be less of a problem if you play as a regular group unlike the free for all that regular live games seem to degenerate into.

The Manager can suggest positions (I assume this means tell them but they don't have to) play, and every "Pro" online has equal stats so you can play any position. You can also have it to stay fixed to one player all the time, or switch between any non-locked players IIRC.

Only played for about 15 mins last night.

Top line first impressions are that it's changed quite a bit from the demo - the AI seems a lot better at closing down your options so you've got to be clever about how you pull them around. On the flip side, defending is easier with tackling being a lot better.

Aftertouch plays a big part too, you can really whip crosses and free kicks now.

Keepers seem to have been taken down a notch, if you get one-on-one then blast it from around the spot and you'll score nine times out of ten...

Obviously couldn't try the new online bits on the 360 last night and the PS3 version I got didn't come with the code you need to download the cool stuff.

I'll get on tonight and post again tomorrow a bit more in depth.

Been playing a lot of local co-op at lunch.

Awesome fun.

As a pro-evo man up until euro 2008 really I think one of the reasons that I like Fifa 09 so much is that if someone gave it to you a year ago and said "this it pro evo 2008" then you would have believed them.

The shooting is a lot better. I've always preferred Pro Evo's shots, they feel a lot more direct for some reason and that was one thing that really held me back from loving Euro 2008. It's still not perfect but is a lot better than Fifa 08.

Its not on general sale anywhere that I have heard of.

Luckily I managed to pick up my copy (dont ask me where).

Game gave up a few nice easy gamerpoints (most welcome after the slogfest that was Star Wars Force Unleashed)

Played a few games offline and seems like I might actually be playing this after the launch week (by which time I have usually switched to Pro Evo).

Praying that this years Pro Evo will do itself justice though, as I think the 2 games will be sufficiently differently paced, that they will compliment each other quite nicely.

is this already on sale somewhere or something? a few on my friends list seem to be playing already, and no pirates have this at the moment.

yes they do, it came out last night...possibly where UKBoy got his from

Ian Vinten - is the game still as fast as the demo? I really felt the game played too quickly.

Yes, apparently it can be done in the 360 demo but not the PS3 demo (should be in the full game though).

Someone on here lied about that then, can't say personally as I've only downloaded the PS3 demo. Thought it would be odd to have that feature in one demo and not the other. Fanboys!

That was me. The option is there in the demo on the 360 version you need to scroll down a bit, it doesn't appear until you do.

In which menu? I really want to try this at a more realistic pace.

It isn't possible on the PS3 version, or so I've read.

Edit: OK just checked the 360 demo and you go into Game Settings, press the RT to go to Advanced. Scroll down under the Match tab and Game Speed should be the bottom option.

Right trigger to go advanced! Of course! Why didn't I think of that! :brickwall:

Wont have a chance to play the demo again before the game is actually out unfortunately. But hopefully it will remember the setting in the full version.

having spent a few hours on this, i am not sure i like te be a pro mode in this game. I am playing CM, and barely get a chance for a shot on goal. It also seems to have a crap way of tracking your performance. It all seems to be a percentage based thing (is it built by yanks?). It seems that you are better off not doing stuff, than trying and failing.

i had one go online, that seemed to play well, even though i lost 2:0 (nothing new there though )

i even lost to Derby, and am sitting near the bottom of the league as Forest, christ this game is realistic :D

and red cards are quite frequent :(

It was the same in Euro 2008...you could miss 1 tackle and your match rating would plummet dramatically.

Overall, I still like the way it worked though...plus in this version, you can get added points for completing match objectives. Looking forward to starting it :)

i did like the game though, but i need to practice!

match objective...yeeah, i had one that said achieve 2 shots in one game..i didnt quite manage that...so in the next match it made it 4 shots! cheers i thought.

it is good though, i quite liked the pace, seemed pretty good.

How does Be A Pro work? Do you have to stay in the right part of the field, mark people, win tackles, successfully pass to other players, shoot on target, score etc? Can you switch positions or are you stuck with the one you first pick?

Previous football games haven't kept my interest for long but I intend to give FIFA 09 a decent shot. I suppose the good thing about FIFA 09 even before I play it is that if Be A Pro isn't right for me I can play normal team play or manage a club instead.

you have to be in the right part to score position points...but you can go whereever you please. You get + stats for making successful tackles, jostles, shots, defending well, etc. You also get negative points for doing stuff badly. This is where it can be annoying. For example... i left my self out of CM when we were losing so i could hopefully help score..but you get penalised for being out of position.

Now, that should not be negative, but the system isnt that flexible..i dont know how it could cator for situations like this to be fair though.

dribbling seems quite hard though, which is good, as you cannot just steam up the pitch past everyone, well, not as the player i was anyhow.

i am not sure if you can change your pros position, ive not looked yet.

How does the "be a pro" mode begin? Are you in the reserves of your chosen club? Or do you get to play in the first team straight away ? Also, only having played euro 2008 and not any of the recent Fifa's, does be the pro mode's four seasons include things like cup games, internationals and friendlies ??

I used to be able to rely on Gameplay to have a good game delivered before release, but both Pure and now FIFA 09 haven't turned up on Thursday. I'll see how they do wih the next few games I have on pre-order (Far Cry 2, LittleBigPenis and Fable 2) but I might have to consider leaving them on the bench after the next few games.

Absolutely loving this edition of Fifa. I've always loved the presentation and 'official' feel of the series but have always conceded that Pro Evo plays more responsively.

Until now.

FIFA finally plays as good as it looks.

Can you actually control shots with this though?

As in pro evo you can choose to shape a side footed curled shot or just blast it.

Playing the demo it was down to the computer to decide which type to take on, personally that removes a lot from the game for me. It doesn't feel like i am controlling, unless you can and i just dont know the controls

According to the manual, the only shooting options are...

B = Shot
B + RB = Finesse/Placed Shot
B + LB = Chip Shot

Seems you can only put spin on the ball when taking free-kicks.

Set the shot controll to semi or manual.

Use RB to hit a side foot. use LT to hit a controlled blast. shoot on its own is more powerfull.

the player will use the outside of his boot depended on what footed he is based on where you are shooting from.

Aftertouch plays a big part too, you can really whip crosses and free kicks now.

You can bend shots in the demo too.
