Before I start looking around for repair quotes or replacement costs, I was wondering if anyone has any experiences of problems with the above.

I've been using my S1 to chart the progess of the building work we are having done at home and when I came to take the latest set of shots last week the LCD/Viewfinder remain Black. The Canon logo appears during the boot sequence and the focus square and icons are displayed during use. However I am unable to take any shots or see anything other than a black screen. The camera will beep to indicate that the subject is in focus, although exactly what it is focused on I have no idea. Taking a shot results in a black photo, as you would expect.

It's almost as though the lens cap has been left on, but it hasn't :suspect:

Does anyone have any ideas :help:

TIA

This seems to be a known fault with certain canon cameras

Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory (Updated 10/31/2006)

Oh and the good news seems to be that...

"Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair."

That article relates to canon USA only but theres a good chance the UK branch will do the same.

I have just spoken to Canon and they have confirmed that, if the fault with the camera is determined to be the CCD then it will be repaired free of charge regardless of warranty status.

Thanks again chiefster69 for the great information. :notworthy

A similar problem appeared with our S1 earlier in the year and after similar finding we decided to send it off and then two weeks later a brand new sealed S5 got delivered

Reading over at dpreview.com (which was where I found out about the issue) quite a few people have had replacement cameras so you could get a new S5

Only problem was that none of the accessories (cf card, remote, lens adapter etc) for the S1 fit the S5 so had to buy a few new bits

Glad I could be of help. Be sure and keep us all informed on the progress, I shall have the warm feeling of altruism all day if you end up with a brand new S5, should save a bit on my heating bill ;)

Then turn off your heating 'coz I have just heard from the Canon repair centre. They are unable to fix my S1 and so have offered me an S5 as a replacement

Thanks again.
