View Full Version : Embarrassingly bad celebrity cameos

Just reached the end of a six month voyage in which I saw all seven seasons of The West Wing for the first time
But Jesus, that episode where a mumbling Jon Bon Jovi is continually popping up trying to discuss 'policy' with Jimmy Smits was excruciatingly bad to the point where I wanted to heave.
So what other TV shows have had episodes ruined by pointless celebrity cameos? And apart from Extras, have any actually worked?

I seem to remember the Ally McBeal where they got Barry White to actually appear at the club in person to be quite cringeworthy but yet good at the same time.
And any film/tv that shoehorns Ricky Gervais in such as The Simpsons or Night At The Museum is a disaster (apart from his actual shows that he's supposed to be in like The Office and Extras).

Brad Pitt was pretty crap when he popped up in Friends.

jon bon jovi was pretty crap in ally mcbeale as well - he wasn't playing himself though.
Barry white was okay - he mostly just sung when he was on.

Agree with Kenny, Ricky Gervais popping up in almost anything is usually awful. God that Simpsons episode was dire.
I didn't like it when Bruce Willis popped up in Friends (but he wasnt as bad as Brad Pitt, granted). How come no-one recognised him from Die Hard, given its the only film we ever see Joey, Chandler and Ross watching on more than one occasion?

William Shatner keeps popping up in Boston Legal and is incredibly embarassing every time...
I quite liked Brad Pitt in Friends - thought he was funny. Only downside was shoe-horning him in as he was with Jennifer Aniston at the time.
Bruce Willis was class in Friends too!

I thought Shatner was a regular cast member on Boston Legal (rather than a cameo) ... and that his character is meant to be like that :?:

Because it'd be as bad as the plot device using in Ocean's 12? :D

agree with you there. i thought that episode was quite amusing...and it's probably the only time i've ever fancied him.

I think he was kidding. Either way he's wrong, 'coz Shatner's a comedy god in that show.

I thought Brucewas very funny in Friends - "Im just a love machine,ya baby!!"
Fair do's to Friends, its celebrity cameo's were usually very, very good. Isabella Rossilini springs to mind. "He's going to hit on Isabella Rosilini, I'm just sorry we don't got popcorn".

Regarding Friends, I thought that both Sean Penn & Alec Baldwin were wasted as irritating characters - two superb actors who should've been given much more to work with.

Nothing can be worse than this cameo...

Nothing tops Richard Branson in Friends, though, that was terrible.

Shatner is one of the main stars of Boston Legal and cockbongo must be insane to say he's an embarassment in it! It's one of the best comedy performances on TV! :cuckoo::cuckoo::notworthy:notworthy

Do we already have a winner so soon? My god, that's terrible - a human-made disaster of Chernobyl-esque proportions.

I know, I was kind of half kidding. My point is that it's impossible to see him as any "character" apart from William Shatner. It's not Denny Crane, it's always William Shatner. Every time. Which means that it's basically a cameo in every single episode and yes - he's very funny - but he's still a fat Captain Kirk in a suit who is sometimes, well, just a little bit embarassing.
I am a bit of fan, btw, but i think my point stands....
Andrew Lloyd Webber was terrible in Hollyoaks. So he fitted right in :p
It was on youtube, but I can't find it anymore. So you'll just have to trust me!
(And no, I don't watch Hollyoaks, have just seen that clip!)

Just saw Britney Spears in the new episode of How I Met Your Mother and oddly enough she was perfectly fine, actually you could almost say good.

Pretty much all the cameos on Friends were great.
Alec Baldwin :notworthy
The only one that I can think of who was pretty terrible was Jean Claude Van Damme. :gag:

I hate it when I go to the theatre and there's a "big TV/film name" in the show/play and the audience all clap like seals when they first appear on stage . I think "hey hang on, let's see if they're actually any good first". I would say that 4 out of 5 actors that made their name on TV or in films are always terrible on stage, because they either can't cope with the inability to stop and redo something they fluffed up, or they just don't know how to project their voice to the whole theatre. Whereas proper stage actors do this effortlessly and undetectably, but when they spend their life on the stage they do not generally get as famous. So yes I hate it when the TV shows put a load of clapping in or encourage the live audience to clap, just because someone is doing a celeb cameo :(
