Well almost: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/football.html?in_article_id=537331&in_page_id=1779&ito=1490

Fewer 'night at Barcelona's anyway!

I may well be wrong but on reading that article it seems that one game may still be live on terrestrial television on the Tuesday night, the first choice game.

After the first round of bidding, BSkyB emerged as the clear winner for a number of rights packages including exclusive coverage of all live matches and highlights on a Tuesday and all matches on a Wednesday - with the exception of the first-choice match.

So it is pretty much the same as it is now except the ITV 4 game involving a Premiership team will be on Sky Sports and the Wednesday games' will remain the same.

Surely (according to past form at least) the EU will need to step in if one broadcaster did win all the rights?

Not saying that's a good thing - but it's what happened with the Premier League.

I'm no expert, but I believe UEFA want one match per round on free telly - Premiere hold all the rights in Germany, but one of the terrestrial broadcasters must broadcast one live match per round.

No doubt there'll be all the usual hullabaloo about the matches not being on FTA telly, but in a market increasingly money driven (the way the rights are spread out now to maximise TV time for example) can anyone really be surprised.

I think that the massive corporate sponsorships (sorry, "partnerships") that UEFA put together around the CL probably requires at least some mass exposure on FTA telly.

I know that the BBC were very, very keen to bid for some CL rights but they needed to convince UEFA that they could still provide the same level of commercial exposure for the sponsors.

It'll just encourage more people into finding alternative methods of watching. What I'd pay in Sky subs I'd much rather spend on beer watching the footie down the pub

If the Beeb don't get the CL, does that mean there will be no live football on the BBC?

Next season yes, but somebody on here said that for the following season that will broadcast about 10 Championship games. I haven't seen this anywhere myself so I have no idea as to the truth of this.

It looks like it is going to be 1 Wednesday game on FTA and the rest on Sky.

That's the way I read it too.

Though when it says from 2009 ex they mean the 08/09 season or the 09/10 season?

Fever Dawg
18-03-2008, 09:01
It will mean 09/10 season I'd imagine as they're unlikely to start changing the broadcasting rights half-way through the 08/09 competition.

All this will probably mean is we get 1 less game on FTA, and either BBC or ITV will win the rights to that first choice game. Very little difference to now.

good points Brilliant news hate itv , one night in barcelona guy is actually decent rest of the pundits and commentators are weak plus there racists.......

Much prefare sky the build up starts much earlier and they have one pundit in who has some knowledge of the non-uk teams.

And its not like we pay any more as we were payg for hte wenesday games anyway.

bad point
Essentialy those of on virgin now get a game less on tuesday a theres no red button to view all games so theres only itv, ss2, ssex showing games

Looks like Sky have also won the rights to show the 3rd qualifying round in August exclusively live.

Hopefully they will now spread the games over 3 or even 4 sports channels now & more games in HD now that HD 3 is on.

Hope they put their subscription charges up, seeing as everyone's so pleased there will be less decent football on free tv! :)

It always sucked that they didnt show highlights of weds games, now there wont be any highlights of tuesdays either and the option of the second tuesday game?

I thought the BBC had some League Cup matches next season? Not much I know but it's something!

Oh and the thread title is wrong as the terrestrial pack of first choice game on Wednesday hasn't been allocated yet :)

If games go to SKY, I simply stop watching it. It's time people stood up and voted with their wallet. We are feeding players' wages. The audience has the power but they never want wield it! Animal Farm comes to mind.

So ITV have got the Champions League rights again, not really surprising since they just lost the F1 rights.

ITV get the first pick Wednesday night matches:

So they get first pick of the Wednesday game instead of the current Tuesday game and they loose the ITV 4 match.

They have paid £55 million to show one live match each week/round and highlights I presume ?

ITV used to get first pick on two of Tuesday's games. They now only get first pick on 1 of Wednesday's games.

Not sure about highlights ... do they still have right for the Tuesday highlights ? or is now Wednesday highlights ? Or both ? :?:

Interesting that that article suggests ITV dumped F1 in order to afford the CL rather than the BBC winning it off ITV.

The BBC article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7307971.stm) doesn't mention there being any Wednesday highlights at all and that the BBC never put a bid in at any stage.

So that would seem to be £55M for 1 CL game a week

It called spin, as that is what ITV said in a press release earlier.

Assuming ITV get highlights on wednesday then I would say overall it is better than what they have now. You can only watch one live game anyway and it is annoying not being able to see highlights of the wednesday games if you can't watch sky. At least with the wednesday highlights they should also be able to show goals from tuesday.

Is it though?

Earlier today it emerged that the broadcaster had ditched live Formula One coverage two years before the contract was due to expire, allowing the BBC to take back the rights after a 12-year gap.

How could they have lost the rights if they still had 2 years left?

It does look that way, assuming there is no highlights package thrown in that is a lot of money for one match even if it is over four years.

How could they have lost the rights if they still had 2 years left? But did they jump or were they pushed, seems we are still a long way from having that answered.

Interesting though, this package had to go to a UK terrestrial broadcaster, the BBC didnt bid at any stage, so was the bidding reopened purely because ITV didnt offer enough to keep UEFA happy or what? Ch4/5 wouldnt have been making a sensible bid would they?

Earlier this week Sky scooped the majority of the TV rights to Champions League football until 2012, after tabling a blockbuster bid estimated at more than £240m.

wow that a hell of a lot of dough from just hte uk broadcaster migaine when the total money uefa make per season on tv rights sold worldwide

The f1 contract had escape clases which could probably be used by either party.

55m tho, presumably more than they paid last time and theyre getting less for it this time?
