Hi

My camera seems to be eating my old 1700mAh batteries way too quickly these days, so it's time to replace them.

If I get some 2700 mAh bateries, will my old charger still do the job? It says on the back "Charging Current : AA 1000mA" and the instructions don't seem to say it can only be used with certain batteries, but I thought I'd best ask for some advice.

Thanks a lot!

Darren

They will charge but may take a little longer...

If you are after a decent quick charger... I picked up an Energizer 15 min battery charger a while back - I'd really recommend it. It really is quick!

Also, the 4 batteries it comes with which are 2200mAh (I think!) last ages...

This used to be available from 7DayShop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=18&url=7dayshop.com) for < £20 but I can't find it on there any more :(

It's this one:

I have one of these 7dayshop Battery Charger - V6500 - Ultra Fast Charger (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=18&url=http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=102046) and some of these Ni-Mh Battery - AA Size (2800mAh) (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=18&url=http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=101842). It's fast and the batteries work great.

I've got a couple of fastish charger, but the one I'll typically use is actually a slow charger!

Specifically, one of these http://www.batterylogic.co.uk/technoline/technoline-BL700.asp

Slow charging, assuming you have the time available, is supposedly better for the cells. That charger will allow you to set various charging currents up to a 700mAH max. It'll also allow you to discharge at various currents ( max 350mAH ). The 'test' function will allow you to determine battery capacity. Each battery position is individually configuarable. Expensive, but I've been able to rejuvenate a number of my batteries and I've also been able to match batteries to each other by their capacity.

It really depends whether it charges by duration or by detecting the batteries are full, my guess if it's a plugin type, it uses a timer.

Say for instance its got a timer for 2 hours, then at most it will charge one 2000mAh battery, if you have slots for 4 batteries then it would charge 4 500mAh batteries in that 2 hour period.

I'm guessing the charger normally runs for 8 hrs, meaning it will charge upto 4 2000mAh batteries in that time, the reason you get away with charging lower capacity cells is that the low current means they won't overcharge or damage the cells.

If it does use a timer, it will still work, but you will need to take the batteries out and put them back and force it to go through 2 charging cycles, and to be honest I'd manually switch it off after 4 hrs or so on the second run.
