View Full Version : Making sure I don't use data tariff in Europe
Off to Spain next week
I heard these horror stories of people being hit with high bills because their PDA has downloaded their e-mail
I've got a TyTn II - will I be safe if I just turn off 'Data Connection'? (but leave WLAN on just in case I pass an open connection which will download emails for free/surf internet?)
I'm a bit worrid about this when I got to the US with my iPhone! :(
Psycho
why not disable everything and then turn it on when needed, you'll save battery power that way too

but once it downloads all my work e-mails, surely it won't matter whether it's done in one go or over 7 days?
won't the cost be the same as it's the amount of data downloaded?
If you've got a Windows Mobile there's a piece of software on Modaco called NoData which is excellent. It lists all your data connections and allows you to enable or disable them individually.
Edit
It's here (http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/)
There's also a random screenshot of it here (http://www.htcdriver.com/wm6-freeware/images/nodata.png)

I meant only leave gsm enabled, and everything else off but after testing it still turns on gprs even though I've told it not to.
Annoying, you'd think you'd get the option, I thought it was also disabled with the tweaking programs but it doesn't seem to either.
Actually, as I type I've found a solution it stops all internet bound traffic over the data connection :
Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advanced -> Select Networks and change the Internet connection to a setting that doesn't have any details (e.g. "My ISP") or create a new connection and just select that.
This stops it from connection to the internet by data, wireless still works if you enable it :)

I found when I was in Italy with my e650 that it knew I wasn't on my home network and it didn't download my emails. When I requested it to it give me a warning to say this was very expensive.
So based on that you may be ok.
Cheers
Steve

Simple on the iPhone, just switch off Data Roaming in Settings --> General --> Network.

Can I include a standard disclaimer with that, just in case ;)
I did test it, set it to my isp, then tried downloading weather, which would usually trigger a data connection and it couldn't.

I use nodata as well. nice and simple
What an unfortunate typo. Of course I meant NoData not NoDate.
Windows Mobile disables activesync when roaming by default - you have to either sync manually each time, or change the setting to allow it to connect by itself.
So really, you just need to check for any other apps that may use data in the background and avoid launching stuff like IE.

I dont trust windows mobile phones, so I take my beer nokia phone with me, if I am ever out the uk..
lad at work got a canny bill, disabled activesync but his rss software kept working for 5 days...
activesync doesn't have anything to do with data that other programs might use
My solution is the best if something tries to make a data connection it can't the phone hasn't got a connection available to make as the settings don't exist.
I still don't know why they don't have this option to start with, you can turn off data connections but it'll start them up again if a program requests it.

thats what I mean, he forgot about the rss software.
With NoData it won't restart the connection. It flags it in the registry as disabled and if any programs tries to connect they can't and it comes back with no connection settings.
